Consumption is at decadal low levels. Inflation reduces spending sure, but the average value will overall increase. The video said that the consumption has doubled from 2011 - real inflation during this period has been in the 7-8% range. So, if something costed 100 rupees back then, it now costs 220+. So the average order value increases as a result of inflation.
That doesn’t mean the consumers are buying more - it just means that our currency has lost value. That’s what skewing the numbers.

inflation is a problem when growth stagnates and income increases, not simply because income levels have risen. If output slowed, and income increased, we could have higher inflation. On the other hand, if there is excess demand over supply too, we would have seen inflation. But since this is a growing economy, inflation is not an issue. • As income increases people spend less on food! (WHAT????)
      • Relative expenditure on cereals has not only declined, but there is near convergence on percentage expenditure between rural and urban residents. (Oh really! So what exactly are they eating? Grass?)
      • Narrowing gap on a staple in Indian thalis indicates relative deprivation of rural consumers in areas other than food (“deprivation”??? How….when the government says Poverty has decreased sharply?)
      • Madhavi Arora, an Economist wrote: _rural sector's marginal propensity to consume is higher than that of the Urban Sector_ .

Does the statistical analysis normalize spending to the increasing prices of goods and services? On one hand it is exciting to know that rural spending has doubled as this suggests progress. However, given that prices have increased generally, it's also possible that their income did not increase in proportion to their expenditure.

Agree on reducing inequality to be given priority but on the rest of figures - can you in the description atleast provide the calculation logic. Is this data available for public.
Increase in wages does not mean much with rising living cost. Many sectors are known to be witnessing decreases in wages not to mention poor job market. All this with price of essentials increasing as well. So for such known reasons looks like data quality or logic on evaluation might be incorrect.
Also would like to add that spending on items like washing machines definitely makes physical labor less but given climate impact as one of most critical existential threats, have we considered adding true cost to humankind esp in India where human labor needs work; making some chores manual will help put food on table for many poor and will help reduce carbon footprint 👣 - just an example. Lifestyle changes need to be looked at priority and such small siloed segments misleads from potential net loss to humans being projected as improvements.

First you need to earn to spend. People earning Rs 30,000 a month are considered wealthy, yet more than 80 crores still rely on government rations. High unemployment persists, and those who are employed are often underemployed. Why is there an issue about people spending? Godi media needs to address topics such as employment, education, and healthcare cost.

With a Rising GDP, but Slow Consumption and Low Savings, Is India’s Workforce Thriving or Surviving?
Ahead of the Lok Sabha election, the crisis of unemployment unites India as few things do. Why are important sections of India out of work? How do unemployed Indians live? Why is the work available not enough to earn a livelihood? How do Indians secure employment? How long is the wait?
Several economic indicators reveal a narrative at odds with the government’s portrayal of economic prosperity.Data on vehicle sales, dwindling consumption demand, high borrowings, diminishing savings, declining rural demand, unpaid labour, low-quality jobs, a declining labour rate.
Indians are managing to sustain themselves with their current jobs, rather than thriving under the government’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ initiative.
if FMCG(Fast-moving consumer goods) sales are sluggish, household savings are declining, and borrowing levels are soaring, it may suggest that workers are facing challenges in sustaining their living standards and may be merely surviving rather than thriving.
The trouble is we haven’t had a consumption survey. There was a consumption survey for 2017-18, but the government ditched that one because they didn’t like the results. A leaked version of that survey showed that rural consumption had actually fallen over that six-year period, from 2012 to 2018. And since then they have not had a consumption survey. They’re supposed to be doing one now, but we’ll not get those results for at least another year.
why would you not do a consumption survey? Because those surveys tell us how many poor people are there are in the country, where they are, what they do; they tell us about distribution, because these give us some indication of who can consume what.

I am tired of hearing unemployment, does anyone have a good definition of what it is and why people are not working? I have jobs for 3 people, will pay 20k take care of food, clothing and education for children. I have been trying for 10 plus years, not many takers. Even if I had someone, they work for few months and travel back to their home place because government is paying them under some scheme, paying for girl child, marrying kids.. I can’t drive anymore, they change every few weeks or months. One recently didn’t sleep enough and destroyed the car because he fell asleep. 0 personal responsibility. Don’t jump to any government, the root cause is there is no personal responsibility. Don’t get married if you can’t afford, don’t have kids if you can’t afford, if you want to marry and have kids be prepared to work. People are lazy, government should stop all free money schemes better yet we should not vote for anyone who promises free stuff.

Takeaway No. 5 - 4:28 : I think inequality of spending should increase more, a lot lot more. Assuming that the top 5% are the richi-rich people they should spend a lot more money on buying goods and services (meaning they are contributing more to growth of Indian economy) meanwhile the bottom 5% should spend as little as possible (meaning spending less money is sufficient for the poor to live a decent life in India).

Govt should use policy to tweak what food gets processed. Engineer policies that encourage minimally processed foods like canned tomatoes and rajma, and discourage potato chips, breakfast cereals and a thousand varieties of snack mixtures. Taxation may be a route to achieving this.

Animal protein and eggs contain more than protein. They contain vitamins, minerals and non-protein, non-fat, non-carbohydrate nutrients that are required for better human health.
The inequality factor is due mainly to income distribution. There will always be individuals and families who control most of the wealth in any society, BUT, standard of living for most depends not on wealth but on disposable income.
Strangely enough, wealth production also depends on disposable income, money circulating in the BULK of the population. BUT the wealthy owners believe that the profits from business depend on restricting the incomes of workers as a way of reducing costs, creating a cheap pool of workers, whereas this actually restricts demand, which reduces growth and profits... go figure!

Why should we calculate in percentage instead of actual money. In 2014 if our income was 1000 rupees and we spend 50 percent on food i.e. 500 rupees. In 2024 our income is 4000 rupees and we spend 30 percent.i.e. 1200 rupees. So in reality we are spending more money. There is not too much difference in food prices between 2014-24. So definitely the percentage will be less.

Ohh come one ma'am, your first point is not correct. We can not compare amount of money belonging to different time.
In case of rural India, we have to multiply 3700 rupees by the ratio of CPI(consumer price index) of 2011 to CPI of 2023, then we'll get the actual increase or decrease.
