    Fantastic ! The overture of ICE engines. Back in the 60's I always tuned my Villiers engines so I could get to 70 ( ish ).

    Just found this channel. These guys are going to be fun to watch. Its like a combination of one guy where everything has to be done properly and by the book and the other guy where its she'll be right rough enough is good enough. Those two together always ends up entertaining, either that or one kills the other haha.

    Now that I’ve watched to the end and am very impressed with all the work and I know why. Not because they said can’t be done but because you need more control and pressures that can’t be developed with a Detroit pump. Lots and lots of brainstorming. I think I’d have been over by the single polishing pieces and quietly satisfying myself. 60’s and Allison’s were my main experience. Since a child though I watched those 2 stroke techs build these top to bottom. 53 to 149.. even saw a 6/110 being built. I was allowed to dabble in them when the shop was quiet and it was pure joy and fascination to watch them. The group had all worked together since the mid 70’s. 3 of them back to 66 at the same Harper shop. A few still had the passion you show but all were the best. RIP to some including my brother. Cheers!

    Good video, I like all the real problems being diagnosed and resolved. A real as it happens video, not the usual YT videos of peoples fitting all new stuff designed to fit the engine in question. This is how it happens in R&D in real life. I await the next instalment as I know you guys will resolve this. All the best

Working for Cat I really liked the idea of common rail when it came out and love seeing someone work with it in a custom setup like this. Looking forward for your following videos. Awesome project, coming from a Detroit lover, and guy who's no fan of common rail systems. Seen too many failures to want it in a daily driver work truck, but they are absolutely the answer to making more power going forward. You can buy a 500 hp/1200 lb ft factory Powerstroke now. It'll be cool to see what y'all can work this one up to in the future. Subscribed.

      I got an 8v92 2 stroke silver turbo. I fill and run BRP-XD-100 etec 2 stroke oil 6 gallons. I let’s some off the side with a mixing valve I plumbed in to dripped in the fuel inlet line. Tge built in gear VRO pump feeds it and I just add more. I might give E-85 a try next but she’s running cooler, cleaner and quieter on the synthetic 2 stroke oil I get from wall mart. Detroits and emd 2 stroke run on very hard 4340 chrome moly steel cranks and anti friction bearings

  • @theq4602
    @theq4602 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'm glad someone decided to do this and actually post some detailed information on it
    the last time someone put common rail on a detroit it was some european truck pulling team with a 12v92, they posted a few videos, next to no detailed information and gave up because they kept bending crankshafts Thanks so much jason
    His solution to the rapid injection rate is kind of clever, I knew that getting a Detroit to high rpm would be hard due to the need for twice as many injection events as a four stroke diesel, but I never imagined you would need two ECMs to do it. Also didnt think a d max injector could work and was expecting some off the wall custom injector to need to be built for this sort of conversion
    one last thing, jason should really put a big fat intercooled whipple on his 8v92, esp if hes running it at 4k rpm, roots blowers have lousy efficiency at high rpm, we are talking a 50% efficiency difference between a whipple and roots here, its probably killing his HP potential
    th-cam.com/video/rJ6TGS0Edm8/w-d-xo.html

    • @jasondouglas3977
      @jasondouglas3977 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The blower is just a big HP drag and heat pump. The current setup on the truck bypasses the blower under high boost. I think the reason they didn't have success with the v12 was the application. They were limited on rpm and needed to make big power down low which these engines don't do well. Also the way their sled pull trucks are set up, they use those monster V tread tires so at the end of the track when the sled drags it down, they don't really spin. You can hear in the video it is getting bogged down at full fuel/boost probably in the neighborhood of 2500 rpm or less. In the class of racing I participate in, there is no rpm limit so I'm hoping we will have more success. I fully expect to end up bending the rods at some point, but I think there is still some potential left in the engine over and above the current fuel level with mechanical injectors.

    • @Moose_338
      @Moose_338 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The blower is there to just help with scavenging at lower temps and rpm on a two stroke diesel

    • @joseantoniocastrellonjr2568
      @joseantoniocastrellonjr2568 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bower is not super charging. It's turning only fast enough to help the engine breathe at low rpm. The turbo is what stacks boost.

