Oh yeah I’m definitely heading South! That’s what I meant when I said I’m planning when to be where based on the weather. But I think a lot of people didn’t catch that, so my bad for not being more clear!
Greetings from a genocide survivor from 1975 to 1979 during Pol Pot era and after the Nam war was over. Most of my family members were completely wiped out. I was very lucky as my labor camp was along the river and I could sneak out at night to catch my food. I was a good diver / swimmer during my high school years then. Happy fall from Minnesota. Stay warm and be safe out there!
Propane as in a Mr Buddy? Don't waste your time and money...! they create harmful fumes, a lot of moisture, and just radiate a small amount of heat. The only good choice is to set up a Chinese diesel heater. It's dry heat that will warm your entire van quickly. They don't use a lot of power. Some people run them off a Jackery. But a better solution is switching to a deep cycle agm starter battery. Good luck 👍 cool channel name btw!
You got wheels, might as well roll out down south if you can, where it might be a little warmer, and figure out a longer term solution. Plus you (and me)get to see some different sites! Good luck, it looks like you’re having fun, and doing great. 🍀
I don't have a heater, I've been in ----30° I have 3 sleeping bags, one for minus 30, .. I keep few windows cracked for free the condensation...that's just me..tough country boy
Always crack a window, which seems counter productive, but it serves two purposes. One it helps alleviate condensation & two it's a lifesaver when using propane. Sleeping on the floor you'll be at the exact level of the propane as it settles. Contrary to many peoples thoughts unlike smoke it DOES NOT rise. Also install a propane alarm close to the floor. As stated previously install a Deisil heater. The deisil heater tank can be an auxiliary stand alone tank mounted outside. There's no life threatening issues with Deisil as there is with propane
You may have already discovered but in case you haven't get rid of the memory foam mattress. It will actually FREEZE generating an immense amount of cold that's inescapable. Plus, as winter tent campers are aware, take off as many clothes as possible, down to your skiivies, to allow body heat to radiate in the sleeping bag. A WOOL blanket will be of immense value for additional warmth. And finally install a diesel heater
Might be cheaper and less worry to just turn on your car sometimes and run the heat? Also, consider buying a ton more blankets at the thrift store to stay warm cheaply? A huge winter puffy coat, insulated pants and booties also can really help. We camped together once on the SHT. Good luck! I’m hiking the Arizona Trail now and will be travel long all winter myself!
Oh no way! That’s awesome!! Glad we connected again! I bet the Arizona Trail is super cool. I’m really excited to explore that part of the country more
Agree, I always get cold easy!! Definitely keeping feet, hands, n face warm is helpful. Maybe, a heating pad, or electric blanket? Stay safe n warm, n always enjoy ur adventures! ❤️🙏🎃
Hi! Once when I camped in a tent I used a "tent in a tent" theory; When inside my tent, I also erected a blanket ABOVE my body leaving a gap by my head, so that it looked like a triangle - a low and long tee-pee, if you will, (not touching me but suspended) and then I was under another blanket/sleeping bag under THAT, with only my head exposed inside the outer tent. I got fresh air but my body stayed so warm in my tent-in-a-tent, as my body heat didn't escape. Hope that makes sense.

Hello, I have been sleeping in my pickup truck when I deliver travel trailers for several years now in my back seat. Bundling up is necessary I've tried the Mr. Buddy propane heaters but he propane heaters and the biggest problem with that is you have a lot of condensation that happens with those propane heaters. You might end up with mold and everything else in your Van if you use that. The other thing is you should get a carbon monoxide detector. What I would suggest is when you can afford it get A espar gas heater. You will not get any condensation and it will sip and I mean really sip off your gas tank. Is there a little bit pricey but well worth it. They work just like a diesel heater but they run off gas. Espar has both gas & diesel models.
