    I like all you talked about what you needed to start with . I’m thinking about getting a bearded dragon an adult . Years ago I had a Chinese Water Dragon . He was so great grew fast and loved for me to hold him . He was 36 “ long and we lost power because of snow storm . No matter how hard I tried to keep him and my Herman Tortoise warm. They both ended up dead . My Herman Tortoise was 2 years old she was so sweet . She would come to me when I called her name . I had play time with her 3 - 5 times a day . One of the games she like was jump over the chop stick ,lol. I’d put her at one end of her floor blanket . Tell her to go jump the stick . It was about 24 “ from her in a straight line. I’d let her go .Every time she’d go straight to and jump , yeah ! I miss them both so much . Thanks for the video

    Lynne Bass.... For some reason TH-cam isn't letting me reply directly to your message. No, dragons like to be left alone. You never want to keep two males or a male and female together. You can keep two females of the same size together IF they get along which isn't always the case. Best to house them alone.

      You really shouldn't need one Ryan unless the overnight temps in your home dip below 68F. Ceramic heat emitters work really well. Screw them into a deep dome lamp with ceramic base. CAUTION!!! Make sure your lamp is very secure. This goes for any heat source used for beardies. I am always concerned about fire hazards.

    my biggest problem with sand is that there is always a risk of impaction that you don't have to deal with and sand absorbs the moisture of their waste including the bacteria. So if you scoop feces you still leave the stink which he has to sit in a closed hot room breathing in...seems kinda mean to do that to an animal you love. Why risk health issues just because you want to make it decorative....you don't have to live in it and breath that in, they do

    • @Hex0rcist
      @Hex0rcist 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      and bedding changes will help the smell but it's so heavy and with a carpet you just rinse and clean in the dishwasher and let it sit out. You can have a second carpet to replace the dirty one while it cleans and have a nice healthy rotation. With sand bedding changes it gets expensive over time and with it being so much more work you are likely to skip it once or twice leading to the before post smell issue

    • @AquaticGhoul
      @AquaticGhoul 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      at the same time would you want to have someone put you in an environment you are not used to or designed to live in just because they don't think your smart enough to not eat mouthfuls of you carpet

    • @Hex0rcist
      @Hex0rcist 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jacob Barlow dragons don't suffer medically from it. so of course I would use carpet. your argument is silly and not really valid. If you are hell bent on avoiding the carpet then at least use ceramic tile since you know....Australia doesn't have Sandy deserts.

    • @Pogonavision
      @Pogonavision  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nicholas Hall I know a very well known reptile vet that keeps, and recommends keeping, bearded dragons on vermiculite. Properly cared for animals in captivity are not always kept the exact way they would be found in the wild. After all, many are captive born and most do not even behave as they would in the wild. Many of the "thumbs down" clicks we get on this video is from people believing sand is an absolute no, no which is so wrong. Most of these folks have never studied about Pogona in their natural homeland of Australia and the diverse habitats they are found in. Sand/soil is found in many of these habitats.

    • @Hex0rcist
      @Hex0rcist 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Pogonavision they live in flat rock deserts with Some sand not all sand like a lot of people keep them on. It's confused with Sahara desert instead of rocky. then there are still health concerns with using man made sand such as calcium sand has anti acid ingredients in it which is not good for small animal stomachs. Then you include my first posts health concerns when you compare to carpet, paper, and ceramic tile. If there is a desire for digging then I recommend a sand box that way he doesn't get as much in his system as a full tank of sand. as for your "well known vet" I have had my fair share of run ins with famous vets who think you should use meal worms as a staple diet or some that say you should soak a Uromastyx. Then you have vets who sell out to science diet dog food which their RX diets are retarded expensive and contain no meds and can be bought from a pet store in another brand a d larger size with less filler crap ingredients. Vets don't know everything but they sure like to think they do.

      Hi Aspen! Great question. I have sold many dragons to families of 10 year olds that have been very successful. I have also sold to families with younger children that have done quite well with parental supervision and involvement. I have never met you but I get the feeling you would be a great dragon owner. Sand can cause impaction and choking. Another option is reptile carpet (the kind without the loops that can snag their claws!) but you'd need to buy two cuts of carpet and switch them out. You can just toss them in the washing machine really often for easier clean up. But this needs to be done more frequently because spot cleaning is not very effective with their porous material.

    The one guy said not to feed your bearded dragon meal worms. What I discovered is that if you keep the worms warm they sluff off the shell and you end up with a milky white larva before they turn to Beatles. That's what you want to give them they are very soft at that time pure protein and they love them.

      Carol Lopez; you’re correct, otherwise the exoskeleton can be a bit much. I know they are higher in fat content, and that’s why gut loaded crickets are best. I usually go with the banded crickets.

    Wow that's a perfect bearded dragon setup video. Great and best information for someone starting out in beardies! How loose substrate can cause impaction, the correct UVB lighting and how CFLs are terrible, good temperatures ranges basking and cool side, hydration with food and regular baths, enclosure sizes for a juvie/adult, vivarium decorations/climbing/hides, ect good stuff man! I subbed =]

    Thank you for the kind comments blew! I will email you too but thought that answering here may help others. Unless you have a lot of bulbs to keep up with, I do not think it is necessary for everyone to have a UVB meter. You really DO NOT have to change out UVB bulbs every 6 months. In fact, I would just recommend changing them out annually even though I have seen plenty last well beyond a year. Hope this helps.

    If it gets below 65 degrees F at night, then you will need a ceramic heating element. No light when your beardie wants to sleep. Colored lights are bad for their eyes. Just white during the day. Never use under-cage heating pads because they tend to malfunction and beardies don't sense heat from below very well.

    Love the vinyl tile idea. Home depot has some nice designs. We're actually going to be using a Mainstays TV stand to create our beardie's habitat for when he gets bigger. It's a less expensive method for a dragon cage and it has sliding front glass doors, we'll just have to modify it for the lights (it's about the equivalent of a 50 gallon tank). Definitely going to line it with the vinyl tile though :) thanks!

    lighting periods vary. during estivation, they may not come out, and light cycle can be reduced until end of estivation period, when heat and light can gradually be increased to induce breeding/laying periods.

    Mine for some odd reason never liked "closed off" cages (sides and back). She went ballistic until I moved her into an open one, where she can see us and her surroundings. She calmed down straight away and was way more relaxed. Her beautiful orangy color came back too, tho the temperatures were always spot on for a beardy. She's an odd one, I tell ya, but a very sweet odd one. She was a rescue, and who knows what she had to endure for her to NOT like closed off spaces.
    Cheers.

      You bring up a great point. All dragons are individuals and will have individual preferences for what they consider a comfortable environment. It is important to experiment with different set ups if your dragon is not settling in properly.
