my tip for photo backdrop for people starting out and not wanting to drop $40-$50 for legit photo paper: Dollar store poster boards. I use 3 white boards, one laid flat, and the other two leaning up against the corner of a wall. They come in black as well
I have seen sellers that use the two soft boxes and an additional ring light in front as a "fill in", ant the pictures look really good. Your comparisons are a great help, Thanks.
good job... you can always place the ring light to the side and use a whiteboard to bounce light back. you don't have to have the Ring Light directly over the subject. since you have both, try place the diffuser around the ring light that will soften the light. although it doesn't come with one you can improvise. All in all a great comparison video... awesome job sir...
Thank you. I just looked at 20 different videos on lighting for reselling and I wish I had seen yours first! You kept it simple and short and helped me finally make a decision on what I am going to purchase. Thank you!!
Thanks for showing the comparison photos at the end! Most people leave this off and I feel it is the most important in order for someone to make a decision. Good job!!
My ring light came with a clamp mount for my phone and a bluetooth clicker. You can stage your photo with a ring light and have perfect tripod stability at the same time which is a massive advantage over buying a separate tripod with the box lights.
Just stumbled upon your video as I was researching lighting for my Etsy shop product photos. At 4:18-19 in the video as you're shooting through the ring light with your phone it shows gray shadows on the product area. This is EXACTLY what I've been dealing with for the last few months with my new iPhone 14pro and trying to eliminate those shadowy bands has taken me down a rabbit hole of different lighting options. On your finished photo you don't see the shadows, but on my photos you do. I currently am using a DIY light box with white poster boards and foam core and a diffusing panel on the side with a daylight 5000K LED plus an overhead LED light (also daylight 5000K). My photos without adjusting exposure are too dark and I have these gray shadow bands on them as well. I was thinking about a ring light to see if that would eliminate the shadows and then on your video I saw those same shadow bands. Please can you advise what might be happening and how to eliminate them? I am soooo frustrated with how my photos are turning out. I got better photos with my old iPhone 11 before upgrading to this supposedly much better phone camera! Thanks so much.
Hairy Tornado I love your videos and have learned a lot from you. HOWEVER here is a warning to anyone who, like me, has never touched photography equipment in their life and is totally clueless. This brand of lights comes with no instructions at all for set up etc. Yes you can fumble thru it like I did but it’s annoying. I’ve been using them for a few days w terrible results and hating them. Until I rewatched this video and said Hey! What are those white screens over the harsh bulbs? I didn’t get those! Umm yes I did but didn’t even know what they were, thought they were cleaning cloths or something and didn’t even open them. Like I said, I’m clueless and instructions would have been nice. Time to start rephotographing yet again! 😬
Finally someone interesting to watch! You are really great at keeping viewers attention! I loved watching your video, never change! I will be keeping an eye out for more to watch :)
It is more important to set your camera appropriately if you are able to use custom settings. I have 2 soft boxes and they work well for large items. I wanted to set up a small photo area next to my desk for small flat lay items I cannot scan. It would be stationary and not need to be moved much. Most pics would be straight down. For small items like buttons, small books, and large documents. I think I am going to buy a ring light.
Hey, Hairy Tornado! Thanks again for the advice you gave me over at Ralli Roots live video! You got a new subscriber! I'm just starting out reselling so this video helps a lot! Thank you!
3 point lighting best explains it. For work I use it, for reselling I get a little lazy and just use sunlight + ring light. For glares a simple reflector(poster board) works.Good video!
Had to revisit this as I’m still struggling to get my lighting right. 😩 Ring light leaves a round reflection in many items. Had old school clamp lights and they created dark bars thru my photos….what are you currently using? I’m wasting so much time editing. 😊
This was really helpful. I have been using 2 soft boxes plus the ring light but you are right, that darn ring light is in the way every-time. So lately I have been doing just the 2 soft boxes and then adjusting the brightness post.
Great video! I've been having problems with shadows, you helped me with this. I have always hung my clothes for pictures but you have to take so many pictures of each item to really see what the item looks like. Now I'm going to use a sheet on the floor. Thanks Josh for the info.
There should be a link to the ones I use in the description. Mount Dog I believe. They are awesome! Thank you! I'm learning, growing and hopefully improving with every upload.
Hello. Thanks for your video. I’ve start a business of resell but I want better quality on my product photos. I don’t have much space and also I don’t have natural light on room.. I’ve capture the photos on the wooden floor… what light do you recommend me. I was thinking about a ring light.. but after I see this video I don’t know. Can you tell me please ?!
I know this is old, but wanted to mention usually you don’t want your room lights or any other lighting on when you’re using ring lights or soft box lights because the additional lighting (like bedroom light or closet light, etc.) can mess with the color in the photo. Hope that makes sense 😂
