Jay & Amber, you'll love their "Black Coffee In Bed", "Another Nail in My Heart", "Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)" and more!!! Saw them in concert BITD! They play instruments, just not in this video! Edit- lead singer in this song Paul Carrack, sang lead on hit songs "How Long" with Ace and "The Living Years" with Mike & The Mechanics!! Chris Difford wrote it about his ruminations on a relationship that is failing, or has failed, due to his own infidelities.
I think Paul Carrack has been in every British band at one time or another. Even though Glenn Tillbrook and Chris Difford were the main songwriters and frontmen, Jools Holland played with them in their early days.
The first singer here, Paul Carrack was also the lead singer in the group "Mike & The Mechanics" Living Years. He is still touring, he has the most beautiful voice. 😍 🎼👌
Paul carrack is very influential and busy in the 80s. He had a solo career as well and a solo song called no more tears. This is a super fun song. Plenty of soul, nice vocals...shared vocals! Instruments are great and it goes down easy but its also got a pretty complex chord progression.
This song is about regret. His girl left him. He embraces the single life but anyone that he is tempted by only reminds him of her. He stays away from the temptation in hopes to get her back but she's moved on.
FINALLY. Squeeze is the soundtrack to my life. My personal favorite is "Take Me I'm Yours" but you literally cannot go wrong. Also, Paul Carrack, who starts off the vocals here, did vocals on SO many great songs, as your viewers have already commented below.
Squeeze has at least 30+ incredible 3-minute pop song gems to their wonderful catelog. Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford (Founders and Co-Lead Singers) are one of this generations best songwriting duos. They are often righfully compared to Lennon & McCartney. Discover more Squeeze, you'll love the journey!
@@ed.z. Yes, I agree. Wishful thinking is correct. Being compared to Lennon and McCartney is a huge compliment. But not even close. To me anyway. 😁 And I will *also* agree with you about their album. It *was* pretty darn catchy and promising. I loved it and I still do.😊👌
Hey guys, the second verse singer the one yous raved about is the actual lead singer of the group Squeeze. His name is Glenn Tilbrook. The low voice is actually Elvis Costello of Elvis Costello and The Attractions. Elvis produced the song for them and sang on this track with them. Listen to more Squeeze and you will hear more of Glenn Tilbrook.
Sueeze were a great band, and their keyboard player, Jools Holland has had the greatest music show in the world for decades. He's introduced so many new artists and a LOT of great performances from all the legends. Check out 'Later, with Jools Holland'.
I still remember KT Tunstalls debut on Later, which was because of someone else pulling out, doing black horse and the cherry tree as just her, guitar and a pedal for making loops. Gutsy thing to do for a telly debut where one mistake could break the song but she nailed it. And yeah jools rhythm and blues orchestra are great in concert.
@@andybrown4284 BINGO! I still remember that too, and I remember my 2 sons and I watching when the Darkness debuted on Later, it was truly a magic moment! Also Lenny Kravitz playing the guitar like Hendrix.
Keyboardist Paul Carrack was the lead singer on this song, but was only part of Squeeze for about a year. He rose to fame as the lead singer/songwriter of Ace, which had a massive one-hit wonder with "How Long?". After he left Squeeze, he joined Mike & The Mechanics.
Carrack actually returned and did some work with Squeeze (Some Fantastic Place and Spot the Difference albums)as did Holland after his departure (Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti, Babylon and On, and Frank albums). Saw them with Aimee Mann at Toads Place in New Haven in July 1994 and hung out with them getting baked in the dressing after the show and got a publicity photo with the members of the band at the time including (Paul Carrack, Glenn Tilbrook, Chris Difford, Pete Thomas and Keith Wilkenson). “How Long” was the last song they played.
Their original version of this was an up-tempo Beatlesque power pop version but Elvis Costello -- who produced this track -- suggested that they slow it down and inject a bit of an R&B feel. He was brilliant.
The song is about a guy who was in a relationship, got 'tempted' and cheated, and it broke up his first relationship. Now he's struggling with missing his ex (that he can't get back) and trying to get on with life. Classic!!
The lead singer, Paul Carrack was also lead with Ace "How Long" and with Mike + Mechanics "Living Years". Very talented man and is still singing today!
*Black Coffee In Bed* should definitely be the next one! *Squeeze* is such a great band. Other hits you might wanna check out from them. *Pulling Mussels, Another Nail In My Heart, Up The Junction, Take Me I'm Yours, and Hourglass.* Jay and Amber this will be a fun rabbit hole for the both of you. *Love ❤️ Peace ✌️ and Happiness 😃 Y'all !!*
Squeeze has a lot of good tunes. "Hourglass"... "Coffee in Bed"... "Annie Get Your Gun".. "Cool for Cats"... "Pulling Mussels from a Shell"... " If I Didn't Love You" ... "Now That is Love"
Love this song! Since Jay loves piano so much, you should check out Joe Jackson. His song, Stepping Out has a lot of piano or Is She Really Going Out With Him. Joe Jackson is a great pianist.
