It gets to ground through the metal chassis of the washing machine which is earned through the supply. I can only assume this is similar to the earth offered by a human finger. Without tne strap to earth it didn’t work. With it it did.
@@MAIDENSHOUSE yes, but what if you connected to the body of the machine instead of the internal metal part. I believe the internal metal part is connected to the ground by the machine, the metal outer body isn't . Your thoughts?

It is copper adhesive strip, but anything electrical conducting should work.
