Separation Anxiety & Screaming: My Easy Cure

  • You enter the room and your parrot screams. You leave the room and your bird cries!
How do I handle separation anxiety? Well, I don’t really have too much of it. Some parrots are naturally loud, like my Macaws. For the most part, my parents all have a cage mate or more. So they aren’t missing their flock and don’t usually scream because they want me to come to them.

My GCC used to have separation anxiety when I first got him as I went out often to doctor appointments. I got two budgies to help keep him company. It worked. No more freak out behavior when I would return home. My Grey squeaks when I leave the room but she has learned what “I’ll be right back” means.

I got my conure at a petco. I visited her everyday when she was still there and her separation anxiety grew from there. She hated when I left. Once I brought her home the first time she came out her cage. She came straight to me to cuddle and sleep the night away in my hands. Her separation anxiety just kept getting worse from there. I can’t even go to the bathroom without her with me because of how LOUD she will scream for me.

If it is hard on you, consider getting another Conure. They tend to help each other, and the second Conure may ease your Conures anxiety. It’s possible it won’t help, but unlikely.

I have a 13 year old cockatiel, and now that I moved out from my parents house to an apartment, I can't leave the house because he makes a lot of noise. I don't want to have problems with my neighbors
I got him a bigger cage with more toys. During the week I work from home, we spend a lot of time together. But I wish I could leave the house without being afraid of him making a lot of noise.

He will adjust, though your neighbors may be mad by then. What about getting another Tiel for company?

Mine feed off each other. The only thing that quiets them is calming music for parrots. Most of the time we don’t even notice the calling, whistling and talking. They’re birds and that’s what they do. I completely agree with you about Amazons and Macaws. When I worked at My Sinai Hospital on Miami Beach, Macaws and Conures would come in the evening to roost in the palms on the property. The noise was deafening.

Unfortunately, I’m not surprised. GCC don’t usually get along with other species very well. That’s why I always recommend two of the same species. Can you get another GCC and another cockatiel?

I like that, whistling. Macey is similar. She doesn’t bond with birds, she follows me, but she’s pretty quiet. Keep communicating with her they way we talked about. Now Lorenza just says, “Bye, bye!”

Hi, when you say to get another parrot, Does it have to be the same species or is a different species good enough? My ekki panics every time I leave the room and I know he needs a buddy because I can't be there with him 24/7. I would like to get a different species but I don't know if they will bond with each other at all.
