funny that you mention that " i dont think seregios specifically selects for rathians over other wyverns", granted its not rathian specifically but capcom did mention that seregios is rathalos's official rival, so that might also play a role as well as to why we see seregios constantly harassing the the wyvern couple.
It might be worth noting that Seregios's extended legs are more than a meter longer than that of Rathalos and Rathian, and its claws (the largest of which are at the front of the foot) are over 60% longer and ~4x the size by volume. Something that wasn't mentioned was that with the zygodactyl feet and the pulling action of its kicks, the number of claws coming into contact and raking is reduced from 3 to 2 (or perhaps 1, given one is larger than the other), increasing pressure and the effectiveness of the slash. It's definitely designed to inflict far more massive injuries with its claws than Rathalos is, which most likely relies on its poison as far as its claws are concerned, and I hesitate to agree that it's designed to bring down smaller prey. It certainly *could* and might have its roots in that morphology, but it's armed with some heavy duty stuff. The Master of Defense does note specifically that Seregios are so territorial that they kill each other in fights over territory, which is why they have a low population, and why it's strange they're out of their normal territory range to begin with, so they should be adapted to fight to the death with similar sized wyverns, with the strongest sending down their genes. (I keep trying to link an image of Rathalos and Seregios claws next to each other in blender, but having a link keeps causing youtube to eat my comments. I'd be happy to share them if I can arrange to do so otherwise) Seregios's jaw also appears to be heavier, and its face more heavily armored. It's jawline appears to be lined with heavy scales meant to aid it's bite, whereas Rathalos relies solely on its teeth. Seregios's wings are far smaller than that of Rathalos, and presumably Seregios is not really well equipped for long distance flight, hence why they're known to be limited to a specific range, whereas Rathalos are known to range seemingly the entire planet. Their shorter wings are likely more useful for quick movements and sudden accelerations, however, and Seregios certainly excels at such. A Seregios's horn is bladed, with a sharp point, and can retract flat against the head. I struggle to think of any particular use for it beyond combat, as it's far too lethally designed; like a rhino horn on crack, and one which the Seregios only reveals when angered and in combat. There's also just a general trend of traits evolving in large monsters seemingly just as a means of combating with other large monsters, as it's the most significant evolutionary stressor most monsters seem to have in such lucrative ecosystems. A Rathalos's tail, for instance, serves essentially no purpose beyond bashing and smashing rivals.
Zygodactyl feet typically are designed for smaller prey, but it doesn't necessarily mean animals with them are limited to them. Eagle owls kill kill small ungulates and foxes similar to or greater than their own mass, but even these very powerful owls typically subsist on lagomorphs. So Seregios may be similar in that whilst their weapons allow for larger prey to be taken on occasion, their typical prey is often smaller than themselves. One of the best videos I've seen about Seregios in a good while, in depth explanation of it's ecology and how it relates to our real world animals. Magnificent work.
I know this is a bit of the older video but I've just been diving into all of your MHEcology videos and loving them! In terms of one of the reasons for the quill's evolution might very well be intraspecies conflict rather than interspecies. As you stated, the scales have been shown to shatter off, get lodged in the attacker's body parts, and causes bleeding/wounds/infection. Given that the Seregios' main form of prey acquisition and combat prowess comes from it's powerful feet, it's safe to say that any conflicts between two members of the species would also utilize these powerful legs to settle disputes. Looking at the Rathian/Seregios fight footage, the Seregios is shown attacking the base of the neck and top of the back of the Rathian in order to pester it away. Assumedly, Seregios would have a similar intraspecies combat strategy for any members that have decided to cannibalize another Seregios' nest or try to drive it out to claim a prime nesting location. The location and placement of the quills would defend against an attack in this style, driving bleed inducing quills into the feet of the attacking Seregios. Most likely, the risk vs reward of this attack wouldn't make it worth for the aggressor, due to an wounded/infected foot being less useful in hunting/general mobility, dissuading the attack just with the presence of the quills in general. Again, I know these are getting about a year old at this point, and I'm not sure if you still check around, but I'd love some input!
An interesting idea I quite overlooked. Quills and spines are typically anti predator adaptations, but if seregios cannibalise each other with any regularity then it makes sense for them to protect against their own kind.
What i love about this series is that even the creatures are referred to as "Monsters", they act and behave like real life animals (for the most part).
