That sounds lovely. I would love to join but not sure yet if I am able to. Hopefully there is a spot left closer to the date! Your videos are so beautiful. 🌄
Thank you Harmen for posting this beautiful video of your spectacular walk….. having visited South Africa In 1981 it reminded of what an incredibly beautiful country I travelled around
I want everyone to know that this is Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, not Cape Town. Tourists seem to go to Cape Town, and not to realise that we have a vast country with diverse beauty. The Drakensberg mountain range is so majestic. Take the time to visit.
I share the same sentiment. eacH AND every time I meet people from other countries or on these online meetings- they all be like "I want to come visit SA- I want to go to Cape Town"😔😔😔😔😔😔
Absolutely and just to add. Cape Town is in the Western Cape province on the South western part of the country. Kwa-Zulu is on the Eastern coast. It's the most majestic landscape and it's sheer size is incredible. It's largest point when inclusive of Lesotho is 3/4 the size of England and Wales combined. The length runs from half way the length of the Eastern Cape, which is a province between the Western Cape and Kwa-zulu Natal , runs up into another province above Kwa-Zulu Natal called Mpumalanga. Top to bottom is close on 950kms / 600 miles in length. I promise you won't be disappointed in coming to the Drakensburg.
The quality of your product is unmatched... and again, with Kraig Adams out there that's really saying something. Your artistic and soulful touch is so peaceful to watch and I just seriously can't say enough good things about your videos. I'm absolutely shocked this doesn't have a million views. This looked like a once in a lifetime journey and please please do produce more. I will be watching everything.
Young man. This was an extraordinary piece of film making. Prize winning in fact. Thank you for making this wonderful documentary. Your editing skills are so impressive and the story seamless. And the fact that you literally climbed the Drakensberg 3 times to make this beautiful piece makes it even more impressive. I have walked the Drakensberg. And seen some of its beauty. But never quite like you have portrayed it. This is a masterpiece. Remarkable. Well done - and thank you
This is by far the most beautiful video I've seen on the internet. I have a very strong connection with the Drakensberg mountain. It is my healing and my happy place. Your video did justice (no what word is better than justice) to this majestic Dragon's Back. The locals call it Ukhahlamba mean the Barrier Of Spears. ❤❤❤❤
Hope you enjoy(ed) this one! Here are some fun facts: 1:35 All shots are my own. Before and after the hike I stayed in Dinokeng Game Reserve just north of Pretoria. Special place. 6:09 When I hiked here I was like 'Wow, super windy here'. That night I found out it is called Windy Gap. (; 8:47 The perfect storm. The best show nature has ever thrown me. For hours on end thunder and lighting that slowly moved away from the mountain.s 16:10 I almost lost my drone here! I ignored the auto return to home because of low battery to get that one last shot. It then went into auto-landing without the option to cancel it. And I had no idea where it was! I solely relied on the compass and gps map to get it back. Just a minute after landing massive winds and rain moved in. Very very lucky. 18:55 This guy was totally stealth! I didn't notice him until he was right next to me. Quite an adrenaline moment. 21:21 Just like the night at 37:00 I made 'equipment drops' at night, putting most of my valuables in waterproof bags and hidding them from the tent. I didn't feel quite save there. 26:35 This was a special part of the hike. Those three girls hiked with me for 6km, on their way to their grandparents. 32:00 The thoughest hiking day I've ever done. Bushwacking for 12 hours, no breaks, drank at least 20 liters of water. Looked for a camping spot for hours, but nothing was flat or even close to camping. Then it got dark and foggy, I headed up the wrong valley and was about to just roll out my sleeping bag on some rocks and prepare for a night without sleep when I spotted that virgin cave. Then I had to look for water in the dark and fog. Probably the most dangerous experience so far, unable (unwanting) to film any of that. 38:50 I actually felt terrible those days. Unable to eat, waking up at night with stomach cramps, and just tired all the time. Filming in those situations is the hardest. 40:15 Meet my dad! I've never backpacked with someone before, so special to do it with my dad. And shoutout to him at age 60+!