The ‘clean cut’ voice you liked was Glenn Tilbrook’s who usually handles Squeeze’s lead vocals - and you’re right, he has a fantastic voice. It may be heresy to say it, but I think I prefer the later Live versions of ‘Tempted’ after Paul Carrack had left the band where Glenn handles the vocals. You should check out ‘Third Rail’ and see if you can hold the note on ‘rail’ in the closing section as long as Glenn does - it’s not studio trickery, I’ve seen him do it live! Good suggestions below for other tracks, but a more recent song is ‘Cradle to the Grave’ which is excellent. For a deep dive I personally love ‘Cupid’s Toy’ a great Squeeze melody and brilliant Glenn vocal.
By the way, the other voices besides Carrack and Tilbrook are all done by Elvis Costello. One he's trying to sing with an extra low voice, the other extra high.
“Tempted” tells of the narrator’s futile attempts to stay faithful to the woman he addresses in the song while dealing with temptations on the road. Squeeze had a secret weapon to help put the song across in keyboardist-vocalist Paul Carrack. Carrack joined the band for East Side Story, and his soulful vocals found some profound, buried emotions in Difford’s guilt-ridden to-do-list. It’s a credit to Difford that he is willing to show his narrator’s struggles maintaining his fidelity, as opposed to writing another clichéd anthem about the rock star on the road pining for his girl at home. For his part, Tilbrook created a melody that’s both instantly catchy and sturdy enough to endure. And Carrack pulled it all together with a vocal that makes you feel every bit of this guy’s torment, which is crucial to making him relatable to the audience.
That was one of my favorite songs of the 80's!! Another song I've never seen requested is "T'Pau - Heart and Soul". You'll appreciate the dual layers of audio which makes the singer, Carol Decker, sound like she's singing a duet with herself.
One of my favorite songs OF ALL TIME. I sing it for karaoke a lot, lol! Paul Carrack is an amazing singer and Squeeze is so criminally underrated here in the US.
Guys, I LOVE Squeeze! They had some great songs.... but Jay, seriously, if you want a song to get hyped up before a Bengals game, do Squeeze's "Annie Get Your Gun". It starts off fast and never lets up till the last note. One of my all time faves. "Black Coffee in Bed", "Hourglass", and "Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)" are also bangers. Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook do the majority of Squeeze's vocals. However, the man doing most of the singing here is Paul Carrack. Another suggestion - this song was produced by a very talented musician named Dave Edmunds, and I think you would LOVE his song "Slippin Away" (another 80s banger). Finally, the band is just called Squeeze. The "UK" is added because I think (not sure) that there was another band with the same name from the US around the same time, and they "UK" was added so there wouldn't be any confusion between the two. I could be wrong, though.
@@DorkThink Great band. I'd love for J&A to do "Best Friend" or "Mirror in the Bathroom". They DID do "Tenderness" by General Public, though, which featured Dave and Roger from The Beat.
More Squeeze PLEASE!: 👍😎 "Up The Junction", "Cool For Cats", "Black Coffee In Bed", "Pulling Mussels (From The Shell)", and "If It's Love". Please do the official videos for "Cool For Cats" (the energy in this one always makes me smile 😎) and "Up The Junction" (British slang for being in trouble, similar to the American phrase "Up the creek without a paddle").
Another great Brit band of this period (SO MANY) that I didn't get turned on to until the advent of MTV then backtracked to rediscover their earlier stuff. Understated but so clever and COOL ;D Love when the "Dip, dip, diddip, dip" comes in. Try "Black Coffee in Bed"
Always thought of Squeeze as the thinking band.. 10cc from the 70s was sort of the same thing.. guess it's because every member of both of these bands were as talented as the next.. this was a big hit in the USA. But Squeeze has so many great songs ..you opened up a big bag here.. loved your reaction..
I've loved these guys for 40+ years! Their 'East Side Story" album has been in my top ten forever, the other voice you noticed is Glen Tilbrook, one of the most underrated singers and guitarists around. Is That Love, Messed Around, Cool For Cats, Take Me I'm Yours, Is It Love, i could go on and on.
I was disappointed to find out that Paul Carrack wasn't the main singer when I first became familiar with Squeeze and purchased that album. Said to myself about Tilbrook, "why is this other guy singing most of the songs and not Paul?!!" Not too long after, Glen, the band and that album became an all-time favorite for me. So many great songs on East Side Story.