It's not a fair comparison. The ring light is delivering 'raw' light, whereas the softboxes are modified by the fabric or scrim in front of them and the inner textured reflective sufaces. Also the light being delivered by the ring light unidirectional. This why they are used as fill lights to fill in shadows.
Hello! I was wondering if you have any updated product photography lighting videos? I’m having a hard time with soft boxes and trying to take pictures on a mannequin. I have really hard shadows on each side. I tried clicking the links in your description but I believe they have expired!
Hi Hairy, Thanks for a lot of valuable infotmation, I am currently looking for a light to shoot apparels for my website. Everything will be shot in a room. Could you please help me in suggesting which light should I be using? Single source hard light or panels lights and which one in particular.
I think to be fair, you should have used two ring lights, one on each side, that way you wouldn't be complaining about not being able to get in for photos as easy, and the lighting would probably be much better without as many shadows.
hello. I shoot luggage product photography for my company. however the studio is in the warehouse where there is a lot of yellow-ish ambient light. I was wondering if two alien bee B400 flash units in the front and a few overhead florescent lights would suffice. the studio is made of a 5 by 5 foot wooden tent, with a white paper backdrop and white walls. there's not a lot of room inside for other kinds of light, i'm afraid. just the overhead lighting and the flash units in the front.
Great question. I would try to cover up that yellow light from above with a sheet or something over the wooden tent. Then youd want as much "natural" light as possible. I would go with an LED gooseneck Lamp. If you get two of these, you can clip them to the table and they wouldn't take up much space. I'm not a pro photographer or anything, but generally, the more natural light, the better.
The principle is to only choose the right and not the expensive. This principle applies only to popular demand. Now the common parameters of the latest lamps in 2022: 1. (1) There are 10 levels of brightness, and the color temperature is 2900K-6700K. If you can't reach it, you can pass it directly, because they are out of date; (2) The computer clip used by 6-8inch has the disadvantage of damaging the computer screen. 10-12inch use desktop stand, limited lighting range and usage scenarios. 14-16 inches, these two sizes are relatively small, neither big nor small, and the scope of application is limited. 18-20 inches, more recommended, the brightness and usage scenarios can meet most needs, 21-22 inches, the brightness is better, but due to the large head of the lamp, the bracket is unstable and easy to tilt. (3) Most of the brackets on the market are of the same specification, and the selling points of each are concentrated on the ring light. 2. 1%-100% LED display, I suggest that non-professional photographers do not need to choose, can you see with your eyes where the difference in brightness between 10% and 15% is? When we generally use it, we use our eyes to see if it meets our lighting effects. It is just like the general rotation and buttons to adjust up and down. 2. There are two types of power supplies, one is USB and the other is Power Adapter with Plug. If you have high requirements on the brightness of the light, choose the Power Adapter with Plug, because it includes all the brightness of USB and higher. 3. The number of lamps directly affects the effect of lighting. The more lamp beads of the same specification, the more evenly distributed the light. Color Rendering Index CRI>90, the higher the CRI, the better, the closer to natural light, the more expensive the price. 4. The more lamp beads of the same specification, the more uniform the light will be. If you can't remember so many parameters, it doesn't matter. Look at the title. The parameters displayed in the title represent the seller's advantage. If the advantages of the title cannot reach the above parameters or the description indicates that this parameter is lower than the basic parameters on the market, Sellers want to highlight their advantages and make you want to buy. Just out of curiosity what are people s experience with these soft box lights? The reviews on Amazon are not so good. So I'm nervous to buy it. Any thoughts would be appreciated....
Which led lights do you use and what size softboxes do you mount on them? I am looking for options for continuous lights for jewelry and food photography , so what would you suggest?
On the pictures of the shoes, you did appear to display a different tone on the base color with the different lighting choices... will that effect the sales (particularly with showing the color of an item) if the color appears to be a little "off"?
I think the true color was shown better with the soft boxes. I would just refrain form using any weird filters on your photos. Just take normal photos with soft light and the colors should be true. I've never had a buyer return for color variation.
I like the ring light for ebay , you can adjust the light, I would like to see the test using your canon and objects that have lots of detail I think the soft boxes would do better
I use a white artist eraser to remove spots on my white background paper... Just thought I'd throw that in there for anyone that uses the same paper as him and Rally Roots which is also why I bought mine because they were using it! LOL
I want to photograph the apparel for our business. I am a green hand. But I don't have too much space. At the same time, the apparel is big stuff for the ring light. So I am thinking which way can be the best for our business. Though your comparison is good.
Great Video. I like my soft boxes but have been wondering about the ring light. I will wait to get that when I start my you tube channel 1st quarter next year. Thank you

