1. Love the enthusiasm and passion of these people. It's kind of like the way I feel about baking.
2. Laughed at the shot where the elastic thingie of the mask snapped - that was such a "lucky" shot for the cameraperson.
3. It was only when they showed his face that I realized Nick Offerman is ACTUALLY into woodworking, not just his character in Parks&Rec.
A rollercoaster guys, a rollercoaster.
My dad is a woodworker and he encouraged me into the handcrafted life that I live now. So cool that you guys did a video on this! Makes me all warm and fuzzy on the inside.
My husband and I, both young woodworkers, have recently opened our own combination retail store and workshop. It is so much fun to do what you love, even if you have to been pretty dang poor for a few years. I shared this video on our facebook page because I feel that it really captures why we love what we do and concisely clears up the common misconception that woodworking is the same as carpentry.
As the only girl in my high school woodworking class, I was ecstatic to see this video & to see so many women in it! Girl power!
This video makes me smile as I type a desk that I made by hand.
There is nothing like taking junk wood or wood from disguised furniture and making something new. Breathing new life and beautify into someones trash! I love wood working. Even though I only have a few tools that are not made for the job they still work.
The Subcultures videos are definitely my favorite.
So glad a new Subcultures is out. Probably my favourite series on SP.
Nick & Company, first of all, you have my total undivided attention! The wisdom you impart is equaled only by the vintage tools in your shop! It is a STEAMPUNK movie set! Keep bringing us a new fresh outlook on craft😅
The world needs to encourage more productive creativity like this.
The quality of their work is incredible!
I love the way she talks about her material- it inspires me (though maybe not to carve wood) but simply as an artist!
Such beautiful art. Love seeing people who absolutely love what they do for a living.
Really great job describing our mentality.
I have three daughters. One loves my shop because her guy friends love to hang out there. The other two love "working" out there with me, banging nails into scraps and holding things for me while I'm gluing up. They all have a long list of things for me to make for them, with no regard to the slow pace at which I work. The shop is my best tool for bonding with the kids, and I fully expect to hand down my tools to at least one of my girls.
That was realy cool to see my own profession presented in such beatiful way. As a german carpenter you see the carpenters in the US on TV only on construction side an with the raw wood shooting it together with a nailgunn and thats something thats so differend to the work here. To see that's there a diffirentiation between woodworkers and carpenters is realy interesting to see, and it's answering a lot of questions i've always had.
To see that almost hurts because i'm not longer able to work with wood due to an allergy.
And to everyone in the comments i read about the problems with starting woodworking should consider: here in germany you get a training over 3 years. You working the hole week in a workshop to get al the basics, and on one day of the week you go to a vocational school and learn all the theoretical stuff and working safety. You have to do two exams, one after about 1,5 year where you have to
do an theoretical test and build a pice in the workshop at school. At the end you have to do a final exam whit a theoretical part with several test of diverent topics and a you have to design and plan
and build a furniture piece whit a specified minimum complexity and time (two weeks). If you passed al this exames you are allowed to call yourself a carpenter and get work as a carpenter. You get a
journeyman certificatthat identifies you like a follow guild member.
So with that in mind there is a figure of speech here in germany i will try to translate: "There is never been a master fallen out of the sky" i hope it make sense.
Means you have to work an learn from the mistakes you will definitively do.
So have fun because wood is awesome to work with.
I love these subculture videos, to find out about a whole new community that us heard of but never really explored in great detail. The creativity that these people possess is just amazing
That's a great lesson to learn from your Dad! Always thought it would be really cool to be able to do all that on your own!
Aw, thanks Hannah! That's so cool to hear!
My first impression from the title was eh, then I decided to see what this was all about. This was a treat. It was. I have more respect and appreciation for what goes into woodworking, and it's just so much cooler to me as a whole, not just the process but history and kinship behind it too.
Every Soul Pancake video makes me love life even more!
GOSH THESE SEGMENTS ARE SO AWESOME. I LOVE YOU SOULPANCAKE
Been a woodworker for over 40 years and this just pulls at me in a way beyond description it is just so wonderful to know that these old tools will not gather rust after I am gone.
Awesome video aside; Sub Culture's are a great topic for a series!! You guys and gals at SoulPancake never cease to impress me. Every video is uplifting; keep it up!!
Thank you soulpancake!! You inspire me to go outside and do something. Be back later tonight and watch your other videos.
Yay! Happy Saturday to you!
That's great! Yours too?! High-fives for woodworkin' Dads showing us the ropes!
I loved this video -- what a wonderful place to work, wonderful people, and gorgeous workworking! My husband and I have made much of our furniture and even though we're totally part-time amateurs, we love making things together.
whoever shot and edited this did a beautiful job!
What a beautiful video, really captures the beauty and natural parts of woodworking. I teach high school woodshop and students today seem more passionate about woodworking then ever before.
I have a desk JUST like the one they showed at the end! I was thinking about throwing it out and getting a new one, but it has always been my desk since I was little... This inspired me to get some maintenance done on it! I hope to be successful enough one day to be able to start a hobby like this one and experience what they feel!
Totally awesome! My father and grandfather were both carpenters. I'm just a hack musician but I love making things of wood.
I wish they would make the subcultures videos in greater quantity because they are honestly my favorite videos on TH-cam.
Lee has a great line in here where she says, "I'm drawn to woodworking... there's a story in wood." While putting together my own small wood shop, I've come to also believe that's my biggest draw too. You can begin with a tree and create something for someone else that is completely unique and can never be truly replicated. If you're interested in the slightest in this idea; take a pocket knife, and find a tree branch. Make a small spoon with a recipient in mind, might change your outlook.
I was thinking about the character Ron Swanson in the back of my mind while watching this, and when they mentioned Nick Offerman...*mind blowing to pieces*
Subcultures is easily one of my favorite things on TH-cam. Great job guys and thanks for putting so much work into these. They are inspiring on a whole other level.
AH! I love the subcultures thing. It's so cool to see such passionate people.
i really love these vids that focus are artists and crafters and makers!
oh wow! would love to see a time lapse woodworker!
These subcultures videos make me want to do more in life
i always laugh at every clip ending of soulpancake's videos, because you get so engross into the video like in an emotional trance and then at the end it's says 'SOUL PANCAKE SUBSCRIBE' with this opera voice and then you wake up and laught xD
That's actually quite amazing. Yes things in nature are always better but we live in a society that uses this stuff, and if it's made here in Cali, produced cleanly and by good a good company, I can hardly imagine a better product or better job.
You can tell that they're doing the job because they love it and not because of the paycheck. That's what I want.
I love these Subculture videos!!! Do More!!!
I made a shelf with coat hooks and a wood clock. I had to do sketches for them. It was so fun.
whoa, this is amazing! if you do resistant materials at school, this is something you could really get in to :)
That's awesome! Yeah, these folks have some really amazing 'hobbies!' : )
The Subcultures videos make me realize I should probably get a hobby
you could check around for a studio near your town. there are often classes or studio times set aside for new folks to learn
This is such an amazing video. I'd love to see more.
That was awesome, thanks for sharing their story.
I looove the subcultures videos. It's so beautiful to see people's passions.
Thanks for,a fun look at a beautiful craft! I love making things with wood around my home, as well.
Way to go, Soulpancake. I hope this sparks a lot of interest in doing what career you desire despite your sexual type in what according to society is a "suitable" or not. Awesome vid!
I'm teared up. Wonderful.
Wow, I never really knew this was such a deep community... That's really cool :D
I seem to come back to this video at least once a month. Very few things move this guy but this one does very deep down.
Hey, same here
My dad is a woodworker. He made me learn how to make tables, chairs, and pens. If I ever need to fix anything, I'll know how to fix it.
This is just beautiful.
It is tough to start up a woodworking project. I had created wasted a lot time & cash on my previous projects. Then I learned the reason, that's I did not have a detailed plan & diagram. I always let things worse when it could be solved simply if I had some experience. Then I found a wood working program which contains all of the specific diagram, ideas & guides - it help me lots.
You also can obtain it at the link below, I sure it will save you a lot of money and time

