Back in 2004 I made my own speed light diffusers first with mat board and black masking tape then with to 9x12 sheets of 2mm thick craft foam black on outside, white on inside. I’ve also made them from plastic place mats and even 4-5 sheets of typing paper stapled together. It takes all of 15 minutes to make one.
This was great. Now we need to see something similar for outdoor shooting. The best ones from this set are using the walls to reflect the light. That doesn't work in wide open spaces. I'd love to see the exact same comparison under those conditions! EDIT: Nevermind! I just found your outdoor video! Sweet! :)
My goodness. You are a gem! I can’t believe I only discovered your channel today. The paper trick really works!! I used it today and I had to do a dance afterwards. Thank you so much. Your videos are so lovely and such a joy to watch.
Haha, you’ve made my day, thank you. I love the thought of a photographers dance to celebrate a good photo. I’m going to try that myself. I have been wondering what kind of video to make going forward and you’ve made me think, what about some of the tricks and cheats we use on jobs to achieve the look we want when we don’t have all the equipment with us. Thank you for that, cheers Phil 😊
It is funny. I have a large diffuser, an octabox. I always bring someone to help me, but the week before I went to a session alone, I took the octabox, but I ended up using, the winner of your video. I had it stored on my desk, unused, thinking it was useless. I took this diffuser (the silver one) and it has helped me a lot. I can't believe I had it saved as a barusa without knowing what it was going to do for me. In lightroom, I make small corrections. Thanks for the video.
You’re welcome, I’m glad you found the Video useful and even better news, the winning diffuser came to help you out on a job. That’s great news! Thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it 👏📷😊
Lambency? I thought for a minute I was about to hear Catherine Tate's Nan reaction 😂 Kidding aside, the one that you gave 10/10 is my go to diffuser. Kudos to whoever has designed it. And yes you're right about the no nonsense appeal and function of the product in contrast with other contraption presented here and elsewhere. In fact, it never fails in the heat of the action provided the elastic band stays snugly fit. Keep this channel alive and more power to you 👍💪
Thank you for your very kind comment. But truth be known, most of the time, there is a simple and inexpensive alternative. You pays your money you takes your choice I guess. Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it. 👏
I have most of these. I agree the elastic white/silver diffuser you like so much is very good. Except for one thing. and it's not minor. When shooting in a crowded event for example, it tends to fall off. Easily. It's best not to trust the elastic alone. Tape it to the head as well.
I always keep a white shower curtain and a roll of gaffer tape in my bag - I've got some really nice results with it as a reflector or diffuser. Handy for diffusing strong sunlight coming thru a window too.
Simon what a great tip, large diffusers can be so expensive, and finding something big enough to diffuse sunlight in portraits when you’re on a budget is hard. This is the answer, brilliant. I’m going to order one and try it out. Thanks so much for that super hack, can’t wait to try it. 👏📷😊

I always thought the white 'bouncecard' built into the flash head @@Iykplusphotography15 is too small. I actually made my own from just a piece of white cardboard and had been using it quite successfully, but when I saw this one which is custom designed with the elastic strap, and for the cheap price I just had to have one. I still use it regularly when doing indoor photography with my on camera flash. It is absolutely 10/10 as you said👍
Glad we agree. I have❤ that little card one,and it goes with mine everywhere. And I took one look at the Gary Fong stuff and said ‘no’! It was half the price of the flash, and basically was an empty yogurt container with some pleats. Good scam!
Manuel you are most welcome, and I’m glad you found the video useful, thank you for your kind comments, and thank you for watching, it’s much appreciated 👏😊
I'm been using an A5 size piece of white cardboard, held on with elastic bands, for some years now. It invites some comments but I reply that it's a choice between that and a €70 piece of plastic, so I go for the obvious one. I'm a newspaper photographer, mostly covering social events, sports and local news, so I need a note book to write down names, etc. The cardboard comes with the notebooks.
I like your thinking and a real green answer too, perfect recycling. In my 16 years as a press tog we used to use whatever was at hand to make the picture work, and this is a perfect example of that. Bravo 👏 👏👏
Thank you for those very kind words, you are most welcome. I’m trying to cover everything from beginner to advanced but if there is anything you’d like to see covered just leave a comment and I’ll do my best. Hope you enjoy watching, 📷👍🏻😀
I started using the "winner" several years ago while shooting pics of community (55+) events that were held indoors (dinners, parties etc.) and found that it worked. I didn't really try the silver side much and will have to try it. I've also tried the small softboxes but they are so difficult to fit on smaller flashes used with my micro 4/3 camera bodies. So, I'll be happy to continue using and doing some tests with the inexpensive winner. Thanks for posting a really useful review!
