If you ever get into the school, please contact me. I did my student teaching at Burton in 1975-1976. Mercyhurst had a lot of the students go to Burton for different classes. I remember my coop teacher was Vicki Corappi. She taught 4th grade. The ratio of black students then was 52%. I learned a lot because the teachers there at that time were awesome and shared a lot with us.

Went to Burton from 1953 to 1958. At that time most of us were from the Roger Young Housing Project across the street...now it's a park. The left quarter of the school (facing it) was the old part and had an 1893 date on the outside. Even then we were a bit behind the times...I learned to write with a dip pen in an inkwell that fit in the wooden desk. Good teachers and even though it wasn't modern, we learned much better than the kids today. I think the excellent reading teacher I had helped through university. Our janitor then was a man named Carl....our water fountain was a porcelain one...very old fashioned but more effective than many of today's schools.

Where you went up the stairs and saw the room with the chairs was our auditorium / cafeteria. This brings back a lot of memories. I went to that Elementary School from K - 6 grade.

I would like to say thanks for all the videos you have uploaded for us to watch especially this one because there's not a lot of pictures online of the school. you are doing amazing work. I know people will start seeing the same thing I do the love of history through your videos. I like to say please do not stop I believe one day you will make it. If there was a way to make you big overnight I will do it. What got me interested in history was the American Pickers I hope one day you can get that big I thank god we have a person like you keep up the good work now it's time for a Budweiser.

There's an old middle school in Johnstown Ohio built in 1927 that is still being used. It may be torn down when the new high school gets built. We should do a video on it together, I can tell you which window is for what teacher's classroom

My upstairs neighbors are from Erie PA and her kids used go to that school till it closed. When I sent her the video she said the neighbor was nightmare so when the school closed she moved her whole family down south to Tennessee. She said the schools enrollment got so low because of crime in the area, Rezoning of schooling , Funding of school services so alot of parents were taking their kids out of there putting else where.

It's a decent building that could repurpose for senior housing or veterans housing or even a charter school (seems to be the thing in my town now.) Great video. They are closing schools and over packing the remaining ones.
When I went to elementary school int he 70s I think the student to teacher ratio was like 19 to 25 to one. Because I was a brainiac and a smart ass they would send me and other smart asses to talented and gifted half the day so I didn't fall asleep in class. LIke a did a lot. I got bored easily.
In just a year you just keep getting better and better Wallie. It's only upward from here.

I worked at Burton a few days during the last weeks it was open
The door on the east side of the building led to a big ramp hallway
The door in the back that came out of an outcropping in the building is probably a stairwell from the boiler room but I don’t remember exactly

Burton didn't have a football field. I don't think any elementary schools in Erie have sports teams of any kind. The gravel by the side door is where the playground used to be.
The park across the street belongs to the community, and not the school. Those homes next to the park are some of the "Projects".
Burton used to be brick, and still is under the stucko. They did the stucko in the 90s. The holes in the stucko on the parking lot side are from kids. You could throw a baseball at the school to practice catching the rebound when it was brick. When they added the stucko, the next day you had those holes. Kids didn't know it would break so easily. Not saying I know who did it, but some of those holes have been there for decades.
In the back parking lot, the teachers would park at the far end so the kids could play during recess. The popular recess game there when I was a kid was called "catch Jason and take turns beating him", which was popular enough that the teachers watch watch from inside, or pretend not to watch if they were outside. It was a rough neighborhood. It looks like it still is.

The district is planning to sell this campus as of Mar 30, 2017. www.goerie.com/news/20170330/erie-school-district-ready-to-sell-former-burton-school
I wonder if they sold it yet or if it is in escrow. I heard it closed as the result of budget cuts and school boundary and grade reconfiguration.

    • @WallieB26
      @WallieB26  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That was one of the leading factors was budget cuts. When I filmed this, it was rather clean meaning the grass was cut but I didn't see anything that hinted at the idea of being repurposed or sold.

The class right Inside from where the Facebook murdered was shot by the police, was Mrs Whites class where in 1957 a new kid got demoted to our class. He was twice as big as anyone in the class. And sharpened a doz brand new pencils... before stabbing them... one at a time into my thigh! Its an evil spot... another older kid began beating me relentlessly for no reason, right on the lawn where the Facebook murdered met his maker! Evil spot!!!

I'm not familiar with the Facebook murder in Erie. Isn't the park location where the man from Cleveland ended his life? It could be the same story, I'm not really sure. The Man approached an older man in Cleveland while on Facebook....well, it was heartbreaking. He then drove to Erie.

You said they closed the schools because they don't have the money believe me I'm from Erie Pennsylvania I moved out of that hellhole in 1970 when you have a mayor that has a 7 term time in office you have the same police chief for the same time then you know that the money they do not spend because they put it in their pockets they killed so many projects wanting to come in to town because the gangsters Didn't want anybody interfering in their illegal enterprises.. They can afford to keep anything open they just won't do it. I could write a book my stepfather was a committee man we lived by 32nd in green garden whenever projects were to come in to be built or whatever whatever the job might have been everybody always had to get a cut I remember being in my parents home on a Saturday night when the mayor would show up the police chief would show up the contractors would show up all kinds of people would show up and all that happened for an hour and a 1/2 were envelopes full of cash money and I mean back in those days it was huge money Being passed out to everywho ever needed to get paid off to make something happen And you can bet your a** it hasn't changed one bit except today the money is much bigger.. I remember a 1967 litten industries wanted to come in and build ships which would have kept a city with plenty of employment for years and years to come they would have probably had to bring in people because you wouldn't have enough but they turned it down because they didn't have control of the cash flow so they felt they wouldn't make any graph money off of the project what a horrible f****** town to be From....

Originally there was the Roger Young Housing project that was constructed of rows of WWII army baracks. My family lived on the bottom of A drive and moved to the top of the project on Downing Ave. We were the last to move out. Roger Young was a WWII soldier who was partially blind and deaf, who after being given an order to retreat, went back in to save his comrades and was shot a number of times during his heroic effort, before being killed.
The smaller, older section of Burton was to the left and was constructed of red sandstone. Carved above the main door was established 1893 and Public School No. ____? The newer section to the right was built in 1923 and constructed of red brick! Heaven knows when the ugly grey cladding was added and windows reduced in size from their large picturesque view. Probably to insulate better. Attended from 1956 to 1962. Fond memories of my many friends growing up there. Mark Stanczyk

Love your vids man. Abandoned places have always fascinated me. But, when you talked about not wanting people to get you on the race card, and then go on to mention about the percentage of students....come on man. Could you not be more telling? Either way, love your vids. I will continue to enjoy them

The schools in Erie have been consolidated into one School because of lack of funds due to corrupt Democratic leadership which drove industry out of Erie. The General Electric plant will be closing soon which will cause more exodus of the population. However, more Muslim refugees are scheduled to be sent to Erie. I was born in Erie in 1950 and it used to be a dirty industrial town. Now it's just "dirty".

@@lovetoronto7453 I agree! The Demoncraps gained a foothold through the unions back in the day when Erie became an industrial city. I worked at the GE plant for four years and hated the unions and after awhile when I realized I was supporting a political candidate of THEIR choice, I quit the union and was told by a union steward that if I ever needed help, the union would not back me. After four years I left and became a truck driver and again, I was in a union where my Uncle was a steward. That did not work out! To this day the Demoncraps still hold the throne of politics up there and the taxes are so high, I'm surprised anyone can survive! I now live in NC where there's very few unions. I've been here for 31 years and retired as a Jailer with the Sheriff's Department where a union tried to worm its way in there but nobody wanted it.
