      I don't know honestly. But liquid metal is a quite a bit more performant I guess. Maybe 5 - 10 °C overall? Just guessing.

    Thanks Martin, I've spent the last few days watching videos on delidding and applying liquid metal. Your video was the one I chose to watch right before and during the process of delidding my 8700k. Very well put together and informative.

    I'm preparing to delid a i7 7700k soon. It will be my first time delidding a cpu and I have to say that your video provided all the information I was looking for while doing my research to ensure I didn't make any mistakes.
    Most people do not mention, or show the use/application of conformal coating on the board. This is what I was primarily looking for and your tutorial nailed it.
    Thank you very much. I liked the video and saved it to reference while I'm delidding my cpu. And you gained a subscriber thanks to how in-depth you went. For people doing something as nerve wracking as possibly destroying several hundred dollars worth of tech for the first time, you helped make me more confident and comfortable in tackling this successfully. So thanks!

      Thanks. But to be honest: I forgot a small, but not unimportant detail: leave a gap in the glue so that hot air can get out underneath the heat spreader. Not a tremendous mistake, but saves you even some more degrees. ;) I will do a delid soon again to see, how everything performed after a year and will then leave a small gap in the glue. BTW: you can also use nail polish instead of conformal coating. Saves you some money. ;)

      Agreed, and the link to the conformal coating was in the description. Very nice touch!
      I happen to have a blacklight (UV) right above my desk so I was able to confirm that the conformal coating covered fully covered the sensitive areas.

    You need to leave a small gap in the silicone seal, for gas to escape

      This makes sense in order to equalize the pressure. Allows for the expansion of the air under the IHS to escape when heating up; and to allow air back in as it cools.

    Very good video. The best I've seen. RE: 06:05 segment - MG Electronics 422B has been replaced with 422C. 422C uses Butyl acetate and isobutanol and 422B uses ethylbenzene and toluene. So the new formula is slightly less terrible to breathe? The B formula has ingredients on the list of things to avoid for cosmetic clear coat nail polish, but at least both 422 are designed for use on circuit boards and high temperature environments. Thank you for sharing.

    I would not recommend to reglue it because the motherboard clamp will put enough force on the IHS to hold it well in place.
    If you do reglue, then leave a gap for the air to dissipate through. In this video, the glue is placed all around the edges of the IHS with no hole for the air to dissipate through.
    If you look carefully at the pre-applied glue that Martin removes, there's a gap there as well.

    I have 1 year left on my tuning protection plan and warranty. Might just go ahead and delid it and if I screw something up I can always just get a replacement.

      Actually not too much can go wrong, if you use a dedicated tool like I did. But just be aware, that nothing is 100% of course. ;)

    Awesome video again! I don’t j is if you remember me from last video about the Vega card. I decided to upgrade the system, I went with same motherboard you have, upgraded to i7 8700k and with with a asus Vega 64 instead. The GPU will be in this Friday. I’ll keep you updated.

      So I have everything installed, and this machine is extremely fast now, the graphics are very smooth and fast compared to the gtx1070. However final cut fails to export video, trying to fix this.

      OK. Is the system freezing? Is there an error message (what's the error message if yes)? Is FCP just force closing? Those two things caused problems with FCP for me:
      1) Too high CPU cache voltage, when overclocking
      2) IGFX Mutli-Monitor-Support deactivated (which is actually deactivating the intel UHD overall)

    Hi Martin.. great video!! is it safe to delid the processor and not put the IHS back on it? so the processor's die direct contact with heatsik cooler or AIO cooler

      It's very likely that you will damage the die. Direct die cooling is more effective, yes, but very dangerous to do or at least not recommended except to extreme overclockers etc.

      I'll do. But first off all I will finish overclocking as next video. Afterwards it's again macOS specialized stuff. Have to just get the topics order sorted, because there are so many topics, I want to do videos about. Mostly the VST compatibility is, what delays my switch to Mojave and therefore a video about it.

      Good question. First maybe stay on an the latest release for a while. But at some point I will switch to Linux I guess. There are already tutorials out there on how to get it look like macOS.

    Hi. The silicon you use for the ihs is acetoxy or neutral. I read that acetoxy oxidizes metals.

    you watched one test from linus tech tip on air vs water noise ratio witch was based on price to performance ratio doesn't mean air is better than liquid cooling as im pretty sure a custom loop will work better then any aio or air cooler anyday down side lot more risk a lot more maintenance a lot more expensive not knocking what your saying as the price to performance ratio vs noise ratio is better just correcting that fact that with exceptions liquid will receive better temps overall under certain circumstances

      It was actually a quite indepth test by Optimum Tech. And yes he compared AIO vs air cooling, as they are somewhere in the same price range if you go the Noctua Route. Of course a custom loop and even an AIO can get better temps and with a lot of tweaking this is also quiet. But the cost and effort, especially in the long run with maintaining water coolers, the air cooler is my choice. Also the config of AIO under macOS is not possible … at least for RGB stuff. ;)

      @@MartinGuder i wan unaware of the AIO on mac it was a in depth video i have everything i need for the deluding but im to scared to do it lol i do have the 8700k as i want to go to 5.0 now im sure i could do it with out deluding if i go in and mess with the voltage my self but im not that good as i just got in top overclocking my self been doing build my whole life but i was scared to overclock for the longest i am actually RGB to max rgb ram rgb strips rgb fans rgb AIO

      ​@@jondillinger899 Was my first build after 10 years just working on Mac. Tested everything in case there is a fault in some parts before even scratching the warranty on purpose. After everything was fine I went straight to work and delidded and overclocked it. Delidding with a dedicated tool is quite easy and involves just some patience.

      @@jondillinger899 I lucked out and had stable 5GHz on all cores using the ASUS automatic profile. Maximus X Hero motherboard. I chose to delid to lower temps. I think the Asus profile is conservative and I can manually lower the voltage to further reduce temps. I will be doing that once the sealant dries and I can use my CPU again. This is going to be a long 24 hours. I'm excited though. Was hitting 95+ under load at 5GHz before.

    There's waaaaaay too much liquid metal here, it shouldn't pool on either surface, yours is pooling on both sides. Also, use the silicone in just small blobs => gas escapes, it's easier to remove in the future and it still does the same function. EDIT: Oh, also forgot to mention, the alcohol pads supplied with the conductonaut SHOULD NOT BE USED, as we can clearly see in the video, your die is still contaminated on the surface, it should be mirror shining when clean, not spotty like that. Using normal rubbing alcohol (IPA) will leave a perfect job and better heat transfer with better TIM sticking hence lowering the risk of frying your chip

      I set it to 1.355V … for daily work 1.34 V was also working, but stress testing was just stable there. So I left it on 1.355 V to avoid unwanted system crashes. I will edit a video on the overclock settings this weekend with some specialities I encountered for macOS/FCPX.

      most 8700k should be fine at 1.35v at 5ghz

      It depends more on the silicon lottery. In general there isn't even every 8700K capable of reaching 5 GHz.

      "You do not have to fill up all the silicons because the gases can not escape this bad relid, it's too bad, you have to leave a lot for the professionals, do not play the technician."
      If so good point. Maybe I'll do a second delid and take your advice into consideration. Next time would be cool to comment in english, as I don't want to spend extra time translating languages i do not understand.
