  • The Sani Pass between Lesotho and South Africa is a must-do for anyone wanting to truly experience off-roading in Southern Africa. Nicole and I manage to make it up despite forgetting our passports, and almost don't make it back into South Africa!

    Those border patrol officers are fantastic. They insisted that my mate rode his motorbike up to the top with me, even though he’d forgotten his passport. He stopped a couple of hundred metres before the top border post, and I was going to go and get us a couple of beers. The officers at the top asked why my mate was waiting, so I told them he’d forgotten his passport. They said no problem, he can join me for a beer, and he did 😊

Doen so voort 👌

    Did the Sani Pass in July and the mountain was adorned by snow and of course the famous frozen waterfall. The highlight of the trip was the Highest Pub in Africa and the cultural visit to the local village with warm traditional brewed beer and bread was a nice touch to the trip. It is a must-do trip for all thrill seekers.

    I actually also went up Sani pass after staying at the resort. I also forgot my passport at home and I went up there with my 2.4 gd 6 Hilux, 2x4, might I add. There were a few sketchy moments as there was also ice at the top, but I made it. The Lesotho border also let me go up to the highest pub in Africa for a drink or four🤣🤣🤣 I had some OBS and read a book from their library and after a few hours I headed back down. It was a stunning drive

    Had a similar situation earlier this year when I went up the pass. My friend whom I was travelling with did not have their passport. I went up to the office, and one of the officials recognized me from a previous visit. He had questioned me about my car the first time I went up the pass, saying he had never seen a 4x4 that looked like a regular hatchback (I drive a '18 Renault Duster 4WD). The officials let us through (we were also very friendly and asked very nicely), and we weren't going to cross into Lesotho. When we went, the top 3/4 of the mountains were covered in snow and ice, which made for great scenery and exciting driving! This was towards the end of May this year.

    Fascinating account of Sani. Extreme nature and humanity woven together. I am torn between the two ideas of paving the road versus keeping it as it is. For Lesotho the road is a commercially artery linking KZN industrial and commercial towns to Mokhotlong. For that purpose it must be paved as the Lesotho side is already paved. On the other hand, paving would completely take away the exhilaration that comes with. Do you think two roads could work-one for commercial purposes and the other for off-road and snow fanatics?

    Absolutely amazing pass to ride. Did this in 2014 and it was just like you experienced it. We slept at the highest pub in Africa. Woke up the next morning and everything was white with snow. Unbelievable experience.

    from the foothills of the mountains that form the Sani pass is Lesotho. as soon as you cross the SA border post you are in Lesotho. the positioning of the Lesotho border post office is simply strategic; also serves as a look out for both posts, or at least that's the initial rationale). as is with the Mohokare river, its a Lesotho feature.

    Very nice vid thanks! Must watch some more of your channel. I went up the pass in Sept 2016 after a night of snow. As a relatively new 4x4 driver I was thankful I had learned my vehicle enough by that point to handle the steep gradients, snow and slush…could have gone very wrong.

    Generally I find if you are friendly and do not rattle the customs, they can be very helpful. I went up the Sani Pass in 2000 at the spur of thr moment. They issued me with a temporary one day passport and I drove to the top and had my beer at the chalet and drove down. My vehicle, Mazda 323 1500 sedan, no escort, not kidding.

    Hi Matt, can you maybe give an indication on your fuel consumption for the whole trip, and where can you fill up or do you have to take extra fuel?

    • @mattdubber
      @mattdubber  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a long range tank, so I can get over 1000km on a tank. Fuel consumption is around 11L/100km

    • @robbrent
      @robbrent ปีที่แล้ว

      Driving from the nearest petrol station in Himeville to the top of the pass and back down again to the same petrol station is less than 100 km and on through Lesotho to get out at the northern border post into the Free State is easily achievable on a tank of fuel, especially now with the Chinese tarred road all the way through. Well worth the trip and there are a few accommodation options on the main road through Lesotho.