    • @theq4602
      @theq4602 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Moose_338 yes, but at high rpm it introduces losses and inefficiencies regardless if it provides boost or not
      and besides, you dont want boost pressure, you want manifold air density
      you can have air at 60PSI going into your engine but if it is really hot you dont really have much air molocuels in a given space then normal pressure ait at a lower temperature, this is why intercooling is important
      The air density is important, a roots blower, regardless if you have a bypass for it or not, will introduce a lot of heat and thus low density air, into your engines intake manifold. So you may as well do it right, use a screw type supercharger with an aftercooler for high manifold air density which at idle will give you better scavenging that consumes less fuel per unit of air moved

    • @TheCrustyFatCab
      @TheCrustyFatCab ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@theq4602 The truck engine has twin full bypasses that go directly into the airbox, additionally, I've fitted it with twin water/air ICs with an ice water tank. The blower is still there as it needs it to start, but after 20 psi or so its not really doing much other than freewheeling, and airbox/turbo boost pressure is equalized.

    Take an 8V92 and source the common rail fuel gear and ECU from a marine MAN or MTU engine and graft it to the Detroit. Marine engines similar in capacity to the 8V92 are already specd at approx 800-1200hp so could give even more scope for bigger hp gains.

    Very unique build. I normally don't care for electronic diesels, but this is cool. I'm curious the power potential difference over the mechanical system. Especially with the ability to freely adjust timing and fuel on the fly, without having to worry about the governor defueling at high rpm. With this, you even have the potential to add an injector and pilot flame to the exhaust manifolds and program in an anti lag system.

      These injectors will flow more than 2x the fuel of the current mechanical injectors, so theoretically we should be able to make 2x the power. That's not to say the engine will handle that kind of power, but I think there is certainly room to go before rods give out.

    This is going to be interesting. Is it DDEC based?
    I've been interested in updating and "modernizing" the late 8V92, with higher speed blowers, blower bypasses, external air to air intercoolers, and modern turbochargers (including variable geometry/variable vane), or twin, smaller but more efficient turbochargers (mounted to the manifolds because exhaust heat = efficiency in turbochargers).
    I'd like to see what kind of power and efficiency can be gotten from one of the old engines. There are advances in camshafts, valves, etc. Not to mention what can be achieved with modern pistons, piston rings, and materials in cylinder sleeves. The extreme cast iron, or compacted graphite would make great cylinders, along with coatings, and the new modern hone techniques, with diamond and CBN abrasives. The new titanium nitride coated steel rings are amazing. And the new piston forgings and machining.
    An 8V92 TAB with 19:1 compression, trick turbochargers and internals, and a good aftermarket air to air intercooler, with common rail, and/or DDEC IV control should make an easy 750HP, with big torque numbers, 1850 ft/lb or better, at 1400 RPM, or maybe as low as 1250..

      I'd be most interested to see how a smaller version of EMD's gear driven turbocharger would do on Detroits, it's worked out very well on their large locomotive, marine and stationary engines for decades. If you're not familiar with this design the turbo is connected to the engine's geartrain with an overrunning clutch, which keeps the turbo spinning fast enough to force air into the engine at idle or low throttle settings while also allowing exhaust pressure to take over at high throttle. The clutch disengages once there is enough exhaust to get the turbo spinning faster than the geartrain.

      ditch the roots blower while you're at it and get a screw type, banks performance did a video on why roots blowers at high rpm add alot of heat to the intake air and kill manifold air density, while a whipple supercharger is more efficient at higher rpm

      @@bobsmith2637 centrifugal superchargers have lag off idle, you have the worst of both worlds
      centrifugal supers are great for tuned at rpm performance, but along a wide powerband they leave much to be desired due to how compressor maps work

    that is awesome, might need to consider upgrading the ex valve springs to stop the high rpm valve float which it what eventually makes the rpms stop climbing :)
