  • Yamaha SY77 Synthesizer Presets 1 Sound Demo - No Talking
    This is the start of new series or style of video. These will be just sound demonstration with little to no explanation and certainly no talking. The idea is to focus on the pure sound of the synth and try to create meaningful musical examples without the disturbance of someone talking. I'll continue to do tutorials as well but I'll keep the sound demo separate for those that aren't interested in that.

    Just got one of these bad boys for free! Shes got a couple issues to fix up but seems electronically in good shape. Seems like a very powerful synth even for today. The drum samples are so '80s! Killer advanced FM engine, PCM support, built in effects. Pretty cool little beast. Looking forward to playing with it!

      Very lucky with that! I'm planning to use mine a lot more on future projects as well as more videos.

    Yamaha make some of the best gear in the world, it has to be said. My piano and my surround amp are Yamaha and they've never let me down. I have an SY85 that I've owned since about 1994. I've no idea whether the floppy still works but I got the synth out the other day and went through all the sounds - the quality blew me away, and the expressiveness of the velocity response on many of the sounds made it a delight to play. I'm not sure how many differences there are between the 85 and the 77 though...

      The 85 is just awm (no fm), would still like to check it out at some stage.

      @@RunningonairMusic Ah I see. Thanks! Yes, it's an odd beast. Programming the sounds is not like sound design on a normal synth... it feels more like being guided through a "wizard" of some sort, where your choices are nudged towards a particular way of doing things. I'm not sure I've explained that very well!

      Interesting. Is there an editor?

    • @macronencer
      @macronencer ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RunningonairMusic Sadly, no. There's that crowd-sourced universal editor app that someone's made (can't remember the name now) where you can vote for a MIDI editor to be made for an old synth, but the SY-85 wasn't even on the list when I added it. I think the SY-77 was on there though...

    Very good, like the choice of arrangement for each instrument and interesting to see the keyboard notes being played

      Thank you very much! It was quite challenging coming up with so many musical ideas. Good practice for track building though.

    Just FYI: I much prefer tutorials over *sounds only no talking* :) especially when the quality of the learning is greater then the quality of synth presets hehe

    • @RunningonairMusic
      @RunningonairMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for letting me know. I'll still do the tutorials but I thought it would make sense to have the sound demos as separate "no talks". That way everyone gets a bit of what they want. The no talks are also a good chance for me to work on track ideas and by extension provide better musical examples.

      @@RunningonairMusic ah ok 'sounds' and 'talks' in seperate videos. cool. and all wrapped into a nice playlist :)
      I wish more content was wrapped by the author into playlists. Some are. but underused feature.

      Yes that's the idea. Some people only want to hear the sounds, others want a tutorial, so best to keep them separate.

      then why did you watch it in the first place? I think this ( all of them actually) video is nicely done and gives me a good impression of what this synth is useable for.
      I am gonna buy a TG55 tomorrow at a local shop, so this video certainly fulfilled my expectations.

    I wanted to hear all the preset sounds, great video~
    Are there 64 preset sounds?

      There's also presets 2, but I've not got round to those yet.

  • @MIDERA
    @MIDERA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The SY77 has some of the worst presets I've heard in a synth, given the nature of what it is (an FM synth with a ROMpler side). They chose to basically demonstrate their ROMpler side with pretty boring sounds honestly... I don't really understand what they were thinking, other than they were trying to really show off the 'real' sounds they could coax out of this. However, I've never been impressed with their AWM sounds, they are for sure the weakest part of this synth. The FM engine is incredibly complex and sounds so good.

    • @RunningonairMusic
      @RunningonairMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, It's a major problem with many synths of the time. The obsession with producing the sound of "real instruments", it completely misses the point of all the new sound possibilities. I bought the SY77 for the advanced FM side of things, but I'll use the AWM for filler where I can. I'm planning to use it a lot more on my next album project so I expect to get a few more videos out of it. Thanks for the comment.

    • @MIDERA
      @MIDERA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RunningonairMusic Very cool! Yeah, I do find the filter easier to use on the AWM side, although I use it within the FM side too. Once I finally learned to use the 'copy' feature, it got easier to set up envelopes!

      Yeah, especially these drum sounds. I was very disappointed in 1989 with SY77. Like cardboard kicks. But now i sometimes go back to them and detune them heavily on the TG77. With multiple outs it is such a weird drum-machine.

    • @RunningonairMusic
      @RunningonairMusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've not tried using the drum sounds yet so will keep that in mind.

    These are the presets WITH the internal effects (as detailed in the screen) or turned off? I have always wanted a BIG SY after selling my SY35/22. Which are more reliable SY85 or 77/99?

    • @RunningonairMusic
      @RunningonairMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes effects on, the effects are part of the preset. They still sound a bit dry to me in some cases. I can't really comment on reliability. I've only just got the SY77 (I also have the SY35), but the main difference between 77 and 85 is that the 85 dropped FM. I believe it's sample only, but I've not looked into it yet.

      The SY77 is one synth I would try to replace if mine died. Total classic. Yamaha really pulled out the stops when they designed it. The sample set is good but dated, but the next gen FM is very powerful, especially when combined with the samples, similar to the way the D-50 uses sampled attacks. They are very well built. The only issue I'm aware of is a fading display, which can be replaced but requires major disassembly. FM Alive has an excellent editor/librarian for it which is still being updated.

    • @RunningonairMusic
      @RunningonairMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@_P_M_ Yes, it was the AFM that I thought would be particularly interesting. Fortunately mine has a new display, so I should be good for a while. I'm currently trying the SY manger software, it's a bit '90s look and feel but seems to work well enough.
