Great showcase. Thank you very much. I was impressed by the flexibility of the LFOs as well. I would never think of modulating an LFO with another LFO, nor did I realize that the circuit lines were missing because they're all interchangeable.
Glad it helped!
Great intro music 😎 and excellent to hear the baby D series tones 👍
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Amazing stuff mate!
Thanks!
The difference between ring modulation and amplitude modulation was truly a mystery to me. The specific model I know of is the KAWAI K1 series. This model is equipped with amplitude modulation, and many other analog synths have a ring modulation function. The explanation of ring modulation is that it extracts the sum and difference from two inputs, while amplitude modulation is when you modulate the amplitude with a high frequency oscillator, not an LFO, and can generate sideband harmonics, resulting in new harmonics. Yamaha's CS series analog synthesizers had a high upper limit LFO modulation speed, which allowed them to generate sideband harmonics, making ring modulation a non-necessary feature.
Thanks
Looks like on the Sax Card there are only 4 multi-samples of sax sounds. Tenor soft and hard and alto soft and hard. Do other cards have as well so few additional samples to the internal array?
I think there is a limited amount of data due to the size of the cards. You might be able to find the information you want here sector101.co.uk/waveblade.html
How do I change tuning? Eg.. I'm playing an acoustic piano which is not I'm concert pitch and is not in tune with the sound Canvas 🤔
It may be possible by send a midi sys-x message via software, you could check the manual for information about that.
i like the ambient and the dark voice. Thanks
Thanks!
Who is currently playing? The red and blue or the unmodified original image?
Sounds are played hardware then software.
It would be well worth getting an earthed anti static mat to work on. Although carpet is soft and useful for taking things apart, for working on boards you want to reduce any possible static build up. If a mat is not suitable then an earthed wrist band is helpful.
Yes, I think that's worth considering. until recently, I've been working in the kitchen where the floor is wooden, so you don't get the same build-up of static. But I'm moving operations to my office, where there is carpet, and so yes the wrist band might have to come out a bit more.
good video. I recently repaired a D-20, probably the most annoying repair I've done! Horrible cable connectors, awful layout and very prone to chip and component failures. All working now and it was only £25 so can't complain. You had the right approach - Frankenstein 2 or more together to get a working synth. Do you still have the spares D-20 case parts? I'd buy the end cap right side if you want to sell it.
Thanks. Let me check the condition. I think it's the left one that got bashed up, which why I can't be bothered to restore it.
@richardsmith4992 Hi, I've got the end cap. It needs a clean and has the usual signs of ware but also it has a not particularly noticeable crack in the centre. If you think that's worth exploring, send me a message and I can send pictures over.
@@RunningonairMusic Great - emailed you.

My OCD brain requires me to inform you that the ESQ1 was manufactured around 1987, and the Mirage was the first Ensoniq product that was manufactured in 1985.
I know the feeling 😄. Here is a review from 1986 www.muzines.co.uk/articles/ensoniq-esq-1/1633
This video is the best demonstration I've seen of this synth. I'm really excited to try mine - I was just gifted one by a friend.
It's a great synth! Enjoy!
wait, so desolder a cable then resolder it to the new lcd each one like that? 3:00 What about desoldering all the cables first, then resolder to the new lcd?
Sure, do it how you like.
@@RunningonairMusic oh, im so new to soldering, i just don't know which way to do it. That's what I was asking
@@popcycles I see, the only reason I did it that way was to make sure the wires were connected in the right order. So as long as you get that right, it doesn't matter how you do it.
You can test buttons by entering a test mode, 'K2061 Scanner Diagnostics'. At least, I can on my K2000 V3, OS 3.87. In prog mode, press 4,5,6 simultaneously. It will cycle display of all LEDS, then enter the test mode, where the battery voltage and wheel centre values are displayed. Any button/key presses or control movements are displayed.
Thanks, good to know.