Hello harmen, I found your channel today and I love how you try to transmit that magic that nature makes us feel when you are alone in the middle of it, your very unique videos are beautiful, keep it up. I hope that one day you come to see the landscapes of southern Spain, they are very unique and precious, great mountains with views of the sea and Morocco.
Were the stomach cramps from the water? I know the katadyn doesn't get rid of viruses in water since it's a filter vs a purifier. That's an unprecedented amount of water in a day. I've never heard anything like it. I get it though. A trip I did, I drank 8 liters in a day and was still very much so dehydrated.
Making me very homesick with this film. SA still has some of the best people and nature in the world, without a doubt. Counting down the days until I move back.

This is sublime. Not only hiking for 7 days in vast wilderness, but also being a filmmaker with amazing composition. I’ll be definitely watching more of these in the future
Every time my mom and I sit down to watch one of your videos, my mom is always concerned about you. I have to reassure her that Harmen is safe at home hence he uploaded his adventures for us to see. This was truely a masterpiece. Enjoyed every second of it and even got teary eyed. The shot with the women and one of them giggled made us giggle. Truely truely amazing. We'll be watching and rewatching this for a long time. Like all of your other videos. Best of luck Harmen. You're a great athlete and a filmmaker.

As a south african living in europe, this brings me back to my youth going to drakensberg and dragons peak, no place on earth like SA. No sunrise and sunset quite like in SA, rolling thunder and lightning storms that shake the earth. Would love to get back to my roots and hike this beautiful, stunning landscape. Amazing video and experience, godbless
This takes me back to a hike I did with my younger brother, many years ago...a 5 day hike in winter..snow on the footpaths.. swimming in very cold streams. Great memories. Thank you.
Having recently returned from spending 18 months living in Lesotho with challenging experiences, this video has a beautiful peaceful calming effect on my frayed nerves from that extended visit. You've captured the spirit of the people and extraordinary scenery from Mweni to Tugela and Sentinel. AS others here have already said, you've shared your wonderful adventure in silence except for sounds of rain wind and water flowing off those mountains, and the youful chuckles and chatter of young Basotho herdsmen & Zulu women . Bravo Harmen.
I honestly don't know which of your films is my favorite, but I just finished this one and was deeply moved by it. I love mountains and I love flying. Before I got sick, I was learning to hang glide, so seeing the aerial shots among clouds and mountains that you produce always takes my breath away. Your work is absolutely exquisite, and I thank you so, *so* much for what you do. 🙏
Ten Basic Rules of Mountain Safety (SOUTH AFRICAN NATION PARKS) - Don’t hike alone; four is the ideal number. - Choose your route carefully and stick to it. Allow yourself enough time - start early. Inform someone of your route and what time you’re expected back. - Choose a hike leader and walk at the pace of the slowest member. - If lost - don’t split up. Rather try to retrace your steps. Remember that climbing down is more difficult than climbing up. - Always take waterproof clothing, even in mid-summer, and wear walking shoes or hiking boots. Wear a hat or cap and sun block in summer. Weather changes rapidly. - If lost or forced to stop because of bad weather, stay together and remain in one place. Find the closest shelter from wind and rain. - In case of injury, take time to assess the situation. Then send two people for help and let the third remain with the injured person. If possible, mark the position on a map and send it with those going for help. - Stick to well-used paths, which will be indicated on the Park's hiking map and read the warnings on this map. Don’t take shortcuts and especially don’t wander into ravines. - Always take enough water, especially in summer, and food in case of a delay. Watch the weather and time, and turn back before you start running late or if bad weather threatens. - Take a fully-charged cellphone. Some parts of the Park do not have cell phone reception, but you will always be able to reach a place where you can use a cell phone more quickly than you’ll get to a landline.
@@MrsPillowsMostly a matter of safety in SA. Its not unheard of for line hikers to be set upon by either a gang or wanderers. Against the Lesotho border in the mountains (where he was hiking here) there have been several bad encounters for example.
To be honest, I never thought about South Africa being that beautiful and vibrant . Such a magical place. Also, you have fantastic filming skills, i really appreciate this.
