Matt, this is a great idea and thanks for sharing this. I want to add another idea, that has worked super well for me this past year that I discovered just trying different stuff. I've been using tiny zip ties, in bright colors to add a unique color band look to the worms- something a little different fish might not be seeing much. I gave up on the rubber band products- either they slip too much or they swell or dissolve quickly. I just turn the small grip knot on the tie to the inside. You can apply them as tightly as you prefer and use a large variety of colors depending on the contrast you want. Also the will slip up and down with just a little effort to reposition quickly. I'm finding that the make the worms last a really long time time, never swell or dissolve. Various watermelon colors with the bright yellow ties have been working very well for me.
I go through 1 pen every 2 weeks at work, I always take off the spring in them and used them for things like this. Saves you a lot of plastics especially when drop shotting.
Just use a small zip tie (black in color). Cinch it down over the middle of the worm, cut off the excess plastic of the zip tie, slide hook under the zip tie without penetrating the plastic worm. One worm can last most of the day.
For ten years, now, I have been using a similar concept that has been working just fine by using the "poor man's" approach. I pre-rig a few sticks "of my own choice" by using the springs that came in cheap ball-point "click" pens and, after screwing them sideways into the worm/Senko, snipped them flush to the bait's body with a pair of side-cutter pliers. Later on, I was able to find assortments of similar screws at hardware-stores. Bigger/thicker baits required heftier springs but the idea always seems to serve my needs. "Building" a few worms ahead of hitting the lake, made it easy to keep my line in the water and not have to build one while trying to fish. The system you have shown looks like it will work just fine, Matt and, in concept, is quite similar.
@MattStefanFishing ive kinda kept this setup to myself for the better part of about 4 years now up here in Oregon. Yes, it works amazing with a centering screw pin for fishing Wacky/Neko rigged. And the way you were describing how the worm slides up your line when the fish is doing its head shakes to try and throw the bait is spot on. Works just like you were describing, Its AMAZING! You should definitely fish your Wacky/Neko rigged setups like this from now on. You save soooo much more senkos "stick baits"
I keep all my old pen springs and use them for my wacky and neko rig worms. You can stretch it out a bit and get around 3 to 4 rigs out of each spring. It's cheap and I don't rip through my baits as easily, especially the senkos and roboworms.
Been doing this for decade; i never bother telling anyone anymore about tips and tricks, because people think i'm being too technical when comes to fishing
That’s a great idea. I will try that. I have been putting a little piece of clear heat shrink around my General, hook only the heat shrink perpendicular, then push a 1/16 oz tungsten nail weight (no head) through the heat shrink which keeps the nail weight from coming out when I am skipping. I am losing far less worms and nail weights, still catching fish.
Great info Matt! An an alternative for wacky rigging Decoy has a worm holding spring that comes in 3 sizes. It can also secure a fluke style bait where the bend of the EWG hook near the hook eye and eliminates any tearing. Good luck at stage 👍
That’s how I rig em , now get the hook with the double wire weedguard from Gamakatsu, the wire bends back an clips on the tip point of the hook , and it’s super weedless
I started using centering pins this year for drop shotting finesse, solid head tubes. Bait life extension has been great, even in smallmouth water. They'll pluck all the tentacles off the tubes before they tear off the body & head. I could not recommend more highly.
Nice tip! Haven't used a centering pin but did order some over the winter that were too small that should work perfect for this. Also have all three sizes of the Geecrack that I'll be trying this weekend for the first time.
Heck yeah dude. Those pins are a good way to “toughen up” a plastic hook entry. It works good on the nose of a fluke style to do like a banjo minnow thing. Also works on those poop baits. Plastics can last a lot longer. 👍🏼
I like the sword shaped holder you have coming. (Can’t recall name.). I’ve found that they are a little flimsy such that I sometimes use 2 of them not to pull through the worm. I’ve used the centering pin as well. If the pin goes all the way through the worm, I use wire cutters to gut off the access on the other side. Both work. Also live the VMC crossover.
been doing this for years...honestly, I think the shrink wrap is more stable and makes worms last longer. When fish are finicky, I like the centering pin.
I use multiple sizes of transparent plastic straws. Using scissors cut about 1/8th inch cross sections. Slide it on from the small end of the worm then place your hook Neko or wacky style. Lasts through several catches.
I recently got some of your core tackle wacky rigs that has this same centering pin on it and I already had some wacky dual hooks that I picked up awhile ago. These used an o-ring which I am not thrilled about so I has some of these owner centering pins (large) which matched the same diameter as the Core Tackle setup. I put these on and it really has made the setup a lot better! Thanks for sharing this with us and your Core Tackle stuff is awesome!! Thanks Matt!
I wind 4” spring coils myself using touching wraps of 0.012” stainless wire (32lb test) around different diameter nails, etc. Use touching wraps so that you have more coils … you can always pull on the coils to get the end to the preferred coil gap size when on the water inserting it into your bait. And tight winds store better and are easier to work with when pushing the loose wraps into the bait. The different diameters are needed to fit different baits, and also allow you the option to put the spring into the nose of an EWG-Hooked bait to keep the bait from sliding down the hook. The same spring in a bait allows you to hover rig a jig hook in the bait…. I insert the jig hook first then twist in the spring. I have a million other uses for 0.012” stainless wire in lure craft so buying o-rings, VMC crossovers, shrink tubing, clear tubing cuts marketed for Senkos, and using pen springs are all unnecessary cost for me. I store the springs in a small transparent plastic tubes (hobby store).