Squeeze is such a great band! Check out their album Argybargy. The second vocalist is the actual lead singer of Squeeze.his name is Glenn Tilbrook. The lead vocalist on this one is Paul Carrack, he was not a regular member of the band, I believe he played on this one album. Great band very popular in Great Britain.
Just a great British band, with several great songs. Although this song was only a moderate chart hit, it has gained greater popularity after appearing in movies,TV shows, video games and commercials. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
Squeexe was a seriously cool band! Great voices, great talent. Please try 'Black Coffee in Bed', 'Another Nail in My Heart', 'Up the Junction'....anything from them, really. Can't go wrong!
Now you're coming across the real 80's writers. Squeeze was almost like a British Steely Dan, with some great players and writers floating through this "project band". 💖💖
Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford...the 2 great songwriters in this band. Glenn was also the 2nd vocalist with that nice clear voice. Glenn has also sung on a number of their hits including: Pulling Mussles From A Shell, Another Nail In My Heart, and Black Coffee In Bed. Paul Carrack on keys and vocals is also great on a later track, Loving You Tonight.
Paul Carrack is the lead singer on this. Same guy who sang “How Long” for Ace, and “The Living Years” for Mike and the Mechanics. All three were very big hits for different bands, but the same lead singer. 👍
Saw them on tour last year with my favorites, Daryl Hall & John Oates, and they were very good! Paul Carrack does lead vocals on this song. One of my favorite singers. Would love for you to check out his song "Don't Shed a Tear."
I love Squeeze! Saw them in concert back in the late 80s. Their greatest hits album has alot of excellent songs. My favorite record of theirs is Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti.
Squeeze was like the second house band on Saturday Night Live after the original Blues Brothers band left and before GE Smith and his band who appeared on your channel with Hall and Oates. Great song
A tremendous band with a superb catalogue of material. You really should check out 'Labelled With Love', 'Black Coffee In Bed', 'Is That Love?', 'Up The Junction' and a host of others. The vocalist you focused on who sings a single line in 'Tempted' Is Glenn Tilbrook, who is widely regarded as the band's main lead vocalist, though vocals were shared throughout the band. He features on all the tracks I have recommended. In addition to being amazing musicians and vocalists, their lyrics are always moving and meaningful. Most of us who grew up with their music in the UK singles charts of the late 70s and early 80s know all the songs by heart. Legends.
" "Tempted" was cowritten by Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford. Difford wrote the lyric while the band was taking a taxi to Heathrow Airport. The descriptions of the city and airport sights are interspersed with the narrator's ruminations on a relationship that is failing, or has failed, due to his own infidelities. As Difford recalled, The original story behind "Tempted" is we're going on another American tour. I got on a taxi and I started writing down what I saw lyrically. I don't know the course of time of how long it took, but then I gave Glenn the lyrics and then Glenn put the music to it. It's an extraordinary song. It's one of the most played songs that we have in our catalog.[2] Unlike most other Squeeze songs, which are sung usually by Tilbrook or Difford, the song's lead vocal is sung by newly recruited keyboardist Paul Carrack. According to Carrack, this was the result of a suggestion by co-producer Elvis Costello: They’d actually recorded a version of that song before I was on board. Dave Edmunds produced it, and it was completely different. The song was in the can, and we were recording the other songs from East Side Story when we had some downtime and played ‘Tempted’ but in that slow, soulful, Motown groove. Elvis Costello, who was producing, ran in and said, ‘Let’s put this down on tape!’ So, we did, and Elvis said ‘Paul, you should sing it. [3] Tilbrook recalls, "[Carrack] did a remarkable job [although] my ego was bruised initially."[4] Though the original arrangement, according to Tilbrook, "sounded like ELO," the final version song instead features a Temptations-style performance that featured Tilbrook and Costello performing parts of the song's second verse. Tilbrook considers this one of his favourite songs: "It was our first song. It was when we grew up, really, as a band. When we finished it I couldn't quite believe it was us."[5] Difford also named the song as a favourite, saying "I do love 'Tempted'. It's so visual and again floats me back to that time when youth was a cloud I drifted around on from day to day".[6] Squeeze bassist John Bentley ranked it his fourth favorite Squeeze song." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tempted_(Squeeze_song)
The lead guy is Paul Carrack. He was with ACE, Squeeze,Mike and the Mechanics, and had some solo stuff. He definitely got around as a singer songwriter. Y'all can do a whole day on Paul and the bands he was in. Ace- How long Mike and the Mechanics - The living years. Paul Carrack- Don't shed a tear Just a few options. Luv you guys. Have a good one.
Squeeze is a criminally underrated band. Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook were amazing songwriters. So many great songs: Black Coffee In Bed, Pulling Mussels (From The Shell), Another Nail In My Heart, Up The Junction, Cool For Cats, Take Me I'm Yours...the list goes on.
