Boy did they get Thriller wrong! It was INTENDED to be a parody of the old-style Universal horror movies, and I thought it was fantastic. You can't condemn the video for being what it is, guys!

SILKWOOD is flawless! Such display of character and precise acting! Shocked it didn't get much Oscar attention, that's as good as Streep has ever been without a foreign accent.
True story. When I was seven, I went to a friend's birthday party where the Highlight was gathering everyone around to pop in a videocassette of Thriller. While Siskel and Ebert have reasonable criticisms in terms of how derivative the work is Michael Jackson's and John Landis's earlier work, it's still just great fun and less reminiscent of earlier horror movies than it is of the experience of staying up late at night to watch a Creature Feature with a good host introducing the work.
I remember watching this episode like it was yesterday . I was 4yrs old and was excited to watch Christine in the theater. I saw this film with D.C Cab double feature in west L.A
I’m no fan of Michael Jackson the person, and the things he was accused of. However, “Thriller” is a great short film. I was 13 when the video premiered, and it was the scariest thing I’d seen since the Salem’s Lot TV movie. Exceptionally well done.

Silkwood is not normally the kind of movie I like but it was haunting and so well acted. Thumbs up for Cher ; lesbians do that hands in the pocket walk as she did in that scene !
I'm still kinda wondering why Keith Gordon didn't really do much more. He was a good/likeable actor. I think I only saw him in one other movie, playing Rodney Dangerfield's son in "Back to school." I don't remember seeing him, ever again after that.
Directed A Midnight Clear, a film which deserves more attention. He did create some intriguing sympathetic characters-Dressed to Kill is his best work, he and Nancy Allen have some great scenes together. I even liked him in the mediocre Legend of Bille Jean!
Cher and Meryl Streep were truly amazing in Silkwood - they “spark” together in a beautiful and powerful way - I totally believe their friendship and personal history.
Honestly I have always found it eerie AF that Stephen King had a fear of cars and trucks, and he was nearly killed by a car in that horrible accident when he was out walking and the driver didn’t see him until it was too late. Yikes.
a Disco is just a generis term for a dance club. used by a lot of people well after Disco "the music" went out of style. really its no different to me than in the 90s when i would hear people call music on the top 40 radio station "Alternative music" . or when people 10 years ago would say they like Indie bands, but they are talking about a bunch of bands that are signed to major labels or just small labels that are really just subsidiaries of major labels.
It's wild to me that Siskel & Ebert could love a mediocre John Carpenter movie like _Christine_ and hate or give a marginal thumbs down to masterpieces like _The Thing_ and _Escape From New York_ . Carpenter deserves props for taking an assignment like this or _Starman_ and delivering what audiences and critics wanted but none of those pictures have really stood the test of time, in my opinion.
I see Escape From New York as a solid entertainment. Not brilliant but hardly bad. The Thing however is a brilliant combo of horror and a paranoia thriller with a pitch perfect conclusion. Gene Siskel enjoyed both but Roger gave thumbs down to both of them.
Sudden Impact is underrated; my favourite Eastwood flick in that decade. Thriller is the best music video ever made. These guys know their movies, not their music videos
@@linkbiff1054 Sudden Impact. Up until last year, I had only seen Dirty Harry, and my dad loved the series, so I bought the box set on the cheap and watched them all in order. They got progressively worse. None of them came close to Dirty Harry. As for Siskel saying the first one had no humour, he had a terrible memory, because I remember several funny moments in Dirty Harry, such as the first time he talks to the mayor, the first time he meets his new partner, the way he talks to fatso, and the moment he meets the gay guy.

As I remember it, there was originally a disclaimer at the beginning of the video saying that Micheal Jackson didn't believe in the occult. That might be the controversy they're talking about.

Dirty Harry removed from urban environment and taken to a small town setting and recalls the visuals of vintage noir. Sondra Locke killed it as the female Paul Kersey avenging herself upon low level sleaze bags. The construction of the film needed tightening but it's still one of the best DH films, right below the first film.
I really liked the first half....but not a great climax...they talk about Sandra Locke being the villain but she really isn`t the main villain in the movie

@@JoeyArmstrong2800 The problem with lettering her go was it wasn't made out to be a big deal. Had they built up to that moment properly, it would have been a great conclusion to the series. I think the way it could have worked is Harry stealing the revolver and then, in a final scene, we see him throwing it into the river. That would have drove home the point that it wasn't about saving the love interest, it was Harry giving up on law for good.
I will give Siskel this: I think the film, and book, would have better it Buffalo Bill was a tragic character. Francis Dollarhyde in Red Dragon was a pitch perfect character because he was complex.

I'd say they both gave "Christine" a marginal thumbs up. They both pretty much said it was silly, but "it worked for them".

Not really. As a music video it is one of the classic eighties event music video but they are judging as a short which is a total different beast.
