What is a Ureteroscopy?

  • Ureteroscopy is a medical procedure that is performed by a urologist to evaluate the ureter. Dr. Daniel Reznicek from Pacific Northwest Urology Specialists (pacificnorthwesturology.com/u...) explains what a ureteroscopy is and what to expect from the procedure.
Ureteroscopy is performed with a small camera called a ureteroscope and is usually performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure.
Ureteroscopy is most often performed in the US to treat kidney stones using a holmium laser but it may also be performed to evaluate the ureter for other findings, such as hydronephrosis or to evaluate and treat urothelial cancer.
There are some advantages and disadvantages of the procedure in comparison to extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL). Ureteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure, however, ESWL is non-invasive. It has slightly higher risks. However, ESWL does not work well for very dense stones, those in the lower pole of the kidney, and sometimes may not be able to be performed if the stone is not visualized on X-ray or US. With a ureteroscope, the urologist is able to visualize the stone itself as well as the anatomy within the kidney. The stones may also be able to be grasped and removed with a basket completely, whereas after an ESWL the patient has to pass all the fragments that were broken.
Many urologists combine a ureteroscopy with the placement of a ureteral stent. This is a small, temporary plastic tube that is placed from the kidney to the bladder. This allows the ureter to heal after surgery.

I had this prodecure done 4 days ago. The only advice I can give you is to not believe everything you see on the internet, each body is different! I was terrified of this procedure thanks to the negative comments I saw on the internet and it turned out to be the opposite. I didn't feel a single percent of pain after the procedure. I felt instant relief! The only annoying thing is the stent... but that's about it! Just pray and leave everything in God's hands and everything will turn out great!

“There might be some pain.” Major understatement! 😉. If a urologist ever tells you that you may experience some “discomfort,” what he/she is really saying is, “This was once used as a method of torture in medieval times, and more recently by drug cartels and the CIA. It is excruciatingly painful after the general anesthesia wears off. Try not to scream 😱and scare the other patients, or cry 😭 like a little girl when you leave the outpatient surgical center with a bloody, burning weenie.” 😎

If any dr tells you “ this may be a bit uncomfortable “ you demand some sedation or at least xanax.
This hurt so bad I was in tears. They flat out lie.

I have had two elective ureteroscopy (one 5 weeks ago and one yesterday) it’s the best thing I’ve ever done! First procedure I had a stent in, yes it was uncomfortable but nothing I couldn’t handle. Second procedure I’m in some pain but nothing a small amount of codeine can’t fix. If you have kidney stones and from my experience it is worth it’s weight in gold. All my stones removed and a few years of peace. I’m one happy girl!

Had mine 6 days ago. Have a stent. Painful. But mostly nauseous. Pain being handled with just Tylenol. Took 2 days and weekend off of work. Can’t wait to have stent removed. Wish I never had the stent bc I understand it dose not remove stones. Not sure what the point was. But overall happy it is done and don’t be causing me problems anymore. I would say pain levels are 3/10. The nausea has been awful though.

I'm getting mine April 29th this year at Mary Immaculate here in Newport News Virginia a Ureteroscopy with the Holmium Laser under the care of Dr Ani with TPMG. After watching these videos and reading everyone's description of pain, etc makes me wonder if the way the patient is being treated during the procedure is causing the pain post surgery later. I have a Tic Tok video and talk about this exactly. When watching this video, observe how the doctor rushes while shoving the guide wire, etc quickly down the urethra very quickly. I have watched other videos with doctors from India saying to carefully and slowly push the guide wire down the urethra not to damage the urethra lining. You think these doctors that are pushing pretty quickly these quide wires down the urethra would want another doctor to do the same to them, heck no !! I'm not a betting man but after hearing why so many patients are having pain, etc, I'm betting this could be one reason. There doctor is rushing this procedure perhaps to get to another surgery hours later, or insurance time allocated reasons, or this is how he or she was trained. I'm not sure what the reason is but to reduce costs the more time you allocate for the patient that day for surgery reduces future costs on insurance companies if it's done in a way where the doctor doesn't appear to be rushed possibly causing damage to someone's urethra or something similar in nature. In other other words, they say the surgery can be on average from TH-cam research from 45 min to 3 hours at most. Would you want a 45 min procedure after seeing how fast this doctor rushes the guide wire down your urethra possibly causing you major discomfort and pain later. Or, would you want a 2 hour surgery where the surgeon carefully and slowly guides the guide wire down your urethra in which your discomfort and pain is much, much less during recovery after surgery. It's food for thought !! All I know is on April 29th I want Dr Ani to do door number 2 on me so that is exactly what my pain and discomfort is !! You are paying the bill at the end and should get what you pay for, eehh?? Just like anything else in life, right, when it comes to the bill ? The customer is always right, right ? Please don't comment, " Well, I don't want my doctor on his feet for so many hours taking that amount of time causing him to be tired, etc ! If your doctor can't stay on his feet for a certain amount of hours for surgery, he shouldn't be doing this in the 1st place. He needs to clock out and go home and look for another profession. ER doctors do this everyday and know that is what comes with the job. That's why ER doctors, your Urologist, make very good money because of the stress of the job and the hours of work that goes into, including the hours of surgery. I'm blessed to have very good doctors with TPMG thus far!. My GP and Urologist have been excellent so far and I hope they keep staying this way. I hope my long review helped and informed those of my opinion and I hope my procedure is nowhere close to what I've been reading come April 29th,2022 at Mary Immaculate in Newport News, Virginia. Have a great day everyone and hope all of you going through this has or is recovering well !!

Sir what is the difference between ureterascopy and laparoscopy. When I go back to work after uretrascopy.which is better

    • @kaylacorrine4139
      @kaylacorrine4139 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Laparoscopic they’ll make a few tiny incisions on your abdomen and use a scope with a camera on the end of it to look around. A ureteroscopy is similar to a cystoscopy if you’ve heard of that before. For a cystoscopy, the urologist will use a scope to look inside the bladder, and this is often done in the office with a local anesthetic. A ureteroscopy is the same thing except the urologist after looking inside your bladder, will advance the scope looking inside your ureter and up into the kidney. A ureteroscopy is usually done either under “twilight” sedation or general anesthesia.

Just had this done with a stringed stent put in. They put you under, it took under an hour. Not a painful procedure.
Expect blood in urine, and burning in uretha. Be ready, when pee comes there may only be seconds before it gushes out and you pee your pants.
I drank lots to flush the blood to avoid infection. It's been three days. No blood, burning is much less.
I have one concern, I get a pain level jolt, ache, of about 4-5 in the kidney up high when urine starts to flow. Feels like a stone is in there. Immobilizes me. I suspect displacement of urine by the stent stretches the walls of the urinary tube, the flow volume is restricted by the stent.
This lasts about 12 seconds when peeing then I'm fine.
Much better than raging 6 pain level that lasts for hours at a time, and comes and goes at will.
I cannot feel the stent itself.
Once stent is out 3 more days i should be completely free of pain.
Watch out for nausea, dehydration, fever.

I would advise anybody with lower back problems not to have this done. I came away from it with an issue with my left pelvic/hip area. I have been to my chiropractor and my doctor, both agree that it originated with this pricedure.