Thanks for watching. Yes, had I been on manual flash mode you’re right, the additional bounced flash would have been useful, but the speedlight was in TTL mode so with a subject so close, it was cutting the flash output down big time, nowhere near enough output to make it to the ceiling and back with enough juice to change results. Of course, as photographers we often find ourselves in rooms with white ceilings so I guess had it bounced, that would still be part of the results, some reflectors add bounce, some don’t. Maybe I should repeat the test in a hall or church, that’s a good idea thank you, I might do that. Thanks for commenting too, I really do appreciate it 👍🏻
@@rileyphotos With several of the diffusers a large proportion of the flash would have gone straight up to the ceiling and only a small amount forward - as with the 10/10 bounce card it would also depend whether it is mounted straight up and down or with a forward tilt to it. It would have also been useful to use plain bounce flash with the white card out. I know, it's always easier when you're suggesting someone else does all the work :)
@@thefrugalphotographernot at all, I’m always open to debate 😊 I have to disagree with you though on a large proportion of the flash going up, it’s the way TTL flash works. It measures the light bouncing back from the subject as you know, which means it would have lit such a close subject very easily with hardly any flash and cut the output off. This means the amount going to the ceiling would have been insignificant. With a manual flash the bounce would have had an effect but not in TTL. The option of including bounce flash alone would, you’re right, have been interesting, but the flash would have kicked a full power flash out so again, it’s different to the TTL straight flash output. But again, it’s real life situation testing rather than scientific, and both environments are I think similar to the kind of places one would use the diffusers. I am going to take up your idea though and find a church or hall to repeat the test. It will be interesting to see and I’m sure provide some answers. This is what is great about photography, I love chatting about it, thanks for taking the time to comment 👏
Hey Raymond, that’s a great point, I didn’t consider that, it would work well for macro instead of a ring flash. Maybe I should have given it an extra point for that!! Thanks for watching and for your comment, much appreciated 👍🏻📷😊
This diffuser new version can be found here at the price of $8.99 : www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1499346-REG/angler_psfd_100_portable_speedlight_flash_diffuser.html/overview It can fit my Laowa 65mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO (lens diameter : 57mm, 2.24"). Hope this helps.
I also have this one, Raymond, and it works great for macro. The problem is that my Tamron 90 mm macro lens is quite fat, and, as the video points out, the hole is too small. I´ll need to find a way of widening the hole without destroying the contraption. I have to repeat, though, that it produces very nice macro shots.
@@seanconery8836 I nearly bought this one, Sean, but the shipping to where I live is twice the price of the product. Add on 30% import duties - I think I´ll make one of my own.
You show? The. Gary Phhong with? The inverted dome is that the right way to use it. I inherited it along with the equipment to use. I never thought about using it inverted..
Something that I liked using was the "Rogue Photographic Design FlashBender v3 Soft Box Kit". It's a large, well put together paper that you can shape and reshape to the type of bounce of light you desire. You can even form it into a nice snoot. The cost is about £ 83.
That sounds like a very interesting bit of kit, I’ll see if I can get hold of one to take a look, thank you, and thanks for watching and commenting too. 👍🏻📷😀
Obrigado por sua demonstração dos difusores de luz... eu estava com muitas duvidas a respeito mas seu video foi muito claro e explicativo. Você ganhou um fã.
This video was exactly what I needed! Wanted to find a review as well as some sample images using the diffuser that you gave the 10/10 rating for :) Definitely giving it a buy. Found the exact model at $1.95 too! Thank you so much, keep up the great work 👍🏻
Thank you. Yes you’re right there, the ceiling is always the best option for softening flash, but sometimes when I find myself in a theatre or hotel lobby or conference centre with low mood lighting and a fifty foot higher ceiling, these flash diffusers have really help me out. Thanks for watching and your kind comments, I really appreciate it. 📷👍🏻😀
Great comparison video and thank you for that! Unfortunately the link to the outdoor test has been missing. Would you please put it back up again? Thank you again!