South Africa has a bit of everything to offer when it comes to nature... vast mountain ranges and landscapes, desert, coastlines and beaches as well as wildlife. Pity the bad press overshadows what an absolute gem it is
Exceptional once again. I can easily see you making a living from this, cinematography and storytelling is spot-on and no competition to others. Go for it!
My heart slows down, my breathing slows, my mind goes empty just to make space to absorb all I see in the video. Thank you. That happens while watching any of your videos. You make me fall in love with this planet again and again. ❤🌍🌸
This should be on the big screen!! Absolutely breathtaking! Especially loved how the people were in awe of you & really appreciated their treats. The lightning show from your first cave camp was spectacular! Will have to watch many more times 🙋🏼♀️👍🏻🇺🇸⛰
By far the best film of the Drakensberg I've ever seen. It should be in theaters the world over. I really wish I had done more hiking in those mountains when I was younger.
What a hike! More so, what a beautifully shot video footage of your 7-day trek in the Drakensberg! It is aesthetically mesmerizing and captivating to the eye, keeping me glued to the TV and prompting countless questions about my own country, South Africa. Having been abroad teaching English and longing to return home, this video made me feel homesick. Your shots of the Basotho people and the shepherds resonated deeply with me, as I too am Sotho, and it brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for this!
This made me teary-eyed….with happy tears. It is difficult to portray the emotion and awe experienced when hiking the majestic Drakensberg. You are a gifted film maker and this is an exquisite piece of work and you did exactly that. My husband and I, together with dear friends, have traversed different stretches of the Drakensberg escarpment over many years between the chain ladders at Mont-aux-Sources and Langilabalele pass at Giant’s Castle. Those were some of the most memorable times of our lives, especially since my husband and I cannot do it anymore. Thank you for taking us right back being up in the High Berg and evoking all the emotion and wonderful memories of times well spent.
hello from Ukraine! I really love your video style, I know a lot of people who do this but you are the best bro. Thank you for the kindness you bring to the world. there should be more people in our world who appreciate nature. 🤗
As an expat who grew up close to the mountains, this made me cry. This is by far the best footage I have ever seen of The Berg. Thank you for making this.
I think this is now my favourite film about my favourite place on earth!!! The grandeur of the Drakensberg is wonderfully captured by your cinematography. My only wish is that you had made the movie longer. I didn't want it to end. I'll be watching this many times. Thank you for sharing.
Went to the Drakensbergen as well, as a tourist in a Jeep to Lesotho and the Highest Pub of the Worrld. Nature is very overwelming and beautifull. Thank you for bringing the memories back. The shots are great enjoyed every moment of this video.❤❤❤
Beautiful. Serine. Outstanding. It captures perfectly the magic of a 7 day hike. And the natural beauty of the magnificent Drakensburg. Five star. Brings back so many memories.
This is probably my favorite hiking video of all the ones that I've seen on TH-cam. The photography and cinematography is excellent, the scenery is amazing, and I love the footage of the residents of that area. Well done!
Absolute shivers down my spine on some shots and I love that you met your dad out there. What an unforgettable experience. I appreciate the effort and dedication this took to plan, do, shoot and edit. The drone shots are magnificent. Bravo!
Our deepest admiration and appreciation for these noble videos. Yes, I would describe them as noble. They expose us to the silent, contemplative beauty that pervades this universe that we're immersed in. Thank you.
Nice loadout...Big Agnes and Solomon are two of my fave brands. I was in Lesotho in 1983 and 1984 hiking large areas of it with my Dad, who has long since passed. When I saw the familiar wildflowers, the Basotho shepherd boys who always come asking...and the familiarity of the landscape and mud huts....wow the memories come flooding back. At that time Toto's "Africa" song was everywhere, and it was magical that it coincided with my stay in Lesotho. Enjoy your Dad as long as you can...every minute is a blessing.
Purley epic the hike of a lifetime. The cinematography is inspiring you need to add that qualification to your already impressive résumé. Thank you for taking us along.
