- This is a 1983 Sony Portable Linear Tracking Turntable. Model PS-F5 It is playing Huey Lewis and the News the Heart of Rock and Roll from their LP Sport. This is a direct connect from the turntable to my camcorder.
Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
(How was this not already here?)
Its the freaking Vinyl Walkman!
Really cool design. Several beautiful Bang & Olufsen Beogram models were linear tracking a decade before this, but they were turnTABLEs.
You don't have to search eBay to enjoy vinyl, get a well-engineered turntable like a Rega. I have a Planar 3 resting on their wall shelf (so no exotic damping platform needed to stop the needle skipping when you jump up and down). Most of my records sounds great on it, and a few sound better than their poorly-remastered CD version.
When Sony was Sony.
+yupimbackk Definitely
Nowadays innovations come in the form of updates
" IT'S A SONY! "
*Do you mean before everybody switched to digital files? Sony missed the boat thinking everyone would go DAT and MiniDisc.*
Couldn't pick a better track for demonstration. Nice show.
Draccyness What's wrong with Huey Lewis And The News?
Sony used to innovate in those days. Very nice. We'll see more of this type of design, now that vinyl is coming back.
Small but mighty - nice example of turntable technology in the 80th !
Great video !
even though im watching this video on low quality .. the sound is just awesome
Vinyls FTW!!
This is insanely beautiful.
Love this song!! I would love to have one of those type of turntables. I've always liked the "different" types of electronic equipment. Records truly are the best in sound
if vinyl became popular again i gurantee more people would actually pay for their music because playing a record is so much more enjoyable than a cd
Fantastic piece of vintage 1980's electronics. CLASSIC ITEM :)
Wow I just got taken back a few decades lol! Haven't heard this song in a while and it sure brings me back
WOW!! What a beautiful record player. Pure Art.
So, you have a fine thing and a super presentation!... I notice that it looks like the Soundburger turntable but upright. So, I have an Audio Technica Soundburger compact portable turntable since 1983 and still working well today in 2011! Japanese firms as Panasonic, Audio Technica, Sony, Sharp and others were the best in touch in the world at the era to unveil futurist creative compact phonographs!
The early '80s were such a great time for innovation in home electronics.I barely remember this sony, but I had a technics SL-5 linear turntable for many years, eventually it had a problem with the cartrige wiring in the tonearm, which was a problem with those.I just didn't get into it to try to fix it,I think I should have though.
That's a cool find though,I'll have to keep an eye open at the garage sales for one of those if they're so valuable.
Wow, outlandish and cool at the same time.
I have a brand new turntable 'cause my old sony broke, got some brand new vinyls ordered too.
Supporting the revolution as much as I can.
I still have one of these.....must be a collectors item !
I remember these as I was in high school in 83! I also remember a friend of mine had a record player that was like mounted on the wall??
The sound is excellent!
Great video ! Great comments about the year . I own a MINT Mitsubishi SS- Z40 vertical turntable stereo system . Good to hear how recording was made . Good editing . You can DJ W/ anything ..... a couple of yrs. ago some Dj's were doing it W/ 2 reel to reel decks (probably just for kicks i'm sure ........tho was common to see a reel to reel in the DJ booth back in the 80's ) Eisenhower High class of 1985 !
You can also notice that lots of older CDs with music transferred from analog source tapes have a really tinny, hollow sound because the remastering processes weren't that great back then. These days, it's usually digital masters to digital copies. It's really more about the experience with vinyl, we play CDs and MP3s as background noise a lot whenever we're doing something else. Listening to LPs and 45s was an active experience that you did to solely listen to the music.
I notice that it looks like the Soundburger turntable but upright. So, I have an Audio Technica Soundburger compact portable turntable since 1983 and still working well today in 2011! I used to do repairs on tape recorders and such and would agree that the unstability in speed is prolly a belt or rubber roller situation. If you clean (or replace if too gummy) the offending part, it would be near perfect!
Great blast from the past in any event; thanks for posting!!