Ok, I’ve waited soooo long for someone to react to Squeeze, I need to calm myself before replying………………………… Squeeze are a great band, one you’ll love because they are storytellers! It’s all about the lyrics. Well they’re good at it all but the story is the most important thing. As others have said, Black Coffee in Bed, Annie Get Your Gun, Cool for Cats, Pulling Mussels From a Shell & so many more great songs. Paul Carrick was with them for only a very short time. The two main songwriters & singers are Glenn Tilbrook & Chris Difford. Please do more & while you’re at it check out Alison Moyet, start with All Cried Out or That ‘Ole Devil Called Love’ Thanks guys x
Karen's right. It's all about the lyrics with squeeze. One of the saddest songs you'll hear is "labelled with love". If you listen to the lyrics of that song it's heart breaking.
Paul Carrack, the lead singer and keyboardist, had hits with Squeeze, Ace, and Mike and the Mechanics. I had the honor of seeing him back Ringo Starr with Ringo's 2003 All-Starr Band tour. Paul did his three big hits, Tempted, Living Years, and How Long.
Another reaction channel featured this recently, and wow, I hadn't heard this song since maybe the 80's, it had been lost to time for me. I've been singing this around the house since I heard it recently, so thanks for being a part of keeping great music alive. As sometimes we put things away for whatever reason, and it's good to dig them out from time to time.
This was such a classy song from day one! This band has several singers. Two really great singers. They tried to get the original band back together for a long time now but several members won't do it. They just did a tour. Check out Black Coffee In Bed and Pulling Mussels. Peace, Love, Courage from David in Detroit.
Still one of my top three favorite bands. Although they're a British band, Chicago loved and still loves Squeeze. I saw them in concert several times. The thing that impressed my musician friends at several concerts was that Tilbrook sang lead, played lead, and controlled the sound monitor system with his feet at the same time. Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook are really talented writers and artists. After one concert, Tilbrook kindly walked one of my buddies through some of the more difficult chords in one of his songs.
You have come across one of the UK 's iconic and best loved Bands. Now seen as a "national treasure" . So many amazing songs , so lyrical , so intelligent and just so good. Enjoy exploring their extensive catalogue.
That deep voice btw was Elvis Costello who produced the song, albeit didn't appear in the video. I recommend Another Nail in my Heart, Up the Junction, Black Coffee in Bed, Annie (Get your gun) and Cool for Cats. Though to be honest they have so many great songs.
Squeeze are my favourite band after The Beatles. I've seen them quite a few times live and they're always great. But this is not the usual singer for the group. Glenn Tilbrook the guy with the blond hair who sang the second verse that starts"I'm at the carpark" is the usual singer. The guy singing is Paul Carrack who was in a band called Ace in the early 70's and had a big hit with How long. He was in the band for this song and the album East side story that this came from. Then he left. But he joined the band again for they're Some Fantastic place album and tour in 1993 then left again. I've saw Paul live to a couple of times and he is great as well. He was the singer in Mike and the mechanics who did the song Living years that I think you may have already reacted to. I've saw them live too and they were great. Saw Glenn Tilbrook live a few times as well in small venues and along with being a great singer he is an amazing guitar player. Also the guy who writes the words to all they're songs is Chris Difford and Difford & Tilbrook back when this song came out were classed as the new Lennon & Mcartney as they were thought of as that good. Chris is actually one hell of a word smith. Check out a song by them called Some fantastic place about Glenns first girlfriend who died in the early 90's it's just wonderful. I'm going to see Chris live on the 5th of December in a solo show in a small venue in London and I've never seen a solo show by him. I'm very excited. Oh and round about the time of this song they played Madison Square Garden in New York and it sold out. They never got as big as they should have but because of this I've been able to see them in quite small venues and met Glenn and got his autograph. Oh and Miles Copeland who was The Police's manager was they're manager as well. And as A&M records were so happy with Squeeze they asked him if he had another group. His brother the amazing drummer Stewart Copeland had just started out with The Police the group that Sting got famous in. He then got them a deal with A&M and they actually became the biggest band in the world a few years later. Oh and why they are called UK Squeeze in this video is that there was a band that had the same name in America. I don't think they were very big. So only in America they are called UK Squeeze in the rest of the world it's just Squeeze. And they're original keyboard player was Jools Holland an amazing piano player. He left the group in 1980 and made his own albums. He has a band called Jool's Holland and The Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and the original drummer in Squeeze is also in the band and he plays Boogie Woogie type songs and again I've seen him live a few times and he was great. He also presents a live music show called Later with Jool's Holland thats been running since the early 90's on BBC TV and it's a great show with new and old music groups and singers mixed together. Squeeze have had many line up changer over the years but for the last 10 years or so it's been nearly the same band. But what ever line up I've seen they've alwas been great live. Glenn is actually doing a solo small tour of America just now.