Hello Harmen. I live in the Uk now, but grew up in South Africa, living there until 2001. During the 80s and 90s myself and a group of friends would hike regularly in the Drakensberg, mainly in the areas featured in your film. Not having been back there now for well over 20 years, I must say how nostalgic this makes me feel. Interestingly, we used to avoid the Mnweni area, hiking over the top between the Amphitheater and Cathedral Peak, but never down into the valleys there. Watching your film makes me think that we really missed out as that area looks like an absolute gem. Thank you for a wonderful trip down memory lane with your magnificent film. Chris
This is the best hiking video I have ever watched. Thanks for taking us through the journey and I felt like I hiked the whole thing with you. You are absolutely gifted and the taste in the choice of music, the angle from which you captured the views are just magnificent. I wish I could go on one of the hikes with you! Hiking is an absolute joy!
Been waiting for this version all week, and it did not disappoint! Harmen you are a master story teller and it reflects beautifully in this version of your adventure in The Drakensberg! I will be watching this over and over again while I plan my own trip to South Africa, excited for what you share with us next!
I’m presently reading a book regarding a soldier who was involved in activities in the Drakensberg back in the early 80’s. Your amazing footage of this remarkable region has given me a better understanding of his story. What magnificent country and you have done it proud with a truly remarkable film. Thank you 🙏
Thank you. My Dad and I used to hike the Drakensburg all the time. He's passed away almost 10 years now. I felt him close to me when I watched you and and your dad. So special. Treasure every second you have with him.
This deserves millions of views. Too good, every landscape and scene was a masterpiece. Your best work by a lot and it really raises the standard for these types of videos.
You have reawakened my yearning for the mountains of my country. Thank you for your beautiful portrayal. Those towering basalt walls just rend my heart with longing
I have now seen both, this full version, and the shorter one of "The Drakensberg". I'm lacking superlatives that would describe well enough my feelings. Both versions are the best hiking or nature videos I've ever seen, in TH-cam or elsewhere. Outstanding cinematography, every scene so complete, the beauty, and on the other hand - the hiking challanges of the area so well presented, all those breath-taking drone sequences, and all the trouble you have seen to get that splendid material, and such an outstanding result of editing. Ýou truly are very, very talented, Harmen. Heartfelt thanks for these two wonderful visual experiences!
The most relaxing 40 minutes I’ve enjoyed in forever. So beautiful and the story is so well told. Thank you for taking us on that journey with you and the escapism experienced in my living room. X
Thank you Harmen. This is the best hiking video I have watched in TH-cam. This trek is very cool and the film is perfect. Actually, I watched the full film with my son, who is 13y old. We replayed many times to catch the details. He told me that he wants to do this hike when he grows up. Thank you. We enjoyed your film.
I have watched the previous one and this full version. These videos tell a lot. Your spirit and effort, I can see through your videos. I can feel that there is no net can ensnare us from such an incredible journey. We only need to be brave to conquer our fear, ego, and anger. I love your videos so much. I think no words can describe how much these videos mean to me. I wish someday I can explore my earth like you do. I can't wait to interact with people around the world and being one with nature.
Why is it so good, man? The landscape and your video. Drone shots, the pans, even that random horseman you met on day three. Everything is so aesthetically pleasing.
I don't know why not as many people are watching your videos. This should have million viewers. I don't usually watch, read hardly anything more than twice but I did with this video and I may with other videos of yours. I noticed how you capture what lights does to a scenery, wild flowers many others don't pay attention to, magnificent pictures and its scale... so breath taking. Thank you for this longer version of film as well. Very impressive!!
This is one of the most beautiful spectacular and unseen part of the Drakensberg mountain range. Well done on making of this video. Makes us proud to be South African
It's absolutely my biggest dream to do this kind of long trips. I just went on weekend trips without camping in the mountains but sleeping in a car and being at the top of the mountain at sunrise. You inspired me so much, big respect for this amazing tour and footage!

Good advice!
Hiking alone is the best. Wasn't he alone?
