  • This is a Beginners Guide to wheel throwing beautiful fluted bowls.
I love making Fluted Bowls and other kinds of textured bowls on the pottery wheel. They are fast and fun to make and they (usually) come out so beautiful.
This is a good type of pottery for beginners to make. They look much more impressive that what they really are.
There are, however, some challenges in making fluted bowls. First of all you got to make sure you have thick enough walls to be able to do the fluting. But also, you need to prepare for how - despite the strong textures, that you will get the lightest possible bowl in the end. That is no so easy. But with a bit of practice you will learn.
In this video I will show you everything you need to know to make your own fluted bowls.

I tend to make heavier pottery also. Fluting is sure tricky to make it even all the way around. You do such beautiful work.

You can first put it on a piece of paper, rim side down, where you have drawn a circle with lines, now you can use needle tool to mark evenly spaced indictors on the piece, or a graphite pencil (that burns off in the bisque fire)

Coning the clay, especially if it’s a dense clay, is very difficult for me but it’s a part of the process that has to be done. I need to have stronger arms!

Technique is more than half of it :-)

I've had clay come off the bat before too, very frustrating. I find that I can get it to re-stick if I dry the bottom of the clay ball simply by wiping it on a towel, and wiping the bat. The fluted bowls are beautiful, and you make it look so effortless! Can't wait to see them glazed. Thank you!

Hello, I’m new to pottery and have been binge watching pottery videos. I noticed you didn’t wire off the bowls from the bat. Wouldn’t it be easier that way instead of allowing it to dry on the bat?

I usually dont as I do first trimming when its still attached. Also for pots ghat dont need any bottom trimming I dont wire off at all as they are released autimatically on the bats I use

What makes those bats that release different?

if the fluting tool isn't tempered you might be able to bend it? It's really a nice shape bowl.

Thanks. The two different ones are good. Just, for these ones the Mudtools worked best