More or less at that time my father gave me a Technics turntable with linear tracking, only that one was a full box instead of this one... I was tired of records by the time the CD came out, so I bought that same record in CD. I don't understand the hoopla about vinyl again, we ditched records so happily back then!!!
The vinyl revival is here. I am thoroughly enjoying it!
Now I want one *g*
I remember these.
Wow! That sounds great! Ahhh, the good old days.
wow this sounds realy good man i thought that for the size that they might have skimped out on the quality but definitely not the case
is a cool design! it is nice because you can store it.
Ahhh im so happy! My Japanese version now works again!
I tried to wiggle the tonearm unit and it helped. My tonearm now moves normaly from the start of a 12inch
I always thought these were cool looking, but wondered about the record capturing all the airborne dust especially if you didn’t return the vinyl back to it’s jacket after playing. Thanks for sharing the video.
beautiful machine and stylish af!
That's crazy! I've never seen one of these before.
Cool design! They should produce them again.
Just got mine from ebay and I'm suddenly back to 1984 wth Akina!!
THE TURNTABLE OF MY DREAMS!!! I never got one of those. ;-(
amazing discover. congrats!
This is surprisingly good.
Records sound good when you have the right equipment and good quality records.
Wow, that record seems to be in really preciously good nick!
Even though I'll have to admit that this sony-thingy is a pretty amazing piece of technology of its time, I'd really prefer to listen to that record playing on some "proper" kit!
HA! This'll be my new IPod! Imagine you some guy walkin down the street jammin to this thing! That's so awesome
I completely agree. Plus the heightened risk of the vinyl warping during play as it is suspended in the air with barely any support.
The days when people respected their equipment. I Still get new records, but my friends look at me like I'm stupid, until I hand them the Headphonts.
Always wanted one of those! Peace.
I am glad you liked the video.
sounds awesome.
God, I wish I had purchased one of those when I had the chance! Peace.
THE GRANDPA OF THE DISCMAN
You really need to check out my 1970s Mitsubishi linear turntable it's fantastic
Yes it does. It plays 45's fine. When you switch it over to 7inch there is a shelf that holds the 45 until you lock the record to the spindle.
I know. I just love the sound.
If I had to convert all of my 45s and LPs to digital, it would take me over a year. I love vinyl and still buy the new releases when I can. I do see that several of the music chains are adding vinyl to their choices. Vinyl really is better for sound.
The lack of excessive rumble was a surprise, but the disc is obviously slipping. I assume you cinch down some sort of hold down to keep the disc stable, but yours is definitely slipping.
It's cute, sounds surprisingly good, but I wouldn't give 300.00 for one, let alone 1000.00, when for that price I can get something high end. They do pop up on eBay sometimes for a reasonable sum.
But I agree, it was innovative in design, and I think it even won an award. Thanks for sharing! Cheers!
very cool, decent sound it seems too :)
O___O. Wow. And the quality is also very high! I didn't knew this was possible.
thats why they sound better. who are you blind from cd's and mp3's comon bro.
Koopa zev I think my comment was not very precise. I was talking about vertical vinyl playback as I'm used to methods perpendicular to gravity. As most of players these days prefer this technique I assumed that that the vertical method isn't good enough until I've seen this.
Slamy's Game Music oh sorry man well get the point so............peace
I love the sound too.
There is a little wow and flutter. I did not notice when I did the video.
OMG!!!
I sooo want one!!!!
Awesome. And I don’t hear any flutter. Maybe I just don’t hear it. Sounds perfect.
wow that sounds seriously good. infact better than cd.
nice vertical turntable the sound is amazing, there´s a little wow and flutter in the audio but its not problem, i don´t know the kind of drive system of this turntable, direct drive motor or belt drive, but a amazing turntable...
wow phenominal sounds quality
I'm amazed at the sound! But, Sony WAS an early innovator of sound reproduction...THANKS!
Ebay and other auction sites are probably your best bet. They typically show up every few months on Ebay in various conditions.
@thedirtydeltas This unit excepts the P-mount standard cartridges and Ortofon makes one. It play vertically fine. On issue. It must have a counter weight when standing up. I have not looked at it closely.
They sure did in those days.
