I feel like their main prey would be the Moloch, evolved specifically to crack the shells, then stab into them for the kill. And because they travel in groups, there is plenty of food for the pack and no reason for competition.
It makes a ton of sense... the matriarch is a zombie like hammerhead due to the fact is life time is gone and the spawns are pretty much defenseless... like when the octopus female takes care of their eggs in an automatic defense mode... they just protect them and then when they hatch they eat their mother carcass... this looks like something like that
I almost exclusively play singleplayer, so all I know about the monsters are that they make a bunch of breaches in the hull and it sounds like they take a lot of shots to kill.
I don't have much to support this idea, but, its spawn are fully formed and capable of swimming and biting once outside the matriarch, maybe they are held in her bulbous head the same way some ovoviviparous sharks have their eggs hatch in the uterus and the babies depredate on their younger siblings, in this case, maybe even eating the flesh of the matriarch, that last part could be an explanation as to why the hammerhead matriarch genes allows the player to passively heal their wounds
I got to say I loved every single one of your Barotrauma biology/story driven explanation. Its like a little adventure told by a sailor that came back after seeing all the horrors to help others. Absolutely love it
Then your head is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. For real tho these things are terrifyingly fast and are a huge problem to unprepared crews, they might not get inside the sub but will sink it to the abyss instead.
I'll never forget when a Hammerhead mulched me the second I stepped out of the ship to try and draw its attention. Smooshed me right between the frickin' hull and its head, breaking most of my bones and causing me to drift towards the depths. Thankfully, I was caught by an ice berg... Then Crawlers arrived and ate me lmaoooo
We had a strategy to save turret ammo when we faced hammerheads by having our security(me) jump out with a HMG, Axe, Exosuit and sonar beacon. Most I took down was 8 at a time. Had to kill last 3 with an axe after running out of ammo. Of course I was heavily drugged and genetically modified
Really appreciate the in depth look at the hammerhead species in Barotrauma. Your videos make me feel like listening to a veteran sailor on a submarine somewhere deep within the Great Seas of Europa..
My theory is that every born Hammerhead is a male and every one of them has the ability to switch to a female if need be like a clownfish, either an old Hammerhead that has it's head already weak and unable to hunt becomes a female to prolong it's species or Hammerheads have a "mating ritual" where two males are fighting for which is stronger by just raming into themselfs until one is unable to continue, the loser becomes an female while the winner will fertilize tha female. Also the reason why Matriarch Hammerhead sems to be in a degredation state is possibly cause their head is also their mouth, which is replaced by an egg sack after the switch, and to give the young nutriens Matriarch quite literally is breaking down it's own body for nutriens for it's young untill they will be ready to hatch by themselfs, and even after the hatching the body of Matriarch can sustain the young for sometime

Slight correction. The matriarch does spawn with friendly hammerheads, usually minimum 3