Honestly I don’t know much about 4th Gen monsters in general, especially the oddball Seregios. Honestly, I rather have him come back then like Val, Gore, or Astalos due to how little we really got to know this species. Great video as always, as I sorta learn something new in some ways than expected.
Yeah of those I definitely agree. Astalos felt to me just a bit like zappy steve anyway. If Gore came back I'd want him to be in his own DLC, he just felt very flat as a bog standard fight in GU. Glad you're getting something from the vids too, one of my primary goals was to try and teach zoological knowledge through MH as well.
Capcom mentioned that Seregios is canabalistic, which is why the Apex Seregios ran off so many. It was much more powerful and eating the other adults, running them off. Also, I think most people just forget he was a flagship.
I'm surprised Seregios is one of the least favorite flagships by Rage's community. I absolutely love this psycho just from a behavioral aspect alone. Its design isn't too flashy either which is more to my taste than monsters like Zinogre or Brachydios. I guess he's just not as striking at first glance? Or maybe because he isn't on the cover and intro of the English version of 4U?
Bro I love Seregios. The friends I met in MH4U and I made a discord to keep in touch over the last bunch of years. Seregios has been our clan's mascot ever since. Love the bleedin' thing. Great videos btw I use them just about every day to relax and get excited about life again after I get home from work. The technical aspects and genuine enthusiasm (and SOURCES omg) are what make you stand out in my opinion, and are what make this my favorite youtube channel. Thanks for making all of these.
I miss Seregios so much. It's my favorite monster behind Ivory Lagiacrus. Seregios also had, hands down, some of the most beautiful armor and weapons in the game. Not to mention their auto sharpen with rolling gimmick was so cool and unique.
I´m with you (accept Lagi). The weapons are gorgeous and the armor is fitting himself perfectly. The fight is awesome and reminds me of Tigrex, just airbourne. Literally relentless. Also, OUUUUHHH! Thats what sharpens my weapon!
I adore the idea that Seregios is a nest raider, that's a really cool idea. I don't get why so many people don't like Seregios as much, it's probably in my top 3 flagships. Although I'd hazard a guess that it's just overshadowed by Gore Magala in 4U. I really like these videos, as someone studying Zoology and a big fan of monster hunter, they're really interesting. I'd love to see a video on Nargacuga in the future, since it's pretty unique in morphology from other wyverns, especially its tail (and the beak + wingblades)
I also wonder as well if he's viewed as 'just another' flying wyvern too, which is quite unfair. Thanks as well! Nargacuga will likely be getting his own video in the future, just waiting for the Iceborne art book to be released before I start that set.
The descriptions in GU for the horn partbreaks, Seregios Sunderer call it "sturdy yet agile" while the Breacher+ calls it "a sharp, robust horn" so it's not too farfetched to assume they could bash heads while in the air and still be fine.
Hey guys, guess who got into Sunbreak! Also, I was thinking about it, but I believe it is also stated that when a Seregios launches its blade scales, it can do so with immense force and accuracy, so maybe this is one of its means of consuming otherwise venomous prey like genprey and cephalos. I also remember learning that Seregios use their scales to mark territory by leaving them embedded all over the place.
I’m in love with your spin on the Monsters in MH! Keep up the excellent work! Love the 20+ mins per video to. You could take the title of Wycademy's Chief Researcher 🤙🏻
Your videos are incredible! Monster Hunter has a history of creating weird inconsistencies or not going into detail enough with some of their creature's ecologies. But these videos do good work at making the most sense of things.
Ive just stumbled across your monster hunter content and I'm so happy we've got a video about my favorite boy Steve! Great to hear that you became a fan once you got to fight him too!
I would love to see you tackle D&D monsters. AJ Pickett has a channel about D&D monster ecology and consults the various sources and iterations of the monster.
I began playing MH with the MH4U, and the Seregios is probably the monster I have hunted the most for the armors and weapons because I love the monster and the things you can make from it's materials. Knowing more about them from how they are, move and act comparing them with the animals we all know, makes me feel that I didn't know anything from these wyverns. Thank you por all the info and for me, all the time and investigation you made to get those conclusions about them, was totally worth it because the level of detail and care this video has. Seriously, thank you, I loved this video. (Just I case, I'm from Spain, so I'm not very good writing all I want to say in English, but from reading in English and listening videos, so I think I understand it well, I'm sorry if there are misspelled things or some errors)
I’m surprised you never mentioned the one quest description in 4U that mentions a Seregios attempting to court a Rathian or that it seems to have seven fingers (three on the “hand” and four wing fingers)
serigos also have the mouth spike rathian has they may have a common ancestor with rathian or it could have convergently evolve. i really like seregios especially his weapons gimmick
Yeah i think the main set of properly flying wyverns are likely distantly related, seregios may have diverged quite early. And yeah the self sharpening weapons are great!
