    what a great how too..
    after i had my hard attack which i quit smoking that night in 2015.. i was looking for another hobby.
    i took up painting on saw blades. then got board so i found some algirian brier wood. it was beautyful
    my wife ordered it for me. and when it came in it was even more than expected. $25.00 bucks it scared the hell out of me. i did not want to ruin such a nice brier.. i went and joined a pipe making area on u
    tube and studied what everyone else was doing..and drew out several pics on paper. thay were like everyone else's...not for me. i wanted the wood to talk and show me what was needed..a month later i started cutting the wood.and it did do what i wanted weard shape pipes 3 to be exact.. they came out great and still have them. i wish i had away to take pic's.i would post them... sometimes it pay's to sit and stair at a project no matter how long it takes it will tell you what it needs...to be happy...later lee

    What a beautiful piece of art. Watching you burn out the pith in the sapling was really useful for me. I would drill a hole in a straight piece of wood and steam and bend it. I might not yet use stone, but i will definitely carve some nice pipe heads now that I have some extra time you helped save on the stem, might even carve and decorate the whole pipe more. It was nice to watch you work, thank you.

      Hey Old School Alaska, you would probably like messing around with it. It’s very fine grained and usually soft to carve though sometimes you can end up with a hard piece which is a bear to work. Crazy Crow sells pipe blanks that might be fun to test the waters with.

    I just stumbled on this video and thoroughly enjoyed watching and will probably watch more, time allowing. I live in Alaska and have known many carvers, too many have passed from Mesotheleoma / Asbestosis, etc. pick a name. I didn't see a mask and I'd hate to meet another talented carver only to loose him too soon. I was a pretty close friend of Leonard Savage to name one.

    • @StockmanOriginal
      @StockmanOriginal  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Jerry, l’m so happy you have found our channel and l hope you check out some more of our videos. Thank you for your concerns, l started out carving up in Alaska and saw some carvers working in some pretty scary conditions, probably dead by now. I allow very limited exposure to dust and do most of my work in a vacuum box. Pipestone dust is quite heavy and when cut by hand tools it falls fast and doesn’t hang in the air. All power work is done in the box. Once again, thank you.

      Thanks, zestypanda! We have TH-cam memberships enabled -there should be a “Join” button below the video and above the comments. We also have stockmanoriginal.substack.com. Substack takes takes a significantly smaller transaction fee then TH-cam, so from our perspective it’s preferable. Thanks for your support.

    Greetings from Alaska, new subscriber here. I saw this piece of art on the Hobbiton Piper's channel (Kevin). You are a very talented artist! The stem, bowl, tamper and even the wooden box are all so great. I look forward to seeing more of your videos.

    Do you have a different set of chisels/knives/bits/tools/whatever for working on that pipe-stone, or does it not hurt the tool's you'd use for wood much?

    • @StockmanOriginal
      @StockmanOriginal  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello Elliot, thanks for checking out our channel. I do have tools that I save just for stone. Pipestone is quite soft but still dulls my tools, l just sharpen more frequently but I can’t bring myself to use my finer tools on it. My stone tools have a more obtuse angle than even my ivory tools let alone my wood carving tools.

      Hello and welcome aboard, the stone is called pipestone and it comes from Minnesota USA

    • @endlosz

      @@StockmanOriginal Thanks, I'm from Central Europe, what do you think they call this type of rock in international or Latin language? As far as I know, there are few stones that can only be found in one part of the world. I was looking for meerschaum stone anno, but I only found it on the Asia Minor peninsula, in Turkey, it is not possible to get it from there, at least so far I have not found a way or an opportunity. I hope there is no law against it, because then I will be trying unnecessarily. For now, I make pipe heads from clay and hardwood, but stone is easier to carve, I prefer it. Let's say it has so many disadvantages that it overheats very quickly, but let's say it's fine in winter at minus degrees.

      @@StockmanOriginal Do you know the history of pipe smoking? Where was it first in the Asia Minor peninsula or with the Indians? When did you start smoking tobacco leaves? What did they smoke before? Are there any credible scientific sources on this that are based on findings and not assumptions?