*Wow memories!!!!!* SOOOOOO GOOOD!!!! Always loved this band and am so glad you do too. The guy with the "clear cut singing voice" is Glenn Tilbrook, he sings lead on my suggestion below. Lead singer on this one is Paul Carrack. The mops are supposed to represent the females tempting him/them, hey this was only 1981, things were just starting to get crazy LOL. This is my favorite song of theirs but somehow I never saw this video. Very cool, it's really great to see them having fun like that, from what I understand a couple of them really had problems with each other. The band is made up of some rock royalty, check into their wikipedia page sometime it's amazing. It's just too bad that the original line up didn't last. My fondest memory of this song is not great for mixed company so I'll keep it clean. A long time female friend and I used to get together once in a while and get drunk and reminisce about old times. One night she came over and we were drinking and chatting as usual, all at once she gets up and rummages thru her bag, pulling out a CD she walks very slowly over to my stereo glancing over her left shoulder at me every few steps with this look on her face. This song starts and she does a VERY sensuous striptease to it and you can probably figure what went on from there, TY Squeeze for a night I'll never forget. 😈 You gotta do "Black Coffee In Bed" next th-cam.com/video/t9QZhLSKEps/w-d-xo.html Another excellent song of theirs. Peace
One of my favourite bands. The first record that I ever bought was their hit song 'Cool for cats' (in pink vinyl). 🙂 Squeeze are still one of my regulars on my playlist, so many great songs. Please react to 'Labelled With Love', a classic much appreciated by a fast aging ex-pat.
Squeeze were a MASSIVE influence on pop in their heyday, and the main singer, Paul Carrack you've already appreciated on the Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics!
I LOVE that you finally made it to Squeeze which in not just one of my favorite 80s bands but favorite all time. They are story-tellers so each song is like a short story set to music, It is the sort of band that had members coming and going so there is more than one Squeeze sound but Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook (currently touring) laid the backbone from album to album. Tempted is from an album that Paul Carrack took over on keyboard and as the lead singer here. He had some solo success in the late 80s with Don't Shed A Tear and with the super-group Mike and the Mechanics. If you want to hear more Squeeze look for their best-of album 45's and Under or, my personal favorite album Play from 1991. If you want more videos, Pulling Mussels From A Shell is second to Tempted but also Up The Junction, Another Nail In My Heart, Hourglass, Is That Love,.
I have always been a "Squeeze" fan. My All-Time favorite song is, "Black Coffee In Bed" you need to do a reaction to it. Such a clean sounding song. Souns so pure.
Today is obviously your London day! Squeeze is still recording today, almost 50 yrs after its lead singer, Glenn Tilbrook formed it with lead guitarist Chris something. They've split and reformed about a dozen times over the years. Many consider Squeeze amongst the leading bands of the Britpop era, alongside Dire Straits. There are lots of echoes of Lennon and McCartney in the original duo.
We always knew them as Squeeze, at the time at least anyway. Check out "Up The Junction" "Another Nail In My Heart" and "Pulling Muscles From A Shell" by them
Such a great band, Squeeze is in my top 5 bands. Tempted is good but they have so many others that I really love. Black Coffee in Bed, Another Nail in My Heart, Is that Love, Pulling Mussels, so many more. I hope you give them another listen.
Squeeze were like country music for new wave kids: all the songs were about drinkin' and cheatin'. Their best lyrics IMO were in the song "Up the Junction"
I scrolled to find someone else making this comment first. I have never seen this video for the song and distinctly remember the video where the band played in a studio with female back-up singers. For some reason, it isn't an official upload but people have put it up from time to time with adjustments to it.
Squeeze! They were one of the best bands of their time and their music has stood the test of time. Catchy tunes with somewhat barbed lyrics. Brilliant. I still listen to at least a dozen of their songs on a regular basis.
As others have said, Squeeze was great - part of the 2nd British Invasion. So many great songs- Pulling Mussels (From the Shell), Black Coffee in Bed, Cool for Cats.
Difford and Tillbrook are as accomplished a team of songwriters as any. In my mind their gift is variety. "Hourglass" is a perfect example. Be carefull exploring that rabbit hole. It is deep and wide.
Paul Carrack is the opening singer in that one. He was previously in the band Ace ("How Long?") , then Squeeze, and Mike & the Mechanics ("Living Years"+), plus a successful solo career ("Don't Shed A Tear"). Incredibly traveled guy.
“Pulling Mussels …” is one of my favorite songs of all time. Such a banger of a pop song.
I think Paul Carrack has been in every British band at one time or another. Even though Glenn Tillbrook and Chris Difford were the main songwriters and frontmen, Jools Holland played with them in their early days.
