- Yamaha QY10 Sound Module Sound Demo - No Talking
In this video I run through the Yamaha QY10 sound set. Although it is a very basic device, I found it very useful for filler sounds and drums when I was doing music in the '90s. Let me know in the comments if you would like me to do an overview of the features. With an 8 track sequencer and the tiny "VHS" format, it could do surprising amount for it's time.

This is exceptional, can’t imagine how much patience you must have program all of these sequences
Sorry to disappoint, but it was done on a DAW via the midi in. Just the sounds are the QY10.
Very impressive demo , I love old hardware ,I’m primarily a guitar player and know not much about this so it’s helpful to see all the available sounds
Thanks. It's such a basic piece of kit, but still fun to work with.
I still have mine. I bought it new when it came out. I was my first modern device and that sequence is great. I got a Qy-20 soon after and made three albums with it.
I got mine in maybe '93. They were being sold off cheep (£90) and I needed some basic sounds to write music with for my music degree. Similarly, I've got about 2 albums worth of stuff, some yet to be released, but I'd like to use it again with some modern effects. I expect to use a few ideas from this video for a new track or two.
@@RunningonairMusic Yeah that is why I have held on to mine all of these years. Since all of these small desktop synths like the Korg Volcas have come out I have been thinking it would be a great little sequencer to pair with them.
@@matrixmirage2699 Yes, it should be able find a place in the "Retro DAW-less" live set, I would have thought.
@@matrixmirage2699 pls share if you do!
I buy one in Germany 1993 - it cost >600 DM (today 300€) and was the coolest Bandmate
This little thing improve my one man band in the 90s. Genius Machine🎉
Yes, it helped me a lot too.
@@RunningonairMusic i ve sold mine 10years ago. Because of DAW. But some Pattern i miss and rebuild sometimes
I got my QY-10 just a few days ago an still are working through getting it to know.
There's not much useful Information regarding this old tools on the net.
Your DEMO ist a great piece of information, so please keep up posting this kind of stuff.
Would be great if you showed a little bit of your workflow (not just the resutl 😀 )
Thanks, I'll consider doing more of a tutorial but I'm mainly into just using sounds currently.
V11 distorted guitar is the preset used on Elastica's "Connection". Very nice.
surprised anyone has used it!
Apparently Damon Albarn still has his! I really like odd little synths, thanks for the demo.
No problem
ALL the song “” connection “” was made by Damon on his QY10 ( you can hear the drums and distorted guitars preset in the intro) and he still have the demo inside his QY10 !!!!!!
@5:24 The intro to "Connection" by Elastica (& Wire)
Good to know it's useful for something!
Amazing movie👍
Glad you enjoyed, Thanks!
Really nice to hear those sounds with a little bit of reverb added. Which plug-in (or hardware device) did you use?
Thanks, I considered just doing it dry, but I thought there would be no way you would ever do that in real life (well, for most of the sounds at least), so opted for a basic reverb wash. It's Valhalla Supermassive BTW.
Sounds good
Cheers
Nice work !!
Thanks!
I never even CONSIDERED the fact that I could just hook up a MIDI keyboard to these QY modules… I feel so stupid…
Well don't feel bad about it.. I still haven't used the sequencer!
At 5.29 is the sound used by Damon alban on the elastica connection track?
No idea, I don't know his stuff but I seem to remember someone saying he'd used it.
No choir patch? What a shame it would probably sound great and lofi
The vibes are good for that digital crunch.
Thanks! Is it possible to create your own chords progressions?
It has a built in sequencer, so yes you can input anything you like.
Sell your QY10 and get a QY70. They are going for around the same price on the s/hand market nowadays.
The only reason i have the QY10 is so i can reproduce music i did in the 90s authentically. Im probably leaning more towards software to do music now. I might well check that out at some point though.
No ways: first handed workstation and preset used by Blur etc etc
The QY70 is great, but it's a completely different world because it's a vastly more advanced, later execution of the same concept. The charm of the QY10 is how primitive it is.
The qy10 has some really nice crunchy sounds, which makes it quite an interesting little box.
Quick question. Can you use this to sequence synths/ external gear? Thanks
Yes, i believe so. Best to check the manual though.
thx i need one shot of all instrument to make a virtual one for windows. Can you do that for me please ?
I'll put something together next time I get the QY out, but it won't be for a while.
Ha ha the sounds are awful 🤣. I got a Korg 05r/w for GM sounds so this would just be a duplication lol.
It's very basic, yes.
It sounds nothing like GM sound. Sounds like video game, maybe Super Nintendo. This is why I like it. I had to buy one.
True.
It's got a similar sound to what was around in the PSS range back then.
Yes absolutely awful that s why for exemple Damon Albarm used it and love it …. And by the way one of the most famous song in History ( Thriller) and one of the most sound on Thriller comes from a small absolutely awful … Casio … Stupid comment
@6:42 between the sound and those first 2 notes I thought this was going to be NIN “Sanctified” 😂
Not this time. 😃