You needed to test the 2 softboxes in the bounce position EG pointing the flash up like you did with the others. Also where was the bare flash bounced? One advantage of the strange goes round the lens thingy is that it would work with the camera's pop-up flash.
That’s a very good point, the on lens would work with a pop up 👍🏻 The diffusers we’re used as per manufactures instructions. Some are designed to reflect, some to diffuse and some to scatter. Thanks for watching and commenting, it’s much appreciated 📷😊
GREAT vid! You nailed the addage that the best solution is not always the most expensive one. I have the silicone Fong and it is pretty good. However I have had just about as much luck with results by using a doubled sheet of trace paper and rubber band...ha. keep up the great content!
Thank you for those kind comments, I’ve just repeated the test with the same diffusers outdoors, very interesting results! It’ll be posted on my channel in the next few weeks 👏📷😊
9:16 Hey! why is gery fong adding some pink tint to the highlights and skin tones in this photo? Or is it just by accident in this photo? Even on a cheap analogue, skin tones look nicer.
Loved this video. I haven't got a flash diffuser yet. I will have to get the 10/10. I was surprised about the 2nd one being so naff. You made me laugh with the comment about looking like a complete numpty. You're doing a great job with your videos btw👍
Awesome! Literally tested all the options I have been looking at! From the cheap ebay options that seem like they might do the job to the expensive well known ones too!
I don’t think a diffuser would work particularly well with ring flash Isabel, because the diffuser needs to go between the flash and the subject, and as a ring flash is literally fitted to the lens and fixed, that’s to say, it only points towards the subject, it’s hard to see how it could work. The only way I think you may find a solution is if you tried three of the on lens diffuser, the one with the hole cut into it that fits on the lens. Then, if it were possible to push the ring flash back a little on the lens, it may be possible to fit the diffuser in front, but you’d need three diffusers at different angles to cover the 360 degree aspect of the ring flash. You may be better just buying some light cotton material or a sheet of diffuser gel, and popping that in front of the flash. Hope that helps, and thank you for watching 👏📷😊
Some of the diffusers work as a mini softbox, the ones that fit on the flash head and point towards the subject, but not so much the reflective style, thanks for watching cheers Phil
As long as it doesn't feel as clumsy as a magmod I'm happy :D I'm looking specifically as fill flash in outdoor conditions to remove Harsh specular light from a dress when I can't bring off camera lighting or an assistant
A very nice video. Gives a very good overview of diffuser. I have got the diffuser (White & Silver) which you prefer to keep in your bag. However, I haven't used it much. After watching this video I will seriously try it. I have also the one which you tested first & rated 7/10. Again didn't use it much. I will try that as well. Thanks a lot for the nice Video !👍👍
You’re welcome Sanjay, glad you found it useful. I e been asked to repeat the video outdoors which I’ll do as soon as the sun comes out! Thanks for watching 👏📷😊
Thank you for your lovely comments. I must try the lens mount diffuser for macro, that’s a good idea. And thank you for watching too, I really appreciate it 👏📷😊
Hey Mikey, that’s a good call, the rear of the lens is always smaller so it will be an easier fit. If you’re shooting close ups you might of course run into problems with getting some light drop off due to the lens, but for subjects further away it would work a treat. 👏👏👏
The one at 4:58 is the one I plant to get, impressed with it's results, and nice and easy to carry in field! In fact I plant on getting two of those, and using both at the same time, one for diffusing, one for deflecting.
sooooooo helpful!!

This video was exactly what I needed! Wanted to find a review as well as some sample images using the diffuser that you gave the 10/10 rating for :) Definitely giving it a buy. Found the exact model at $1.95 too! Thank you so much, keep up the great work 👍🏻
Thanks Alan, that really is much appreciated, I’m glad you found the video useful, and thank you for watching 👏📷😊
Great video! Thank you very much! I think I’ll just use the standard diffuser that comes with the flash and just bounce it from the ceiling.
Thank you Hans for your kind comments and thank you for letting me know that the link is broken, I’ll go in and fix that straight away
The first one is good I have it
You needed to test the 2 softboxes in the bounce position EG pointing the flash up like you did with the others.