Wow you taught me, I had no idea. I love "The Living Years".
Also, I'm pretty sure I saw him in Dexy's Midnight Runners "Come On Eileen." Am I nuts? OR was he just EVERYWHERE?
@@ronbruno5942 yup, Jools played keyboard on the first 3 albums, left the band in 1980.
The first singer here, Paul Carrack was also the lead singer in the group "Mike & The Mechanics" Living Years. He is still touring, he has the most beautiful voice. 😍 🎼👌
Don't forget he was the lead singer of Ace (How Long?) in the 70's, and was the pianist for Nick Lowe's band.
Didn’t know that was him in Mike and the Mechanics
Came to say this right here.
Paul carrack is very influential and busy in the 80s. He had a solo career as well and a solo song called no more tears.
This is a super fun song. Plenty of soul, nice vocals...shared vocals! Instruments are great and it goes down easy but its also got a pretty complex chord progression.
He had a great album titled 21 Good reasons
Squeeze's "Black Coffee In Bed", "Pulling Mussels From A Shell", and "Up The Junction" are 80's classics!!!
Three really great songs to hear for the first time!
"Up the junction" my favorite 🥰😍🥰
Also "Hourglass" for best weird video!
And "Cool for cats"🙂
I was going to suggest those exact 3 songs plus Another Nail in My Heart.
This song is about regret. His girl left him. He embraces the single life but anyone that he is tempted by only reminds him of her. He stays away from the temptation in hopes to get her back but she's moved on.
Definitely this. This song makes me feel so lonesome, knowing that feeling of regret - a chapter ending and not yet ready to move on.
The recurring lyric "there's no other..." gives it away.
Elvis Costello was the ‘deep voice’. Loved this band forever.
saw 'em live twice! 😍
Wrong.
That would be Chris Difford.
@ Costello produced the track and sang backing vocals in the second verse.
god we had the best music in the 80's....dance dance dance, that's all we did.
FINALLY. Squeeze is the soundtrack to my life. My personal favorite is "Take Me I'm Yours" but you literally cannot go wrong. Also, Paul Carrack, who starts off the vocals here, did vocals on SO many great songs, as your viewers have already commented below.
Oh I love that song! I wonder how many songs of theirs I know and love but never knew the band's name. Lol X)

Yes. that's it. Gilson Lavis, who mimed the low part, is the drummer and didn't do any vocal parts as far as I remember.
Tilbrook was also supposed to sing the lead until Costello heard Carrack do an impromptu version and assigned it to him.
Sueeze were a great band, and their keyboard player, Jools Holland has had the greatest music show in the world for decades. He's introduced so many new artists and a LOT of great performances from all the legends. Check out 'Later, with Jools Holland'.
Still are! I saw them in concert a few years ago.
This song was actually sung by Hollands replacement Carrack, Holland had left to persue a solo career.
@@andybrown4284 BINGO! I still remember that too, and I remember my 2 sons and I watching when the Darkness debuted on Later, it was truly a magic moment! Also Lenny Kravitz playing the guitar like Hendrix.

@@chrishoff5291 Aimee Mann and Squeeze at Toad's Place? What a great sounding concert!
"I fumble for the clock,
Alarmed by the seduction."
Great line!
Squeeze makes remarkable, surprisingly complex pop songs! One of my favorites!
Thank you, for pointing out that lyric. I wait for it…… wait for it…… EVERY time!!! It’s on the edge of risqué 😮‼️
The lines leading up to that add to it. “At my bedside, empty pocket, a foot without a sock” sounds to me like he forgot his rubber
Another vote for Up the Junction! It’s such a great story song. I’m sure you guys will love it.
Their original version of this was an up-tempo Beatlesque power pop version but Elvis Costello -- who produced this track -- suggested that they slow it down and inject a bit of an R&B feel. He was brilliant.
Elvis Costello also did a lot of the background vocals too.
I've liked squeeze for about 20 years since my mate use to put them on in the pub. Never knew the lead was Mike and the mechanics!
Paul Carrack is one of my all time favorite male pop singers and has a long list of blue-eyed soul songs.
Was on MTV constantly in 1981, Black Coffee in Bed another good one
Squeeze was a great 80s band! "Pulling Mussels from the Shell" has to be your next one!
Love SQEEZE , Pulling mussels from the shell, they had a unique sound. Jooles Holland was the original keyboardist.
Upvoting Hourglass because of the fun video.

I always pick contrarian songs, so I'd recommend "Annie Get Your Gun". I really dig that one.
"Take Me I'm Yours" is one of my favorite Squeeze songs.
Squeeze has a lot of good tunes. "Hourglass"... "Coffee in Bed"... "Annie Get Your Gun".. "Cool for Cats"... "Pulling Mussels from a Shell"... " If I Didn't Love You" ... "Now That is Love"
"Is That Love" .....
