I'm in Monterey county and my house has a huge south facing front yard that is completely open to the sun because there's nothing across the street. I've been looking for something to replace that horrible strip of grass for a while. I've also been looking for a front lawn replacement. I can't wait to see more of your videos, thank you!

Look up Phyla nodiflora -- Frog Fruit. It's a native, and way better suited to replacing lawn, imo, because it's evolved to be in the area.

I loved your video so much so that I went on the landscape website. Can you recommend a no mow ground cover that can be planted where my beautiful Birch tree exists. The Dwarf Carpet of Stars doesn't need much water but the birch tree does. Thanks for any ideas

Thank you. This video is both inspiring and informative. I agree about lawns and why I went surfing on TH-cam for an alternative. I have questions about the type of ground cover that attracts birds and butterflies. Not a fan of bees so flowering one's are probably a bad choice. I also have a stunning Birch tree in front where the lawn is and wonder about the fallen leaves and removal with ground cover. I'm in Central Coast California and wonder if you provide service to San Luis Obispo County or can recommend legit landscaper?

Hi! What do you recommend for Bakersfield, CA, Zone 9?
(Also I know people with fake lawn, and they have to water it with a hose in the summer so it’s cool enough for their kids to walk on 😬.)

@@thataintit2133 So far I've only planted birds of paradise along the house. I'm still thinking about what to do for the rest of the side area. I'm planning to use Kurapia. I think this video was taken in Fresno which is the same climate as Bakersfield: th-cam.com/video/LLBkts-fqU8/w-d-xo.html

Ruschia nana is dymondia are both great and you can walk on them. Check out videos on this. Put pre-emergence weed control after planting plugs to cut the weed germinating . These are both drought tolerant and very limited water use.

    Nice video,
the watering habits of homeowners waste more water than the actual turf. functional turf vs non functional ?
The history of turf grass and why it became popular here in California I guess is well preached but I never heard of such nonsense back in the Midwest where yes, we get ample rain fall and most properties do not need a irrigation system.
Keeping up with Jone's by having manicured lawns was not really a big deal. in the city or out in the country.
The judge is still out, in my opinion, on that historical story.
    Grave yards are functional ?
Most of them just like golf courses are on their own wells but the amount of fertilizers, pest control products and other related products they use they are getting by home owner restrictions because of the money that is being made each month and year by the cemetery barons and county from taxes is worth the grass issues you point out for home owners.
And yeah, they have strict environmental regulations to obide by but money talks in that arena.
People still over water the newly planted items mentioned because they tend to repeat the same watering habits they had prior to removing the turf.
Or , their gardener does not know any different, or uneducated on the new plant materials ( chesp clients want to pay the gardeners peanuts so they get what they pay for ) so they just water every other day and know nothing beyond setting the run times and days on a controller.
Your point is well made, but it should also be followed up with education on proper irrigation practices or all that dymondia, thyme, and succulents will be wasted money on over water plant materials
    and a weed patch.

How about less personal opinions, lets talk about water usage in another post and just jump into the types of ground cover you are talking about. Literally 50% of this video is a long-winded lecture about water usage.

Your talking about mainly Southwest and western lawns are you not ...🤔
Lawns back in he midwest, the south and in other states get ample free rain water and provide excellent carbon sinks.not aton of clippings going to the lical dumps either becaue the clippings are mulched miwed in most cases and left to provide nutrients to the turf as they degregate naturally.
We have rediculos mandates on lawns now especially here in California.
I agree we must conserve water but if more focus was put on watering efficiency, maintenance efficiency and knowledge of how to properly manage turf grass, a lot less water could be wasted in my opinion.
Home owner and business owner landscaping maintenance requirements ignorance and most of the time their cheap monetary investment in hiring mow - go- and blow bandits have made the situation of water wastage
    worse...🙈
Address the real issue of proper water management rather than telling a history of keeping up with the Jones lawn from
    England....😄