This is apparently for OS v3.5 ROMset. My ESQ-1 is running v2.0 so the MIDI screen menu is not the same as his. I cannot load the esq1-factory-presets.syx on either MIDI channel 01 or 16 using MIDI-OX. v2.0 only has options to send/receive from either a tape or from a Mirage over MIDI. Bummer. Now just waiting til next week for the v3.5 ROMs to arrive...no love this weekend other than 40 patches of BRASS 1 hehehehe.
Have you tried sending on the mirage setting?
Nice, sounds like a bit of a beast!
Umm, i hardly hear any difference.
But there are sounds i hear difference.
Thank you good sir!
No problem!
Love the content. Thanks for sharing.
No problem!
5 Years! I think the longest I've had between getting and repairing was about 2 years - you win. My rule is if it's still in bits after about 6 months, give it another go...then re-ebay it for spares. The mainboard did look pretty corroded, maybe a spare board will come up to swap over, D-10's are still pretty cheap for parts. I have one of those desoldering stations, very handy but I find the gun does clog up far too often if the old solder is claggy and turning into paste - which it usually is on older gear, I keep the little cleaning rod handy.
Yeah, I think that's a record for me, but I feel I could do much better and probably will! I need to do some detailed diagnosis to work out what the sound issue is. It only affects about half the sounds, so I think it's a problem on one of the sound ROM chips, a missing link on the data bus or something. I've not had any problems with the solder gun yet but I'll watch out for that. Thanks for the comment!
i just got my s20 and it powers up r16 shows up on display but after some minutes the characters just start scrambling fast do you know what may be the cause?
Unfortunately, it's generally not possible to diagnose problems remotely. You need to find a qualified technician or resell on eBay.
@@RunningonairMusic DO YOU KNOW WHERE A SERVICE MAUAL COULD BE FOUND I TRIED LOOKING ONLINE BUT IT SEEKS LIKE THEY ARE GATEKEPT
@@miscmisc1023 I wasn't able to find one online either. Your best bet would be to join a synth repair group online. There's a good one on Facebook. There maybe someone who can help there.
@@RunningonairMusic i did some searching there is actually a diagnostic mode by holding erase stop and reverse while powering on the unit
Hopefully that will help then.
Does the rack have the same sound banks as the SQ1. I have the SQ1 but was looking to maybe pickup the rack to take up less room.
Yes, as long as it's the same version.
Hi, can you explain me how to open this editor?
Hi, You can find the editor here: archive.org/details/sy-35-ed
How do repair the sound because mine came no sound of it how do i repair that
There could be many causes. You will either need to take it to someone that knows audio electronics or sell it on eBay as not working.
The best way to figure out effects is to play the knobs and listen. After that you can look into the theory.
Theory helps you predict the effect of each control. I would say the best approach is to do both together.
Love the technical rundown, always good!
Thanks
the outro tune is nice; love that retro vibe
Thanks, it's the first track on the last album. You hear the rest on bandcamp.
Are they setuped different? On some presets they are pretty different, modulation deph, attacks
They should be the same as the patches are imported from the CZ1
Mine is coming in a few days - really excited now I see it used with a good editor and that final tune was fantastic! Any idea where that CTRLR panel has disappeared to? Everything redirecting to github now and I can't find the old panels - thanks in advance!
No idea, it looks like the original project web page has closed, which is a real shame. Might be worth checking out archive.org
@@RunningonairMusic I'll track it down somewhere - cheers for getting back to me!
Hi, you can find the editor here, archive.org/details/sy-35-ed
Okay, definitely subscribing. I have an ESQ-1, and while it’s a delight to play, programming is another story. I’m still trying to figure it all out.
Thanks, I hope the videos help.
yeah it sounds thin, like needs some saturation idunknw arturia ..i can here a good difference
whats the name of the electr. piano preset in the virtual cz? I cant find it!
I only used the OG patches from the CZ1
@@RunningonairMusic how did u „recreate“ them on the virtual cz?
I just imported the sysx files from the CZ1
@@RunningonairMusic are they somewhere available to load into the virtual cz?
Great video, what did you use to record this demo?
Whatever is most convenient. My phone for video usually and sometimes audacity for sound tracks.