Not sure about Seregios, but the Raths use their chin spikes to help them gather materials for or smooth out small corners of their nest that they can’t reach with their talons without smashing the entire nest. This was confirmed in the MHW: Official Complete Works.
I had a quick flip through my own copy and couldn't find the mention, but it's good to have an explanation for it at least. The very first artbook suggested it was for feeding but then didn't really support this with actually using it to feed chicks in rathian's ecology video in the first game.
I'm probably the only person who loves all the monster huter monsters and is waiting for them to make a game with every monster from prior games allong with only a couple new ones as you go around the planet hunting everyhting that moves.
One idea I heard about Seregios I really like is they may follow Jhen Mohran and Dah"ren Mohran as they move and pick off the Delex schools that always tail them.
2:20 it looks like a distorted map of the eastern world here on earth. Africa (Sekumea Desert), Europe (Minegarde), Norway and Sweden (Akura Region), Asia, India (Latio Volcano), The Korean Paninsula, and even Australia (Aya) can be seen here. And on the eastern side of the map we see a land mass that looks like the western united states. So I'd assume on the western side of the map we see South America.
The way you've described Seregios lifestyle reminds me of larger oviraptorsaurs such as Giganotoraptor or Citipati. A creature that primarily hunts significantly smaller prey, then predates on other creatures eggs or young by bullying the parents off the nest. He had to be one of, if not my favourite flagship.
Barioth I think likely has live young and it seems reasonable to assume Narg does too. You may be thinking of one of the monster life booklets on Barioth which is where the image comes from?
Love the video. Can you do the graboids from the tremors movies they are ancient predators. The official taxonomic brake down shows there most closely related to cuttlefish. It's also been my personal theory they were a bit part of the dinosaur extinction and why only such small animal survived. Imagine the apocalypse of shreakers eating all the dead and dying animals after the impact like huge heard of saurapods. That might exsplain why they are found around the world as well. It's another theory of mine as to why the African species dosnt have the shreaker form is because of Africa's immense heat makeing them practically being and so many coordinated pack hunters.
My geuss for the horn is to aid in hunting prey larger then itself latching on amd sliceong away with its horn Another idea could be that it is used to help tear open a monster's nest to easily get to the chicks
@@unnaturalhistorychannel I really do hope they would update Magnamalo's turf wars, I was disappointed with Bazelguese and Teostra turf war with him. :(
Interesting you didn't mention where Seregios may come from. In 4U it was briefly mentioned that it apparently came from a completely different land and were fleeing from the Apex one. It was a alien species to the biomes/maps we knew of at the time. Unless this was poor localisation.
They mention that is comes from a specific place but then don't really say what said place is or what's its like, which always left me wondering if they were originally going to build to something more but later scrapped it.
@@nuke2099 it's always possible that Seregios might've been from the new world at some point (perhaps some area of it that World didn't explore), I've seen theories of Seregios perhaps being closely related to Bazelguese (they bear a passing resemblance and both primarily seem to attack using detachable scales), Bazelguese seems to be a fairly common sight in the new world while being quite rare (though present) in the Old World. it's entirely possible that Seregios might be found in the dunes of the New World but we simply never got quests to hunt them since they aren't really an issue when they're not invading other areas of the world.

Kind of sad that Seregios got so dunked on in Sunbreak even though it was supposed to be its grand return. Its weapons lost their gimmick, and purely raw weapons kind of suck compared to elemental and status weapons. They didn't even give it a subspecies or variant!
I don't mind him as a monster It's just the fact in 4U EVERYONE WANTED TO DO THE STUPID SONIC CAT OUTFIT QUEST I can only listen to spin dash sound effect for so long.

Val steve gore and asta proceed to be in Rise/Sunbreak
Upon further thought, Val as in valfalk or val hazaak?
@@brickwallandco.9121 hazaak is “vaal” instead of just val
Hilariously instead of just one of them we got all of them in sunbreak
Capcom: how about...all of the above.
The picture you used of the Secretary Bird is simply priceless! The way he/she looks at that snake is so funny!
The look of one who knows dinner is served!
Your prediction was correct. I need to start listening to you more often instead of the leaks. Steve returned in sunbreak finally.