You should try using some clear shrink tubing. You can achieve the same variation as far as how you orient your hook. An added benefit is that it strengthens the worm where the hook goes in rather than pre-weakening it by hook penetration alone or by screwing in one of those screw in attachment points. Everyone does it their preferred way I guess. If you're way wins you the big money then, that's the way to go with though.
Best stock up on those pins as bad as the fish sling the bait off!!! Even tried the spring method and got tired of losing so many baits and re-rigging, went back to the silicone sleeve and crossover ring as far as wacky rigging
If you are just fun fishing this is a solid trick, but if you are a tournament fisherman the best way to rig a neko or wacky is to simply put your hook through the worm. When a fish bites it it will either slide up or the worm will tear off allowing the fish no leverage or nothing to get in the way of hook.
Seems like an interesting idea. I’ll have to try that. Something I found on Flukemaster’s channel was he was buying some heat shrink on Amazon, cutting a piece off slide it on the worm up to the egg sack and melt it so it shrinks onto the worm. It’s been pretty successful for me but I’m fascinated by this idea too!
I don’t know…. IMHO, the lightest Core Tackle wacky shot is the way to go. It gives the worm GREAT action, and from what I’ve seen it doesn’t sink THAT much faster than a weightless wacky rig. One of Core Tackles best baits, IMHO. But, with that said, this has been around for a while. Those pins are VERY cheap, and it does work. I used them exclusively, as an affordable alternative to the VMC rig/tool (which are WAY overpriced), and they worked great. But, I’m completely sold on the Core Tackle Wacky Shot. That’s such a great rig. And, not all stick baits fall the same. But, with that bait, you get a really nice consistency, regardless of senko-style bait being used.

I finally found a few fish today on Headwaters, and caught my two biggest fish today on the Wacky shot, but I lost my third, RIGHT AT THE DAMN BOAT!!! The great thing is that I saw its side profile at the side of the boat,and reached down to grab it and it shoot it out right before I could “lip” it. Oh, well….at least I got to see it up close. That had to be 8lbs, which is a size that lake is known for, and then some. The other two were 4-6lbs, and hit that senko like it owed them money. Big, mean, aggressive fish today. Not many, but nice sized bass. But, why are those hooks so damn small, Matt??? The two I landed were barely hooked, as well, but deep in the fishes mouth. I’m surprised I got those back to the boat. It’s not like I’m not setting the hook well, but it seems like that hook isn’t getting buried very well somewhere in the roof of the mouth. Like I said, I had a great time, but was wondering if you experienced that, or if I’m doing something wrong. That rig was the only thing they would hit today (with a Junebug Senior), but they downright hammered it.👍
I use the Geecrack Neko hack, make sure you open the hole so the hook can slide through after fighting a fish. I love the concept but lost alot of fish so I went back to the Crossover Rings.
@@MattStefanFishing i use a screwdriver and and small screw to screw into the hole of the Geecrack Neko Hack. It makes the hole a little bigger, but i have lost some good fish on that rig because the hook eye gets caught too much on the Geecrack Neko Hack. I have gone back to VMC Crossover Rings and G7 Worm Tubes.
I sometimes use just a piece of shrink tubing that I heat with a hot air gun at home I have a ton of centering pins from somewhere ill try on but im thinking it will slide my hook in all kinds of positions I dont like
It does work great. you just have to be careful when rigging a small diameter wacky hook as you can throw the bait. I screw it in flush that way you can add some of the plastic to help hold the hook. Also, as your plastic rips after a few fish you can unscrew it turn 90 degrees and screw it back in. Gets a few more fish.
Cross over rings are great provided you can get them around your bait. The advantage the cps has and the geecrack is wacky or neko rigging larger baits
Soft silicone tubing cut up in pieces. It'll slide right over the senko and is much cheaper. Can get like a 25 foot roll of it for 20 bucks, and it'll last you forever.. Cross-over ring is better for neko rigs though.
I did that before for wacky, But it will also eat up some worms line Senko brand or Mann's brand, They are very breakable and tender, So I decided to stay with electric tape and oh man that thing works very well, Highly suggesting to try that. Wacky worm is my first technique when I actually really want to catch fish and not playing around, in any body of water.
I use clear soda straws cut in pieces about 3/8 to 1/2 inch ,keep small medium and jumbo in my worm box. Oh there cheap most places just bring them with your drink
I find those Owner bait springs with centre pin, chews up the plastic. You'll find your worm will go flying off, and a chunk of plastic on that spring. Solution: remove that centre pin, and use as a bait screw. I've been using this on my Neko rigs since 2017....
Curious to see how this works before I try it lol. I’ve tried other hacks but always go back to roughing worm a little bit and running hook straight through worm.
I’ve. Suggested this before Iff you want weight for for Neko rig. You can pinch a. Spitshot On it twist it in the nose of the worm. What weight you want. That screw locks. Don’t come lose. Save money 💰 on expensive nail weights.
It will work on thin worms just bend the worm and center it you can keep twisting it in till it's all in takes a little practise to get the worm straight , small cps
I don’t know much about the centering ring but the VMC crossover ring works good. I noticed an article in my B.A.S.S. magazine that quoted a guy named Matt and he mentioned some baits for FFS one got my attention he Finisher it looked like a small Jerkbait but when I got them they were very heavy I know they are used on FFS but now that I have two can you do a show on how to use them if you don’t have FFS?
I've done this before but had a problem with small fish pulling the worm off. I was using a General maybe something not as soft wouldn't pull off so easily
I don't fish wacky rig a hole lot but I can say the last 3 days I have been catching all my fish on a coretakle swim jig the goldilocks and guilty pleasure are 2 great colors
I personally don't like the o-rings for wacky or neko so I've been using the small screw locks just like that. I learned it from a vid a while ago. I thought I learned if from your channel? Maybe it was a different channel? It works good!
Shrink wrap has treated me very well wacky rigging. I do nose hook my flukes with cps tho. One can order a bag of chineseium cps springs for a mere pittance.
VMC crossover ring is far superior because you do not penetrate the worm, the ring slides over the worm and the hook is positioned the way you like it without penetrating the worm as well. Unless the fish actually bites the worm and tears it you never Have to change it out ...
I have tried this, but found the worm gets damaged easily, unless you keep the eye of the twistlock outside of the worm. But then occasionally the worm would fly off ㅠㅠ
@@MattStefanFishing I absolutely whacked em down on the Harris chain in the marsh on lake griffin with David dudleys wacky worm design. But they are very fragile as it seems to be with any soft plastic that works well 😅. Been experimenting with rigging to help with that was only getting 1-2 fish out of a worm, this might be my answer. Appreciate the info and all the content!