@PsychedelicVideos
1-The tonearm is specially designed to play in the axis point
notice it's at the bottom and not the top and 'floats' and any
vibration or slight knocks are not friends to this arm.
2-the flexible nature of vinyl will skip it when you try to do any thing
(this is why the technics 1200 and others rule, they play vinyl flat
which in turn takes vibration down to the ground, not to the needle)
3-size, height ez tipping
*the direct drive is for accuracy/power only
THAT IS FRICKIN COOL!!
Your right. We have a taste of that now but very little selection.
@delosdmi Yes, you are right! I have a sensitive ear, and this is pretty easy to detect, cause it sounds sour.
best turntable !
That's so cool, and the sound isn't too bad, a little bit of wow and flutter if I'm honest, but it might be because the record may be slightly off centre and not the player itself. If I'm honest though I prefer to play records on a proper size turntable with the lid. I feel the record sticking that far out like that could get knocked which may cause damage to the record or player. Interesting audio item though, thanks for sharing.
Sony didn't invent the cd, James Russell invented the compact disk in 1965. James Russell was granted a total of 22 patents for various elements of his compact disk system. Sony and Philips collaborated to produce a standard format and related player technology which was made commercially available in 1982.
Thank you. Very interesting.
Thank you. Very interesting.
Yes it plays 45's. You can select the size and speed on the side of the unit. You can see those swiches on the side PS-F5 in the video at about 2 min 44 sec.
GOOD SONG!!!
It ueses a needle. You can open the case and replace them. Directions are in the manual.
Wow! I mean, WOW and FLUTTER :) Must have been better back then!
Yea there is a wow and flutter issue. Someday I plan to do another video on the same record.
Yes it has a preamp too.
Great thing also it has it's own preamp from phono level. Just wish it had better jacks than 3.5mm.
The PS-F5 is a unique player. Thanks for this great example, it sounds amazing! Does it use a ceramic or magnetic cartridge?
Looks like it works well, as long as the record isn't warped.
Yea there is a wow and flutter issue. Someday I plan to do another video on the same record.
@radiotubes No. The cover comes off and you can change it out the needle easly.
Thanks.
@thedirtydeltas I hear ya and woudl not rule that out, but if you've ever played a warped record, the pitch is still usually fine (unless it rubs on something -- then you are right, the warp could cause a wobble, etc).
hewy lewis and the news-The Heart Of Rock And Roll 1:31
With a built-in preamp too.
It does not do track searching.
You have to do it manually on the PS-F5.
On the front panel you press the lift/drop tone arm button, then press the arrow buttons to move the tone arm to the correct spot (in this case track 3), then press lift/drop button again and you have track three playing.
Although I LOVE the monolith look, this seems like more of a fun show piece than a serious turntable. The drive definitely seems to be having trouble maintaining speed, but this may be age-related. I was too young back then to have ever seen a new one in action.
Yea there is a wow and flutter issue. Someday I plan to do another video on the same record.
The artifacts you're hearing are results from MPEG compression that TH-cam imposes on every video on their site.
they need to re release this thing!!
You are welcome.
I hear it too.. The record may be getting hung up on something or maybe the belt's slipping? It seems to get better later in the song.
The initial audio quality seemed good, although hard to tell with digital compression here on TH-cam, i can hear the speed instability and can only assume that this would be harder on the record than a traditional turntable. However, nifty portable player I will add.
Yea there is a wow and flutter issue. Someday I plan to do another video on the same record.
I think this should be called a record player, not a turntable, mainly because, uh, there's no table, or at least no requirement of gravity. That's so cool. Any info on how much stylus pressure it uses?
Cool.
It should be> I have not put mine though the paces because it is a collectors item and I tend to keep it in the box.
There’s a bit of Wow and Flutter!
Correct! ...for a second I couldn't quite put my finger on it...what sounded odd I mean. But that's it.
@PsychedelicVideos I sopose you can rig of a slip mat to do it. I think a standard turntable would be easier and less expensive. These units sell for around $300 working in poor condition and mint in box $1000.
Good, but a bit of sibilance on the high frequencies - but good quirky fun!