Thank you, a sheet of A4 paper makes a great diffuser doesn’t it, haha, I love stuff like that 😁
brilliant video just what i needed . i hsd the winner one in mind before watching this . going to purchase it
Thank you for watching, enjoy the diffuser 👏📷😊
Pico z-1 helpful
Hii
Great job on this video mate! Straight forward and informative
Thanks Brad, I appreciate that 👏📷😊
Thank for review sir.
Very useful information, I learned so much about all these types of diffusers. Thank you for sharing!
You’re very welcome Carlos, thank you for watching 📷😊
So very fluent. Thankx for this nice video.
Thank you Jacob, that’s very kind of you to say so, I really appreciate it, cheers 👍🏻📷😊
A really good review, thank you sir
thank u! great and helpful video!
Glad it was helpful!
WOW!!!
Thank you for this video, I'm going to get me the one you rated 10/10 sliver and white, and the softbox.
10/10 is good sir thanks your Exsapels
Thank you for watching 👏📷😊
I took a small tinfoil lid, made 2 slits to put 3/4 inch elastic through and slip the elastic over the flash. Works like your £4.99 reflector. :)
Sounds like a great hack for saving yourself £4.99 👍🏻
Loved this video. I haven't got a flash diffuser yet. I will have to get the 10/10. I was surprised about the 2nd one being so naff. You made me laugh with the comment about looking like a complete numpty.
You're doing a great job with your videos btw👍
Thank you, that’s very kind, glad you enjoyed the video, enjoy the diffuser if you get one, and I’d like to wish you a very happy Christmas 🎄
@@rileyphotos Thanks. Merry Christmas to you too!
Thank you for the test. It helps!
You're welcome!
Awesome! Literally tested all the options I have been looking at! From the cheap ebay options that seem like they might do the job to the expensive well known ones too!
Glad it was helpful, thank you for watching 👏📷😊
Great review, thank you so much.
Thanks for review
Thanks for watching!
Thank Youuuuuuuuu ❤❤❤
You’re welcome
thank you for good provion you are important
What difusser do you recommend for a ring flash as Nissin MF18, for example? Thanks in advance
@@rileyphotos thanks so much for your reply. I think I'm going to give the gel a go. Thanks so much again for your time. ❤️
Can I use as softbox fit it bulb ..
Thanks for watching. I did re-shoot this test outdoors and the results were very different, have a look if you get a few minutes. Cheers Phil 📷😊
Amazing video 👏👏
Thank you! 😃
Lovely video , interesting straight to the point.
👍
Thank you 😊
I think the best choice for defuser it's free Cost 😁😁😁
Excellent video!!
Thank you very much!
7:30 would a shoe stretcher on the hole change anything ?
Yeah, it might do. But so would a pair of scissors 🤣 Thanks for watching, I’m going to try the shoe stretcher and see if it works 👍🏻
Concise and very clear. Brilliant !
Thank you for that very kind comment and thanks for watching 📷😊
A very nice video. Gives a very good overview of diffuser. I have got the diffuser (White & Silver) which you prefer to keep in your bag. However, I haven't used it much. After watching this video I will seriously try it. I have also the one which you tested first & rated 7/10. Again didn't use it much. I will try that as well.
Thanks a lot for the nice Video !👍👍
You’re welcome Sanjay, glad you found it useful. I e been asked to repeat the video outdoors which I’ll do as soon as the sun comes out! Thanks for watching 👏📷😊
@@rileyphotos I am looking forward to watch your new Video ! 👍👍
Nice video! I like the Lens Mount because it's good for closeup photography. I had no idea that there were so many flash diffusers, LOL!
Thank you for your lovely comments. I must try the lens mount diffuser for macro, that’s a good idea. And thank you for watching too, I really appreciate it 👏📷😊
thank u very nuch for the help...
You’re most welcome Andreas 👏📷😊
Can you put the lens mount diffuser on the back of the lens, before you attach it to your camera?
Hey Mikey, that’s a good call, the rear of the lens is always smaller so it will be an easier fit. If you’re shooting close ups you might of course run into problems with getting some light drop off due to the lens, but for subjects further away it would work a treat. 👏👏👏
The one at 4:58 is the one I plant to get, impressed with it's results, and nice and easy to carry in field! In fact I plant on getting two of those, and using both at the same time, one for diffusing, one for deflecting.
I liked that very first one you did, may pick one up.
Go for it Tom. Thanks for watching 👏📷😊