What a great song you picked tonight. Love it. Glad you enjoyed it.
Love this song! Since Jay loves piano so much, you should check out Joe Jackson. His song, Stepping Out has a lot of piano or Is She Really Going Out With Him. Joe Jackson is a great pianist.
Stepping Out is one of all-time favourites.
I never get tired of "Is She Really Going Out With Him?"!!!
Glenn is so good. Love everything he sings, especially the chorus for “Letting Go.”
By the way, the other voices besides Carrack and Tilbrook are all done by Elvis Costello. One he's trying to sing with an extra low voice, the other extra high.
Up The Junction, Pulling Mussels, Is That Love, Black Coffee in Bed, Hourglass and Cool For Cats are other great Squeeze classics.
Ohhhhh, yes!!!! I forgot about that till I seen it and of course I could hear it in my head, great choice
For my money, one the best British Soul bands of all time. ✌️
Labelled With Love, shows Glenn Tilbrook's voice very well. It's my favourite Squeeze song.
SQUEEZE is so much fun. So much talent. Can't wait for you to hear 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞! ♡
British soul--it's a thing. Saw Elvis Costello in 85 and Difford and Tilbrook opened and did this song. Pretty magical.
One of my favorite songs OF ALL TIME. I sing it for karaoke a lot, lol! Paul Carrack is an amazing singer and Squeeze is so criminally underrated here in the US.
One of the best bands in the 80s they have a stack of great songs in the catalogue ,just the best pop songs
Lead singer Paul Carruck has had hits with a few different groups and solo hits spanning from the mid 70s to the 90s.
Same with English Beat, who were just The Beat in England. 😉
@@DorkThink Great band. I'd love for J&A to do "Best Friend" or "Mirror in the Bathroom". They DID do "Tenderness" by General Public, though, which featured Dave and Roger from The Beat.
Upvoting Hourglass because of the fun video.
th-cam.com/video/TNNpQM9TY84/w-d-xo.html
Thirtyish years on, this song still hits me. I loved it when it came out, I love it still
The "voice before the deep one" is that of the usual lead singer Glenn Tilbrook who co writes most of their songs
It is an excellent group
More Squeeze PLEASE!: 👍😎 "Up The Junction", "Cool For Cats", "Black Coffee In Bed", "Pulling Mussels (From The Shell)", and "If It's Love". Please do the official videos for "Cool For Cats" (the energy in this one always makes me smile 😎) and "Up The Junction" (British slang for being in trouble, similar to the American phrase "Up the creek without a paddle").
Super good suggestions. And thanks for the translation of English slang for us Americans.
Cool for Cats is such a great song!!!!
@@cassandracampbell3424 It is! And the video for Cool For Cats is pretty fun, too. I love the energy!
Did you know that Billy Joel's song "For the Longest Time" is a 4 part harmony with him singing all 4 parts? It's brilliant!
These guys come from where I grew up and would play even when famous in our local pub a terrific bunch of guys and so talented.
I am so glad you finally got around to Squeeze. Very under appreciated group. You would love “ Pulling muscles from a shell”. ✌️❤️🙏
Same with XTC! One of the most literate bands, ever!
One of my favorite songs of the 80s.
Squeeze has some unique harmonies and were great storytellers with their songs. ‘Up the Junction’ come to mind.
This is me & my sister singing party-hopping in high school in the '90's. Fuck yeah.
That voice on Glen Tilbrook was beautiful! ( not to mention I had a Huge crush on him back in the day...)
I was disappointed to find out that Paul Carrack wasn't the main singer when I first became familiar with Squeeze and purchased that album. Said to myself about Tilbrook, "why is this other guy singing most of the songs and not Paul?!!"
Not too long after, Glen, the band and that album became an all-time favorite for me. So many great songs on East Side Story.
Glad you mention his guitar playing, which is generally overlooked. He is the master of the melodic, well-composed solo.
Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦
🇨🇦
Squeexe was a seriously cool band! Great voices, great talent. Please try 'Black Coffee in Bed', 'Another Nail in My Heart', 'Up the Junction'....anything from them, really. Can't go wrong!
Sitting here in the intro, thinking about what a treat you're about to hear. Black Coffee in Bed is a keeper too.
Pulling muscles from the shell, another nail in my heart ,some great songs by these guys.