Yes I was gonna do this
Thx ya for the tip
can i see on what you did there?
Nah that shits boring you need to stand out, be creative
I’ve tried that but for some reason the background looks grey or has a yellowish tint.
Literally the video ive been looking for 🙌🏽🙌🏽
So how is your ring light help for your photography so far, may I ask?
I have seen sellers that use the two soft boxes and an additional ring light in front as a "fill in", ant the pictures look really good. Your comparisons are a great help, Thanks.

I used a dollar store plastic tablecloth for a backdrop for a while. It worked okay. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for this. I'm totally new to product pictures and lighting and this is the most straightforward example I found.

Thanks for the comparison. I just ordered two soft-box lights yesterday on Amazon. Can't wait to try them out!
Let me know how you like them!
Sure will @@HairyTornado They should arrive at my doorstep sometime today. Woot!
@@CraftyDad how did they work out for you? I'm about to order a set of three but wanted to read how people felt about them first

Do the soft boxes get very hot?

Do you still use these same lights or what new lights do you use?

It was just a white bed sheet but I've found that vinyl window covers work really well

Thank you for the video. Question, what do you recommend I do in order to avoid glare, when taking photos of a packaged Star War toy?
I wouldn't worry about it too much. As long as you can see what the item is
Which led lights do you use and what size softboxes do you mount on them? I am looking for options for continuous lights for jewelry and food photography , so what would you suggest?
Neewer ring lights are best for what you need.
@@HairyTornado and for led lights like godox SL series or led panels ? And also which is an advisable size for the ring light?

I think the true color was shown better with the soft boxes. I would just refrain form using any weird filters on your photos. Just take normal photos with soft light and the colors should be true. I've never had a buyer return for color variation.

I like the ring light for ebay , you can adjust the light, I would like to see the test using your canon and objects that have lots of detail I think the soft boxes would do better
HT...to improve your soft box lighting you could use brighter bulbs
I use a white artist eraser to remove spots on my white background paper... Just thought I'd throw that in there for anyone that uses the same paper as him and Rally Roots which is also why I bought mine because they were using it! LOL
I want to photograph the apparel for our business. I am a green hand. But I don't have too much space. At the same time, the apparel is big stuff for the ring light. So I am thinking which way can be the best for our business. Though your comparison is good.
Hey Josh?, Do you use the soft box in this video still? Just wondering if you still recommend it.
I do! I have 2 of them that I use every day
Which light are you using inside the softbox?
Reflective surfaces?
Your photos are very well done. Thank you for the insight
Great Video. I like my soft boxes but have been wondering about the ring light. I will wait to get that when I start my you tube channel 1st quarter next year. Thank you
Great vid for lighting. Helps me greatly. Thx for doing the vid!!
Did you buy your lights on Amazon?
I did! There should be links to them in the description. :)
@@HairyTornado I'm a dumbbutt, sorry I seen what ones you had and I meant to edit my message but I got to looking at Amazon 🤣🤣 thanks tho