This was incredibly inspiring. Thank you for making this video.
You guys should do a video on icecream truck drivers. I bet there's a lot of interesting stories especially in a big city
This is so incredible.
Love it!! I feel that there's a part of a person's soul that goes into a wonderfully made hand crafted thing. :)
That's so cool! I always thought woodworkers had at least one of their thumbs missing.
I love these videos!
Do more of the flip side please:) those are my most favorite videos on TH-cam. They are so inspirational and axing lay made. Please more:)
phenomenal! their work is stunning! I want to just hang out there and watch them work all day and maybe try a hand at it :-)
Oh I love wood, I had to take a basic carpentry class and I loved using those machines and working with wood and creating something useful out of a piece of plank.
On the other hand, I feel guilty for all those very needed dead trees that are now a new desk or something...
Great episode!
I second that Xavier :0)
Soulpancake you never fail to make me go, Wow!!
always so motivational!
I live in Japan and have no tools, but my wife and I need a breakfast bar/counter/somewhere to put stuff in the kitchen of our humble, 3-room apartment. I've been considering making one myself, but don't know where to start. It'd be great to have a place like this to tackle my counter project. If I were back in the States, I could go to my uncle's wood shop. But, that's not the case. Time to start looking. :) Thank you for this video.
More subculture videos in the artworld please!
So inspiring!
I was so into it, that I forgot that I was watching soul pancake on youtube x3
Beautiful video! They are so passionate :)
wow really thank you for this video! :)

I whittle and I love it, I hope thats close enough
It's funny how nick offerman is a wood worker in real life and he plays one on parks and rec.
Great video. I loved it!

beautiful pieces. one day I shall be able to afford them.
Isn't it funny how sometimes watching things makes your brain think you're smelling it too? I got the biggest whiff of wood for no reason watching this! Silly brain!
Ps. I love you guys & your channel. :)
Interesting. I always wanted to learn woodworking.
Hehe! Ron. Keep calm and Chive on!
you guys are really cool.
Man i sure do miss woodworking :)
when I saw woodworkers in the title I just thought please be Nick Offerman and it WAS!
"Sold me a log full of termites and salamanders" lolol
Hey guys! you should add some extra information for those who may be interested in doing all the things from the Subcultures series.
Wow!
Good job
Found my way here after developing a strong hetero-man-crush on Nick Offerman. What an excellent role model!
Been doing wood for 30+ years, it is a dying art, no cnc`s in our shop, old school....our favorite line, "math is hard" !!!
It's about taking something raw and making it into something tangible. Like cooking, only with wood.
i like to eat wood.
yes, i second this!
do you hand build, or throw?
5:55 soo cute