Thank you for the demonstration. I look forward to hearing your other videos. I’m looking for a VST like this instead of Hardware keyboards. Does this have on board the famous Vox Humana and Vox Humana with Cesar which Gary Nuwman is well known for using on a lot of his material? I’ve got a similar package from the App Store called Syntronik on board my iPad and indeed it is very good but I’m wondering if the VST you are showing is more advanced. I certainly look forward to seeing your other videos of you demonstrating the sounds on board.
Yes, I believe it's there somewhere. Lots of other great sounds though.
This is so good!
Thanks, it's a fun track for sure.
I got pretty lucky. I just found one on marketplace and got it for $160. Looks like i eventually need to solder a new battery in it however
That's pretty good!
@@RunningonairMusic I thought! Thanks for all your TH-cam videos. Really informative
No problem, thanks for watching!
Magic.
Cheers!
When I select OSC 1 and try to cycle through different wave forms the sound doesn't change very much, or rather is just stays as whatever sound was selected from the internal bank before pressing OSC 1. In the manual it says to select a program labelled BASIC in the internal storage before selecting the OSC but I don't seem to have that option. Any idea why this might be or how I can fix it? Thank you so much for making these videos they are amazing!!
It's quite possible that the memories have been overwritten so that could be an issue. Is the oscillator actually on? You might be listening to the others, or a mixture of all three.
@@RunningonairMusic If the memories were over written is there a way to restore the synth to it's default settings that might help fix the issue? I believe the oscillator is on, but i'm pretty new to synths - when I select OSC 1 it goes into the OSC 1 settings on the dash board. How do i know if it's actually on or if i'm hearing a mixture? When I cycle through wave forms in OSC 1 the sound changes slightly depending on which internal sound was selected before I pressed the OSC 1 button but the change is so slight that I feel something isn't working correctly and with others it doesn't change at all. Thanks for replying to my question I really apprecate it!!
You need to enable disable oscillators at the DCA. I think the best approach is to work through the manual step by step. Also if you are new to synths try looking at a few TH-cam introduction videos. I can't really help you from a distance.
@@RunningonairMusic I will give that a go, thanks for the tips.
The only differens between the two is that the CZ-1 have stronger fundamental frequencies then CZ-V and that CZ-V have louder high-mid to high frequency harmonics then the CZ-1. Which to me gives the CZ-1 a more pleasant rounder sound plus that some of Arturias presets seem to have a slight detune between the oscillators. My guess is that it’s either a programming issue of the Arturia presets or that CZ-V waveforms can go a bit further with its phase distortion than the CZ-1. Either way it should be a quite easy fix for Arturia to make it sound identical. Nice comparison between the two 👍🏻
Thanks
Can you have maybe an arrow or something pointing to which one is on? I'm not sure which one I'm listening to
The highlighted one is the one that's on.

Hi thanks for this - helped me unravel the mysteries - good video. I notice it's three years old now when you ask for similar voice synths. Are you aware of Emvoice One?
Thanks, no I've not been looking much into this recently.
Do you know anything about the CZ5000?
I've never owned one, but most of the programming would be the same as the CZ1.
hey man, i powered on mine and seems like the adaptor blew, any tips on checking if the actual machine is damaged? appreciate it 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Are you sure the adapter has blown? If so, get a replacement and see if that works.
After when you posted this video, 2 years ago, you probably know what ENH means now lol. The Behringer Wasp has been for ages now been my GOTO for fat bass sounds. I have a Roland Jd-xi and love it as a Groovebox style synth (I have an MC-303 as well), I think everyone that agrees that has one realises that it lacks in Analogue capabilities. This fills the gap for me
Yeah, I have a similar role for it in my setup.
The best walk around video that I could find. You didn't just cover the pre sets. Such a standard thing these days - it seems. Therefore, it was refreshing to see someone explaining the function buttons and capabilities. Well done.
Glad it was of use. Thanks
Which model sustain pedal are you using?
Nothing special just a cheap eBay plastic thing. Best to get one with a polarity switch.