@@MrsPillowsMostly a matter of safety in SA. Its not unheard of for line hikers to be set upon by either a gang or wanderers. Against the Lesotho border in the mountains (where he was hiking here) there have been several bad encounters for example.
Who set those rules?
But he is alone the entire film. You are just a scare monger
Thanks for bringing up precious memories with your video. South Africa is an extraordinary country and will forever have a place in my heart.
Thank you too. It surely is an amazing place.
Thanks for bringing up precious memories with your video. South Africa is an extraordinary country and will forever have a place in my heart.
Go for it!
I feel humbled, thanks a lot. (:
Englizy hi.
Thank you so much!!
@@en-garde2258 yes 👍🏻
By far the best film of the Drakensberg I've ever seen. It should be in theaters the world over. I really wish I had done more hiking in those mountains when I was younger.
You captured my home perfectly, great angles and the editing is remarkable ... South Africa, my beautiful land❤
Dear Lord, absolutely breathtaking landscapes. That was one of the most enjoyable videos I have seen in a very long, long time.
There is no amount of views that can justify the effort this gentleman put in this video. I bow to you my friend!!!
Loooove the peaceful quietness and presence of what you share with us ♥️ a true legacy to your children✨
hello from Ukraine! I really love your video style, I know a lot of people who do this but you are the best bro. Thank you for the kindness you bring to the world. there should be more people in our world who appreciate nature. 🤗
Hi there Ukraine! Much appreciated, thank you!
@@en-garde2258 thank you brother! ✌
As an expat who grew up close to the mountains, this made me cry. This is by far the best footage I have ever seen of The Berg. Thank you for making this.
What An emotionally beautiful story without words!
Thank you!
God..the beauty..the simplicity. I long for this simple life. Thank you for the video ❤
What an awesome experience it must have been 😊 my beautiful country 🇿🇦
I think this is now my favourite film about my favourite place on earth!!! The grandeur of the Drakensberg is wonderfully captured by your cinematography. My only wish is that you had made the movie longer. I didn't want it to end. I'll be watching this many times. Thank you for sharing.
I like that. Thank you so much (:
Went to the Drakensbergen as well, as a tourist in a Jeep to Lesotho and the Highest Pub of the Worrld. Nature is very overwelming and beautifull. Thank you for bringing the memories back. The shots are great enjoyed every moment of this video.❤❤❤
And again I am so impressed with you. What a gift you have. So beautiful to watch.
Bedankt Ellen! (:
South Africa is one beautiful place
Dude such a magical film and best shots I’ve ever seen of Drakensberg! Really making me want to go hiking there
Thank you!! It’s my pleasure
Beautiful. Serine. Outstanding.
It captures perfectly the magic of a 7 day hike. And the natural beauty of the magnificent Drakensburg.
Five star.
Brings back so many memories.
Fantastic film - thank you so much for sharing it. Cheers from Germany.
Thank you very much!
Best hiking film Ive ever seen .Thank you.✌❤
Thank you Dave! :D
I used to live there years back as a shepherd, exceptional content, really enjoyed it.
Awesome, thank you!
I love my country more than anyone can ever understand, my beautiful home of South Africa.. Thank you kindly for showing what we are so proud of ...
This is probably my favorite hiking video of all the ones that I've seen on TH-cam. The photography and cinematography is excellent, the scenery is amazing, and I love the footage of the residents of that area. Well done!
Wow, thanks!
This is spectacular. I travel to Southern Africa countries and Lesothos is far most the amazing country to experience nature!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Absolute shivers down my spine on some shots and I love that you met your dad out there. What an unforgettable experience. I appreciate the effort and dedication this took to plan, do, shoot and edit. The drone shots are magnificent. Bravo!
Thanks a lot! (:
Magnificent country. thanks for sharing. Greetings from Aus
Our deepest admiration and appreciation for these noble videos. Yes, I would describe them as noble. They expose us to the silent, contemplative beauty that pervades this universe that we're immersed in. Thank you.
Thank you kindly
Wow, thanks!
Chris
Things to note: The dogs are well looked after. The places are clean, with no rubbish lying around. Congratulations.