I believe cut off tooth picks would also work. Orient pick as needed. Add superglue to make worm last longer.

Cross over rings are great provided you can get them around your bait. The advantage the cps has and the geecrack is wacky or neko rigging larger baits
Soft silicone tubing cut up in pieces. It'll slide right over the senko and is much cheaper. Can get like a 25 foot roll of it for 20 bucks, and it'll last you forever.. Cross-over ring is better for neko rigs though.
I did that before for wacky, But it will also eat up some worms line Senko brand or Mann's brand, They are very breakable and tender, So I decided to stay with electric tape and oh man that thing works very well, Highly suggesting to try that. Wacky worm is my first technique when I actually really want to catch fish and not playing around, in any body of water.

I use clear soda straws cut in pieces about 3/8 to 1/2 inch ,keep small medium and jumbo in my worm box. Oh there cheap most places just bring them with your drink

I find those Owner bait springs with centre pin, chews up the plastic. You'll find your worm will go flying off, and a chunk of plastic on that spring.
Solution: remove that centre pin, and use as a bait screw. I've been using this on my Neko rigs since 2017....

huh, I'd wrap a little bit of that clear first aid kit tape w the holes like a half inch wide around center. makes a senko last half the day wacky.

I’ve. Suggested this before Iff you want weight for for Neko rig. You can pinch a. Spitshot On it twist it in the nose of the worm. What weight you want. That screw locks. Don’t come lose. Save money 💰 on expensive nail weights.

It will work on thin worms just bend the worm and center it you can keep twisting it in till it's all in takes a little practise to get the worm straight , small cps

noticed an article in my B.A.S.S. magazine that quoted a guy named Matt and he mentioned some baits for FFS one got my attention he Finisher it looked like a small Jerkbait but when I got them they were very heavy I know they are used on FFS but now that I have two can you do a show on how to use them if you don’t have FFS?

I've done this before but had a problem with small fish pulling the worm off. I was using a General maybe something not as soft wouldn't pull off so easily

I don't fish wacky rig a hole lot but I can say the last 3 days I have been catching all my fish on a coretakle swim jig the goldilocks and guilty pleasure are 2 great colors

I personally don't like the o-rings for wacky or neko so I've been using the small screw locks just like that. I learned it from a vid a while ago. I thought I learned if from your channel? Maybe it was a different channel? It works good!

VMC crossover ring is far superior because you do not penetrate the worm, the ring slides over the worm and the hook is positioned the way you like it without penetrating the worm as well. Unless the fish actually bites the worm and tears it you never Have to change it out ...

I have tried this, but found the worm gets damaged easily, unless you keep the eye of the twistlock outside of the worm. But then occasionally the worm would fly off ㅠㅠ

@@MattStefanFishing I absolutely whacked em down on the Harris chain in the marsh on lake griffin with David dudleys wacky worm design. But they are very fragile as it seems to be with any soft plastic that works well 😅. Been experimenting with rigging to help with that was only getting 1-2 fish out of a worm, this might be my answer. Appreciate the info and all the content!
