I imagine this is actually BARBARA HERSHEY'S screen test for the project. The camera work favors her much more...meaning she was the one they wanted to study. Midler was a bigger star that Hershey, and she was already attached to the project at this point. They were just trying to find someone who played well opposite her at this point.
@@mattyd3079 The woman who wrote it sent an unfinished version to Midler and Midler gave her "notes" about changes she wanted her character to have/not have, as I heard the story. Then the book was published. From her meeting with Bette the first time... it was then an 8 year process to get the book and movie done. But yes, Bette was in it from the start as the author wrote it specifically as a starring vehicle for her.
I agree! This scene feels so contrived, like the first time they see each other, they’re besties again without hashing out the jealousy. This one is empty, whereas the one in the movie has more character motivation. But the screen test was probably shot before the script was finished.
Yes, but these shots were like a rehearsal and also they were still playing around with the script and characters. It’s pretty normal in filmmaking. I guess it depends on the director and the actors. Some actors treat the script like gold, others like to ad lib in early stages of production. Some directors encourage it because it can lead to more authenticity. It’s interesting for me to see the development
The screen test was not about the drama and the dramatic pauses., This I think was more to see how the two actors looked together and interacted as well as who could hold their own. The great thing about really great actors is that even if the scene is written badly, They still get the message across effectively. I have been to so many screen tests and Had the opportunity to read with people who are now major A-List actors! You can't always tell if a movie is going to be a hit or even why but you can tell a great actor pretty much straight away.
This was not a screen test for Bette. At this point she had made 3 movies under contract for Disney, and then a 4th (big business) for Disney. all hits. This would be her 5th movie for Disney. She was not getting screen tested at this point after delivering 4 hits to the company. It’s clearly to see if Barbara Hershey and she are compatible.
I always thought Barbara looked older in the first screen test with Hilary and CC making up than she does in the movie like it was shot around the 90s or early to mid 2000s. I'm sorry if that came off as offensive but it's just something I noticed.
You’re right she does look older here. They shot the scenes of the final years first and then Hershey had a little work done on her lips , she put collagen to make them appear plump for the scenes when they reunited the first time in New York.

That's exactly what it is because Midler also had a producing credit as it was her company's first film (All Girl Productions).
I thought the book and film were written specifically for Midler.

The reason they had to do a screen test is because Bette Midler is so flashy and sassy they didn't want her to overshadow who she was playing against.