Oh man! I would hate to get mold in my van! Everything is wood, cloth, or foam, so I’d have to replace everything! Gonna definitely try to avoid that then
I got a solar panel and AGM battery installed! They’re sooooo handy! Here’s more of an explanation if you’re interested! th-cam.com/video/m5GAR4UCzCI/w-d-xo.html
Maddie, we live in Ontario and have camped year round here as well as thru the US. We have used Mr Buddy heaters for 20 years and love them. You need to follow the manufacturers instructions carefully and understand these types of heaters. First they don’t burn, they catalyze. To me they give off no fumes. The also don’t warm the air they warm objects. Even in our trailers with propane furnaces we rarely use the furnace due to the battery consumption especially in the cold. I have no problem with the fuel based forced air heaters but to me I’m not sure if I’d trust my life on a no name Chinese heater. Lots do though. You also have to be ready to get it installed or put holes in your van. Either way I’d suggest you start with a Mr Heater Buddy. They aren’t expensive and easy to get. Either way for any heater you need a CO detector and a propane detector if you are using propane in the van. We have a small 5 pound propane cylinder stored in our van, well secured. For the most part I don’t leave the Mr.Buddy on all night, just the pilot. If I’m up in the night and I’m cold I turn it one for a while. Then in the morning I turn it on full and let it heat things up before getting out of bed.I have left in on all night when it’s been really cold though. You hear of lots of accidents with Mr Buddy Heaters but it’s usually someone not following the instructions. The last one I remember was a guy in a sealed van who had modified it and was trying to cook a roast on it. It’s also worthwhile to get a cheap small electric heater just in case you find a place with an electrical outlet you can use. That and a good quality 12 gauge extension cord. Good luck keeping warm. Easiest way is to head south!
Good to hear from someone with so much experience! I’m still wary of Mr Buddy but it sounds like you’ve had pretty good success with it. Hopefully it just never gets too cold where I am!
@@BeerinBeautifulPlaces the way I figure it since Mr Buddy is a US company they’d of been sued out of existence long ago if they weren’t safe for indoor use as certified. The small one is pretty cheap and would be a good backup to keep around, especially if you use the green 1 pound propane canisters.
I’m going with larger solar for heat and ac. 4 ea 200 watt panels on top of sienna. 4 ea 100 ah lithium batteries. 500 watt heater and a 600 watt ac unit. That should moderate my cabin temp.
I have a question about clothes/wardrobe. How many items of clothing do you use/recommend? 10 shirts- half short sleeve and have long sleeve? How many sweaters? Pants? Should I keep it to 2 pairs of jeans, some hiking leggings, hiking pants? Regular bras and sports bras? Regular socks and sports/running socks? I’m getting ready to move into my van (148 med roof Transit) soon and am getting nervous. Thanks.
I got you!! I just counted 18 shirts, which is a little too much! You should be good with 10! I only have two actual sweaters but 4 sweatshirts, 3 fleeces, 1 rain jacket, 1 puffy coat, and 3 flannel shirts that I wear over t shirts when I just need to be a little warm. So 12 warm layers total, which is again too much! About 9 would probably be better, although you could get away with 4 or so. I like having a lot of options because I wear them so often, but that’s not really essential. I have about 10 pairs of shorts, which I love having a lot of for hot summer days. When it comes to pants, I have 2 leggings, 1 hiking pants, 1 sweatpants, and 2 jeans. I could use another pair of sweatpants and rarely ever wear jeans. You are definitely on the right track thinking variety! I have about 15 pairs of both socks and underwear. I thought, if I wear a whole new outfit every day, how long do I want to go before doing laundry? And my answer to that was two weeks. But to be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever run out of either, so you really could do 10-12 pairs of each. Remember variety when it comes to socks, if you’re preparing for warm or cold weather! And for bras, 2 normal and 2 sport have been just fine for me! I really hope you see this answer and it helps! I’m so excited for you starting your journey! It’s such a powerful feeling!!

Just the blue flame on a stove burner will get the job done, crack a window, and don't fall asleep with it on,.may wake up dead.
