I cosplay in NZ and have never heard a derogatory term used for people not in costume. Cosplay and cons are ment to be inclusive. Its total bull shit to label someone as mundane just because they are not in costume. everyone is there to have fun.

I dont get why people think cosplay is so werid... I never did it, but a friend of mine likes it a lot. I think that being alive is about an exploation of love, love for others, love for yourself, love for nature, creativity, science, ...love for life. This people really LOVE the universe somebody's imagination built, it's still really loving something special (our ability of creation) and that is always good! have a nice day guys :)

Has anyone else noticed that at conventions there is always a person dressed as deadpool.

Deadpool is always a popular cosplay, its everywhere. I don't hate it, as long as the person is chill and gets into character very well while also being polite and respectful.

I don't mind it, but sometimes the people cosplaying Deadpool can be annoying assholes.

Star Wars is big at conventions too, your never going to go to one and not see someone dressed as a Stormtrooper or Darth Vader.

Great vid, I'm 51 and I think that women in geekdom is the best thing that ever happened. They have brought their talent, skill, imagination and shared love for the art and story of comics, animatiom and film to the community. Rock on ladies, sorry we took so long to have you.

Mundane? I call them tourists, for each Con is like a kingdom!
Like kingdoms, a Con rise and fall, this factor no point denying!
Merchants and artists in rooms and halls; trading, selling, and buying.
At last, there are the citizens and tourists of all shapes and sizes.
While the citizens pay homage, while the tourists enjoy surprises.

There's an irony in how these people talk about being accepted and being a part of something and wanting to feel awesome etc and yet their community has a (within the community, likely derogatory) term for those who don't cosplay....

    • @milkflavored

+Damien Fletcher I was just going to say this. I would love to cosplay but it's an expense that I currently can not afford. There are POC who feel uncomfortable cosplaying characters outside their race. People have their reasons for not cosplaying just like cosplayers have their reasons for doing it. But it feels like another form of gatekeeping using "mundane" to refer to everyone else.

I believe they wanted to show, that even these professionals (your words, I'm not familiar with any cosplay celebs) came from a place where they were bullied for being a nerd, for liking different stuff. And I actually really like how that conveys that you will always be looked up at if you do what you are passionate about if you find the right people. You don't have to find the right identity to fit into your surrounding, you have to find the right surrounding to fit in with your identity.

I'm not very familiar with cosplay, and I don't know if what I do counts as it. But I am a big fan of the steampunk subculture, and have a steampunk outfit or two that I wear every once in a while. Steampunk costumes are very elaborate, and can be very expensive as well. I started out buying a single vest and a pair of goggles. Over the next year and a half I would acquire something new every month or so to add to the costume. It was a very gradual process, but now I have something I'm proud of.

I think what they mean by "being themselves" has less to do with the fact that they're dressing up as someone else and more to with the reason WHY they dress up; their love for the character, game, anime, movie, etc. It's about expressing how they FEEL about the character, not wanting to BE the character.
And cosplay means something different to everyone! For some it's literally costume play, for others it's about receiving attention, others still do it for the craft, et cetera and so forth.

I don't like the way this was worded but I agree with the sentiment. SPC chose to shoot this only interviewing celebrities of cosplay. It would be like if I wanted to introduce viewers into the skateboarding subculture and only filmed Tony Hawk and Bob Burnquist. It would have been way more interesting if they actually went to a con and talked with your casual hobbyist cosplayers in addition to the professionals.