Gammoth, Seregious, Brachydios, and Nergigante are my favorite flagship monsters
Capcom mentioned that Seregios is canabalistic, which is why the Apex Seregios ran off so many. It was much more powerful and eating the other adults, running them off. Also, I think most people just forget he was a flagship.
I dont even think hes on the NA 4u box art. So yeah makes sense. 4th gen is also mostly gore even the post game apexes are because of gore.
And Rise Ultimate (SunBreak) you're right my friend!!
Seregios would be great in rise especially with the soul skills the weapons could retain the passive through ramp up.
I'd take him back in any game really, we'll just have to cross our fingers for Rise U.
Hes in Sunbreak

Oh my goodness, you ALSO wait for the pauses in the music when it's doing the big kick attacks? That's my favorite part of the fight!
Well, that aged well, my dued prodicted it coming back in rise ultomate/sunbreak. Well done!
He's back
I actually really like seregios it’s one of my favorites I just really like the design
Same, perhaps the most underrated flagship!
Anyone else come back after Steve’s confirmation in Sunbreak?
I've watched all your listed videos so far and love what I see. Can't wait to see your video on Lagiacrus.
Thank you, I really appreciate it!
Don't have to miss him anymore
Seregios is not only one of my favorite Flag Ship monsters he's out right my favorite Flying Wyvern and I can't wait for the day he comes back.
Here after the event
Seregios is back🔥🔥
I adore the idea that Seregios is a nest raider, that's a really cool idea.
Dude omg!!! Love these videos and that Roanoke reference. So glad i found this channel =D
Thank you!
Was looking for a comment like this, love to see you mentioning another biologist TH-camr❤️
I am a giant fan of Seregios. He's supercool and it took me forever to learn how to beat him.
Congratulations he's in sunbreak now
@@biggnesss7192 I saw that! I hope he's super angry and aggressive.
Thank you so much, that's a high honour indeed!
The cutscene used to introduce Seregios has it pursue and attack a Rathian, literally drop-kicking it out of the air.
I want Seregios and the Magala family to be in Wilds so badly.
I love Seregios, it's very interesting and unique! Definately in my top 3 favorites.
Loved this video! Really well made and everything here checks out
Thank you so much!
@@unnaturalhistorychannel ^ ^ thank you! I really enjoyed this! My favorite so far from what I've watched from your channel so far
Your videos are incredible! Monster Hunter has a history of creating weird inconsistencies or not going into detail enough with some of their creature's ecologies. But these videos do good work at making the most sense of things.
Thank you!
Love your videos. You're criminally underrated.
Thanks! Only 5 done so far so who knows, things may grow.
THIS PROVEN WELL WITH SUNBREAK BRINGING HIM BACK LOOOL
Ive just stumbled across your monster hunter content and I'm so happy we've got a video about my favorite boy Steve! Great to hear that you became a fan once you got to fight him too!
Now one of my top favourites!
He's back boys.
Your videos make me like some monsters more than I did before, and makes me like monsters I never fought before
I would love to see you tackle D&D monsters. AJ Pickett has a channel about D&D monster ecology and consults the various sources and iterations of the monster.
Actually surprising that he's the least favorite flagship
That thing looks sick
Thank you! Very glad you enjoy it. And your English is fine!
Oh you know Roanoke Gaming? 11/10 channel now
I’m surprised you never mentioned the one quest description in 4U that mentions a Seregios attempting to court a Rathian or that it seems to have seven fingers (three on the “hand” and four wing fingers)
Velocidrome also having seven fingers on its hands leads me to think they’re somewhat related but that’s just a wild guess
great video, Sunbreak has proven Seregios is a capable killer and can kill a Rathian and is mobility gives it an advantage against slower Wyverns
Watching this for the first time after Seregios returning in Sunbreak
Well my friend, Seregios is back in sunbreak
Was literally just thinking how interesting a collaboration with Roanoke would be when he got mentioned. Fingers crossed
He's back!!!!
You’re amazing! Really helping to reignite my love of biology after my degree burned me out
Excited to see him in sunbreak! I love both him and gore magala. Mh4u was just the best (also my first monster hunter game, I'm not biased... ) ;)
good job at nailing the prediction
serigos also have the mouth spike rathian has they may have a common ancestor with rathian or it could have convergently evolve. i really like seregios especially his weapons gimmick

I just finished a video from Roanoke, and then i see this and it stark with the feet again, loved the mention
Great hornd owls are scary I've seen one rip the head of a roosting full grown turkey. They are scary strong
Yikes - they're impressive birds!
