That truck is in sweet shape for its age...my dad had one when i was growing up, 238 DD very simple truck at the time..not much could go wrong as long as you put a gallon of oil in it every 2000 miles

The Detroit 2 cycle engine is an amazing durable engine. What a great product. These are classic trucks that helped build America and put food on peoples table. Great tractor. Excellent work btw. These are trucks worth saving.

Every part is the same as on 53, 71, 92, and 110.......just bigger scale . You have it firing but not quite enough fuel . Ole 2 Stroker Wayno goes through the same rituals on truck or industrial engines. I give you lots of credit, being more of a 4 stroke guru, you knew the basic principle and are a quick learner . Good job showing us a step by step procedure, and never got disheartened . I'm kinda surprised this engine didn't get donated to the Cool Spring Power Museum, where I've attended off and on for 40 years .

I took my semi license test (pre CDL days) in one of these. Single axle, no power steering, no air seat, 6-71 Detroit. It was 100 degrees, the woman giving the test asked me to turn around and go back to the office after a few minutes, I passed. It was too hot and loud in the truck.

O-H-I-O Porter greetings 🇺🇸 Happy New Year…2025! This is a great piece of American trucking history that you have! I had an uncle that loved these old GM trucks & had several for his transfer business. He had both single axle & dual. They were all red, too! Your truck sounds good, too! Looking forward to seeing it roll & run more! Keep On Truckin, my friend! Blessings. 🥰😎✌️

Nice looking project. I would definitely bend the gear lever to suit. In regard to the ‘prerusted cabin’, GM New Zealand brought in their first shipment of Isuzu SBR trucks in the early ‘80s, as deck cargo. Most of them disappeared from the road within 5 years😁! Later shipments were handled with greater care🙂. Cheers from NZ🇳🇿.

Sweet rig! I remember even as a kid thinking they crammed everything on the drivers side. There are advantages to those pedals being close together, as long as you don’t wear a size 16 boot, I can just see on a snowy or rainy day getting tangled up trying to stop. Wish they still made real trucks like this, great memories from way back when.

That's a four and a quarter inch bore with a five inch stroke. I guess five is a nice round number and makes for lots of torque. Caterpillar made a four stroke V8 (3208) that had that five inch stroke as well. It was just a little bigger with a four and a half inch bore for a total displacement of 636 cubic inches rather than 568 for the Detroit. I've never driven one of them two strokes yet. They tell me that you have to drive it like you're angry all the time (because it likes it like that). And yeah I think I'd want Jacob brakes on there as well, absolutely!
That's such a sweet style of truck that you almost never see now. I'm wondering what the horsepower rating is on the engine tag. That was a different era before all the five hundred horsepower plus rigs you see rolling down the highways now. You'd be holding up traffic in the mountains, chances are. But nobody needs to be in that big of a hurry. Cheers!

little weeker but in frame rebuild often gives several hundred thousand mor miles except in cal who dont understand the pollution for junking a good usable truck or bus and build a new one

You do know its sucking dirt , grit and etc... straight into the blower and destroying the blower and engine , right ? Thats a donaldson oil bath air cleaner , Ive cleaned many of them . You say you are not a muffler guy. I am 79 and very hard of hearing from driving 8v71s and 92s and 12v71 in the 70s and 80s and believe me you will regret your macho attitude about mufflers. Every truck I drove had mufflers and it still affected my hearing. There was very little (as in none) sound deadening used in most of the rigs then and they sounded good but the price is high. Good luck.

I'm not that macho. I wear hearing protection when I drive detroits.
Sometimes even when I'm driving my S/C cummins on the freeway
