$30 Optiplex 390 Build! Curious What It's Still Useful For?

  • With many new low end PCs very over priced at local stores, I'm curious where this computer holds it's value at, considering it can still keep up with daily basic tasks such as web browsing or typing a google document. Watching TH-cam videos works without any issues because of the graphics card, so like I said, where does this computer hold it's value, as I spent $27 to make it.
    I hope everyone liked this video! Thank you everyone for watching!!! I love you guys very much. Subscribe for more content as it keeps me motivated and keeps me going.. I only have 5 but my other channel has 159 so were growing slowly! Love you all!!!

    Thank you for the time you spent making this video. I appreciate real people that repurpose electronics. I subscribed and the thumbs up was at 333 and the comments was at 66 so I am the 334th subscriber and the 67th thumbs up. I have the 390 and it was my mothers. Your video motivated me to boost this PC up and try some games with the grandson. The 333 and the 66 are matching winning numbers . To my mom and I. This touched my heart because she is deceased but still showing me her spirit. Thanks Bro. so Awesome. Long live Mom "Joan"✌🙏

      hows that works hows it compare an i5 or i7? EDIT: it seems to crank out just over 6000 passmarks at just under 70 watts which is better than an i7 3xxxT which is a little lower wattage but, notably less performance. so the xeon wins with a slightly higher wattage but notably more performance

    I have used Optiplex 390, 790, and 990 boxes over the last 6 years. I gave away one of my two 390s and the other passed on during a Texas thunderstorm; but all three were dependable (if small) PCs. In fact, they make great "starter PCs" for labs working on installing hardware and OS as they are typically okay with modern Linux distros and up to Windows 10. With something like Splashtop they can be used to simulate remote network management and so on.

      I bought a couple of optiplex 5050 sff to make gaming setups for me and my son, I was actually playing Apex Legends last night. With little adjustments it was pretty good and both my 5050's are running 6th gen i5 6600's. Planning to max them out to i7 7700 when I get a chance. I'm also running Dell oem Radeon RX550 4gb. These things make good setups and I only paid like $50 for them, with a good card more ram and ssd you can make a decent gaming setup for under $200.

    • @brycestechlife

      I definitely think that you’re going to have a very affordable & usable build that should be able to play a good amount of games at decent settings at 1080p of course. The only thing I’d suggest is maybe getting more storage as SSDs are so cheap these days for 1TB, as well as adding another 8gb of ram would make that build a beast. But yes it will run very well for all basic tasks and needs. As well as some gaming I think it will impress you.

    Although you can use it for basic tasks it would be nothing but a potato for any kind of gaming and it's mostly because of the 2nd Gen Core i3 chip. It's going to be a major bottleneck in even E-sports titles. Honestly, anything older than a 4th Gen isn't worth spending the money to upgrade it. I guess if you've got a closet full of legacy parts it would be a good deal. It would be as great system for a child or something like that.

    • @SeeJayPlayGames
      @SeeJayPlayGames หลายเดือนก่อน

      For a one line post, I'm about to write a huge reply with way too much information... oh well...
      Oh no, the ddr4 version of the 1030... yuk... please tell me you didn't buy that "GPU" on purpose... the gddr5 version is roughly 80-100% faster. Also it's possible to find GTX 1050s that fit (I have such a card) which are ~88% faster than the 1030. Also, 1650s are out there in that form factor as well (and another 67% faster. There's also the Quadro P620, as well as the T400/600/1000 cards that are nice options in this form factor. But they're all probably too expensive of an option because NVIDIA. But if you're having a bad time gaming, I highly recommend upgrading that GPU before looking at the CPU. The DDR4 version doesn't even keep up with Ryzen 5 2400G.
      The card I'd actually recommend for small form factor PCs that strikes the perfect balance of low cost and decent performance is the RX 550 4GB. It's at LEAST as fast as GT 1030 GDDR5, has twice the VRAM and also has encoding support. The only reason I have a GTX 1050 is because I found a good deal on it; usually they're unreasonably expensive for SFF. I found one for $100 (on sale, normally $165). The RX 6400 is way faster but also way more expensive (~$130), and also lacks encoding (if you're just gaming, that's not important but if you're trying to do any streaming, video editing/transcoding, then yeah, it's an issue). With the RX 550 you get VCE so at least Handbrake has you covered. Plus you can find these cards on eBay for $40-50. There's also the workstation version of it, the Radeon Pro WX3100, which is just as cheap, but has a blower fan and a cool blue aluminum fan shroud.
      And yes, you can (and should) upgrade the CPU on it. I would recommend going with at least an i5 if not an i7 if you're gaming. The i5-2400 is about $10-15 and the i7-2600 is about $25-30 on eBay (USA). I don't know where you are from but hopefully the prices aren't too different because these processors are OLD. Real old. Like, 2011 old.
      edit: I wrote this before watching the entire video. Going further in, I noticed that the 390 has the PCIe x16 slot in the correct place (this is the last generation of Dell SFF that does; later ones put it right next to the power supply) so it WILL support a two slot wide GPU such as the SFF RTX 3050 6GB or SFF RTX 4060. However, those cards are both several times the cost of the PC itself, and both would be bottlenecked by the CPU (even an i7). Actually come to think of it, the 3050 might not be too bad when paired up with the i7-2600 so that's the only one I'd consider. It'd be like a 1070 or something. But with RTX. Not that you'd want to use RTX with a card that only has 6GB VRAM. But yeah, I'd be interested to see that combination (2600/3050).

      Unfortunately with newer titles, I find it that the instruction sets are no longer supported by the cpu. Like newer games require newer instruction sets that these older CPUs just don’t support. Not to say they are bad or anything there are still many uses and I think everyone should be doing more about our E-waste problem but big box stores always want new and improved. Good pick up