“Seregios is the least favorite Flagship”
HOW?????
Hell if I know!
Confirmed for sunbreak!
Ah starting with the feet aye? Roanoke would be proud
I'm probably the only person who loves all the monster huter monsters and is waiting for them to make a game with every monster from prior games allong with only a couple new ones as you go around the planet hunting everyhting that moves.
I've been loving this series
Come to think of it, could you do a video about the world map of Monster Hunter?
These are so cool. Shame about the lack of views
Any views count by my standards!
I like to imagine after the events of 4U, the guild posted less quests to hunt seregios to allow the population to regrow
6:29
"What was that?"
...
"Must have been the wind."
Seregios gives me big chicken vibes with the way it takes flight and the emphasis on kicks and stomps. Secretary bird does make sense though.
9:16
IIRC Barioth and Nargacuga don't lay eggs but I don't really remember where that's from
Barioth I think likely has live young and it seems reasonable to assume Narg does too. You may be thinking of one of the monster life booklets on Barioth which is where the image comes from?
i always think it's such a missed opportunity to not make seregios a bird wyvern, we have an abundance of flagship flying wyverns already
Just wanted to add that their is a special species of seregios known as demon seregios in monster hunter explore.
My geuss for the horn is to aid in hunting prey larger then itself latching on amd sliceong away with its horn
Another idea could be that it is used to help tear open a monster's nest to easily get to the chicks
Now I am imagining minecraft steve with an elytra and a netherite sword and decided that the ender dragon wasn't enough.
Holy shit did this video age like fine wine.
I want Seregios in SUNBREAK DLC
Only if fully updated and he doesn't get the Magnamalo / Flying anything turf war
@@unnaturalhistorychannel I really do hope they would update Magnamalo's turf wars, I was disappointed with Bazelguese and Teostra turf war with him. :(
u got it sere is back
Seregios looks quite interesting, I'm actually hoping for their return in 6th Gen (Wilds)
lol came back for a rewatch still one of my fav wyverns
Best flagship?
Interesting you didn't mention where Seregios may come from. In 4U it was briefly mentioned that it apparently came from a completely different land and were fleeing from the Apex one. It was a alien species to the biomes/maps we knew of at the time. Unless this was poor localisation.
They mention that is comes from a specific place but then don't really say what said place is or what's its like, which always left me wondering if they were originally going to build to something more but later scrapped it.
@@unnaturalhistorychannel When they first announced MHW I originally thought it might be from there but it seems that isn't the case.
@@nuke2099 Yeah, and with him likely not returning for a while I'm unsure we'll ever be told.
@@nuke2099 it's always possible that Seregios might've been from the new world at some point (perhaps some area of it that World didn't explore), I've seen theories of Seregios perhaps being closely related to Bazelguese (they bear a passing resemblance and both primarily seem to attack using detachable scales), Bazelguese seems to be a fairly common sight in the new world while being quite rare (though present) in the Old World. it's entirely possible that Seregios might be found in the dunes of the New World but we simply never got quests to hunt them since they aren't really an issue when they're not invading other areas of the world.
in sunbeam it says he can kill rathian
Does 4 really have a better story then Generstions or World or Rise? Personally I don't know 4s story because I just cant play a monster hunter game on a 3ds or smaller screen.
3U, Gen XXU Switch, World Ps4, and Rise Switch are the only ones I've played
Plus Stories on 3ds and Stories 2
Is their a relation in behavior between seregios(Mh4u)and Astalos (MhGu). Both wyverns look very much alike and are both extremely territorial.
I hope he returns in wilds. Espinos too
Can you now boltreaver astalos
Kind of sad that Seregios got so dunked on in Sunbreak even though it was supposed to be its grand return. Its weapons lost their gimmick, and purely raw weapons kind of suck compared to elemental and status weapons. They didn't even give it a subspecies or variant!
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOO
Am I the only one who thinks Seregios looks like a hybrid of Rodan and Anguirus?
I don't mind him as a monster
It's just the fact in 4U EVERYONE WANTED TO DO THE STUPID SONIC CAT OUTFIT QUEST
I can only listen to spin dash sound effect for so long.
I'm not an expert of aerodynamics, so what I say could be the largest piece of crap ever, but could the horn be a way to quickly change directions while in the air, like a plane's flaps?
Bezle and Seregi are pinecones but Seregio is spikey
