Echo thumbs up once again on the idea of the winch. I'm lifting a Thule roof basket on and off that weighs about 60lbs, so this will save the paint on the top of my car and a hospital stay.

Very nice design. However, you can buy from Thule (Swedish Roof Box manufacturer) a ready made, simple, roof box lift which will do this job. The model is the either the 571 or 572, check it out on utube, I have two of them, they are brilliant! (I don't work for Thurle by the way)

Great and thanks so much for taking the time to record this. A great bit of kit that’ll save me a lot time researching a solution.

Thanks for the very detailed break down of your system. I'm looking at what others have done because I was trying to build a hoist for my skybox as well, but ran into the thing being too heavy to lift. I'm only using a single-pass set of pulleys, so will need to double up on them. The manual winch is a great idea too - will have to keep an eye out for one. Thanks again.

You did inspire me to take on this project! Unfortunately I don't have the headroom on the door opening to enter & exit with the box mounted on the Jeep so it will only be for storage. I will still have to hump it outside to mount. A major disappointment but for storage it's a major plus....nicely designed!
When building in 2008, I wisely put 9' wide garage doors...I overlooked the headroom...I'm short by about 8"...my wife would commit me if I deflated the tires each time to mount & drive!

My only issue with this is I think it should be hung from 4 points. Probably not a huge issue but personally I’d be concerned about lateral compression across the box. The lids aren’t very strong and this could damage them.

What winch do you recommend that is suitable for wall mount? Perhaps an electric one? I need one for a roof carrier and one for a 100lbs e-bike

Super video! One question: How did you attach the winch to the wall? Did you have to modify the winch housing (e.g., did you drill holes into the housing)??

I did not drill or modify the winch housing. The winch has a number of holes in its housing so, using these, I bolted a leg of each of two corner braces to the winch housing and then screwed the other two legs into the wall studs by the garage door (stop the video at :44 to view).

@@prharp Now I see/understand how you attached the winch. Thanks! Good job!