Saudações do 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Such a wonderful video .. thank you so much for sharing your journey…I just did not know Africa was so beautiful but thanks to you I now know😊
Unglaublich schöne Bilder von Landschaften und Menschen.Spektakulär gefilmt und einfühlsam musikalisch untermalt.Danke Harmen
Vielen Dank!
Best film in my mind.
Wow, thanks!
I love everything about this video 😭
Been waiting for this version all week, and it did not disappoint! Harmen you are a master story teller and it reflects beautifully in this version of your adventure in The Drakensberg! I will be watching this over and over again while I plan my own trip to South Africa, excited for what you share with us next!
Thank you Christopher! Hope you’ll enjoy it just as much as I did.
I’m presently reading a book regarding a soldier who was involved in activities in the Drakensberg back in the early 80’s.
Your amazing footage of this remarkable region has given me a better understanding of his story.
What magnificent country and you have done it proud with a truly remarkable film.
Thank you 🙏
This is such an amazing video. Really capturing the beauty of South Africa and its people!
What an incredible experience you've shared. Absolutely gorgeous mountains & first rate filming.
This is one the best videos I've ever watched. Honestly! Beauty at its finest, the raw power of the mighty Drakensberg. Our beautiful South Africa 🇿🇦
Hi Paula. Thanks for your comment! One comment says so much more than a thousand views, especially yours. Loved reading it. Thanks! ☺️
@@HarmenHoek Your masterpiece touched my heart and my soul.
I couldn’t agree with this comment more
That intro is nothing short of epic! The filming, the music, the timing...just perfect! Thank you!!
The most relaxing 40 minutes I’ve enjoyed in forever. So beautiful and the story is so well told. Thank you for taking us on that journey with you and the escapism experienced in my living room. X
Thank you!
Bedankt
Jou films ontroeren me wel hoor Harmen, wat een fantastische wereld laat je ons zien. Ik ben een fan van jou werk.
Just wow… amazing. Hope life returns you all this hard work with all your wishes and needs. Greetings from Barcelona
Muchas gracias por tu comentario!
I've never been so envious and grateful at the same time. Thank you for sharing this with us all.
First time that I have broke into tears just by watching a hiking video. Gorgeous. Thank you!
Thank you Jian! I still get goosebumps with particular sections, even though I've seen it a million times.
Your content is so peacefull and nice, thanks for doing this. I can appreciate it.
Thank you Yan, and thank you son of Yan! Great to hear you liked it! Hope you get a chance to go out in this world and explote. All the best!
Thanks!
Thank you so much 🙂 Comments like these mean a lot to me. Hope you get a chance to see some of this amazing planet too. All the best!
I have been hiking over 20 years and seen so many hikers but he is my only role model for me now!!
Thats really kind (:
There is something very touching about this adventure, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you too!
I watch a lot of these types of videos. This is world class. And when I saw that sunrise, it brought tears to my eyes.
Thanks!
A stunningly beautiful production, Herman, capturing your wonderful Drakenberg experience so perfectly. ♥️Love and best wishes from Cape Town.🇿🇦
Many thanks!
Love the thunderstorms. I wished more of that was included in this video especially with Spatial Audio.
This is absolutely stunning 😍 so peaceful and yet very engaging. The storms looked spectacular too. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Thanks for visiting
Why is it so good, man? The landscape and your video. Drone shots, the pans, even that random horseman you met on day three. Everything is so aesthetically pleasing.
This film is incredible! what a view and cinematography. The way you put it is very tasteful. Fellow silent hiker here!
Thank you Neil!
such an amazing production. the little details such as rain on the tent made me feel like im there! such a great job with sound too.
Thank you! I love capturing the details, because the details make each place so unique.
You can do it! Thanks
@@HarmenHoek hey Harmen. I would love to go hiking in South America. I never hiked like that. Looking for something exiting in my life. Will be taking 1 year off from regular lifestyle to travel the world. What would be your advice where to start. I’m leaving in Florida. Thank you for any advice. Kasia
Beautiful and so sacred. You can sense the spirit of peace and calm, the southern African spirit