Now you're coming across the real 80's writers. Squeeze was almost like a British Steely Dan, with some great players and writers floating through this "project band". 💖💖
Awesome song used in the fabulous, fun, and quirky movie "Reality Bites"...Thanx so much, Have an amazing evening, Peace
Squeeze are so great such great songwriters Cool for cats, up the junction so many classics
As Difford recalled,
The original story behind "Tempted" is we're going on another American tour. I got on a taxi and I started writing down what I saw lyrically. I don't know the course of time of how long it took, but then I gave Glenn the lyrics and then Glenn put the music to it. It's an extraordinary song. It's one of the most played songs that we have in our catalog.[2]
Unlike most other Squeeze songs, which are sung usually by Tilbrook or Difford, the song's lead vocal is sung by newly recruited keyboardist Paul Carrack. According to Carrack, this was the result of a suggestion by co-producer Elvis Costello:
They’d actually recorded a version of that song before I was on board. [3]
Tilbrook recalls, "[Carrack] did a remarkable job [although] my ego was bruised initially."[4] Though the original arrangement, according to Tilbrook, "sounded like ELO," the final version song instead features a Temptations-style performance that featured Tilbrook and Costello performing parts of the song's second verse.
Tilbrook considers this one of his favourite songs: "It was our first song. It was when we grew up, really, as a band. When we finished it I couldn't quite believe it was us."[5] Difford also named the song as a favourite, saying "I do love 'Tempted'. It's so visual and again floats me back to that time when youth was a cloud I drifted around on from day to day".[6] Squeeze bassist John Bentley ranked it his fourth favorite Squeeze song."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tempted_(Squeeze_song)
The lead guy is Paul Carrack. He was with ACE, Squeeze,Mike and the Mechanics, and had some solo stuff. He definitely got around as a singer songwriter. Y'all can do a whole day on Paul and the bands he was in.
Ace- How long
Mike and the Mechanics - The living years.
Paul Carrack- Don't shed a tear
Just a few options.
Ok, I’ve waited soooo long for someone to react to Squeeze, I need to calm myself before replying…………………………
Squeeze are a great band, one you’ll love because they are storytellers!
Please do more & while you’re at it check out Alison Moyet, start with All Cried Out or That ‘Ole Devil Called Love’
Thanks guys x
Karen's right. It's all about the lyrics with squeeze. One of the saddest songs you'll hear is "labelled with love". If you listen to the lyrics of that song it's heart breaking.
@@jonathanmaybury5698 How could I forget that one?! Love it
Paul Carrack, the lead singer and keyboardist, had hits with Squeeze, Ace, and Mike and the Mechanics.
One of my favourite tunes ever
I saw these guys in concert. Still the best concert I’ve ever been to, particularly “Black Coffee in Bed”
Love Squeeze and love Paul Carrack. This song is just about perfect with them together like that.
The lyric was written on the back of a cigarette packet in a taxi to the airport as the band were leaving for a tour.
This song was used in many commercials from Burger King to the GAP
Fantastic song. They had a massive list of hits over in England but not as many here in the U.S. This has been on my playlist for years...
This is a great British band. Do more of their songs please!
*Wow memories!!!!!*
SOOOOOO GOOOD!!!!
You gotta do "Black Coffee In Bed" next th-cam.com/video/t9QZhLSKEps/w-d-xo.html Another excellent song of theirs.
Peace
I forgot how much I love this band. Thanks for checking it out. They have a ton of good songs 🎵
One of my favourite bands.
The first record that I ever bought was their hit song 'Cool for cats' (in pink vinyl). 🙂
Squeeze are still one of my regulars on my playlist, so many great songs.
Please react to 'Labelled With Love', a classic much appreciated by a fast aging ex-pat.
This is one of my favorite songs in spite of the subject matter. Paul Carrack is a beast on these vocals and I just love the song.
Squeeze were a MASSIVE influence on pop in their heyday, and the main singer, Paul Carrack you've already appreciated on the Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics!
YES!!! Also give a listen to Pulling mussels from a shell, Another nail in my heart are bangers
And getting better live. I’ve got a ticket to see them in November and so looking forward to it.
Cool 80s groove! I love the tempo in which the vocals are delivered.
Squeeze were like country music for new wave kids: all the songs were about drinkin' and cheatin'. Their best lyrics IMO were in the song "Up the Junction"
Always loved this song. Paul Carrack is an awesome singer. This video was shown in the UK, the MTV video shown here in the US was very different.
I scrolled to find someone else making this comment first. I have never seen this video for the song and distinctly remember the video where the band played in a studio with female back-up singers. For some reason, it isn't an official upload but people have put it up from time to time with adjustments to it.
@@Tr0nzoid Yes, that's the video shown in the US, with the girl backup singers. When I saw this one I was like, WTF?
Squeeze! They were one of the best bands of their time and their music has stood the test of time. Catchy tunes with somewhat barbed lyrics. Brilliant. I still listen to at least a dozen of their songs on a regular basis.
This is pure Motown pastiche. Think of the 70's Motown ensemble groups and you'll see the inspiration.
