California Native No Mow Lawn | Sara Bendrick

  • Traditional lawns can use a lot of water and maintenance and artificial turf can be hot and lifeless. We decided to use a California native sod to create a soft green meadow in this space. It provides the texture, color and cooling effects of a traditional lawn, but uses less water and is less maintenance since mowing is optional.

    Omg I love this! My mom and I have been going back and forth between what to do with our lawn. I've been trying to convince her to have a california native garden but she's having a hard time letting go of her lawn so I think this is an awesome alternative and she'll still get to keep the green that she loves so much!

    This grass is awesome and we put it in at our house. Unfortunately our gardener seems to be unable to keep it looking great. It often has a lot of dead grass within it. I read that you thatch in the fall, but can we thatch several times a year when it looks bad? We are in Northern California. BTW, the remodel of this yard is awesome - looks great!

    It seems bigger pavers are needed for tall grass or a solid pathway. I do wonder about the maintenance to keep it full and green.

    • @sarabendrick1828
      @sarabendrick1828  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes bigger pavers would be easier to find after the grass grows in. However, this was a very small lawn area so we opted for smaller pavers here. Best way to maintain is with a string trimmer.

    Recently read about Dwarf carpet of stars for lawn substitute, if someone wants something lower growing.

    • @susana5052
      @susana5052 ปีที่แล้ว

      I saw info on that ground cover too. I discovered that “Nama” aka Stars of Carpet, after 3 to 4 years is can or will get “woody”. Now it can be replaced in those areas as they happen but that’s not really a good opinion for me.
      I don’t even know the cost of “Nana” plant. I’m still doing research and hopefully I can find something that will either delay or stop it from getting ”woody”.🙏🏻
      I’m 100% disabled and as time passes I get worse. can’t do anything that requires bending my back or even doing any repetition of of movement or even being in one position for more than 10 to 15 minutes at a time. Now I’m on the fence about both of these. I hope I will find something that is real ground cover, pet friendly, doesn’t require much water and heat tolerant. Plus doesn’t have to be Chan out to often. I would be happy to find something that would last just 10 years! I would be happy to replant every 10 years.
      Fortunately it doesn’t get that cold here much so that’s good, I think.🤔
      The Nana would have been perfect if it didn’t get woody…I wanted to cry when I read that.😢 It seems there’s nothing out there that is pet friendly and not artificial turf which isn’t an option where I live. It’s too hot for turf. Turf Hass to be watered down because it gets hot so quickly. It’s not unusual for 100° plus where I live. I’m grateful that we don’t have any deep freeze but it also has its drawbacks since it’s ALWAYS so hot here in Southern California.😔💔

    I love this! It’s been about a year since you posted this. Does it still look as beautiful? Sometimes these lawns look patchy in spots over time. If that happens, do you throw seeds on the patches? If so, which seeds since you had a combo of 3 different grasses? Also, how often does that lawn get watered? I really want to do this. Thanks so much!

      HI Jill thanks! Glad you love it! The homeowners have kept up on this by making sure weed grass was pulled when it comes up (along the edges are a problem area in the beginning. .. they did has a favorite spot on the grass that he has worn in but other than that, its been a pretty successful install. you can get filler seeds at S&S seeds. I believe that's what our HOA has put in our common areas. Most homes don't have have grass but mine was a spec house and they put grass in the front lawn. My partner decided not to water it as much due to the water shortage in California and wondered why it turned brown. We got a lot of rain in the last 8 weeks but we have brown spots and he thinks it will just come back. I think he's looking into that meadow look but when our grass was long it didn't look like the grass in the common area. I'd like to put grass seed down but I'm not sure if we indeed have the same. How can you definitely tell?

    Kind of cool, but would not work for my dogs and kids to play on. Kids would trip, and picking up the dog poop would be nearly impossible. Also, being that long there will be more rodents, ticks, and snakes hiding out. This will work for some, but for me it's a no.
