Reversing a Cessna Caravan, and a short flight in the C208

  • A short flight in the Cessna C208B Grand Caravan.
I run through how to do the start up (minus when the telephone rang), first flight of the day checks, pre-takeoff checks, then the circuit join at the other end, landing, and a reverse park for traffic (not something I do regularly so something interesting).
Reversing a Cessna Caravan has to be done very cautiously because the slightest touch on the brakes will put it on its tail, not something I recommend without having done training on it!

It’s got some lovely scenery doesn’t it! The apron has recently had a makeover and increased in size.

Thanks mate. I'm not too sure! It had them when we bought it 5 or 6 years ago. They are great though!

What is the purpose of closing both fuel tanks? Wouldn't closing one prevent cross feeding

In theory yes, but they all seem to still trickle across if both aren’t turned off!

Just wondering how old is your caravan? Nice looking bit of gear.

She’s a 1995 model this one, but since been retrofitted with the G600 PFD’s and touchscreen GPS’s, only with about 2400 hours total time.

can you pass me the list of procedures and limitations of the c208 please

Regarding reversing and dropping the tail, why didn't Cessna mount the main gear struts about a meter further aft? There's a bit of a gap between the struts and the rear doors, so it looks like they had room.
Or would that short of a change in fulcrum position not even matter? Would it still tip just as easily?

It’s not really meant to be reversed. There’s no approved procedure for it in the POH and it states that reverse should be discontinued below 25 Knots to prevent prop erosion.
I’ve backed it up and you simply have to be careful. Slowly, never with a load in the back, and feet off the brakes-use forward thrust to bring it to a halt.

Don't use the inertial seperator on the ground. The prop kicks up dirt, dust and other foreign matter that can be ingested by the by-pass on the left side of the cowling. The inertial separator really doesn't do its job till at least 40 knots or so.
I flew for two FedEx 208 operators in the US and if you had been seen backing a Caravan up you would have been fired immediately. Stupid idea.

Because it's easy to damage the airplane when doing so, especially if you don't have a couple of people to monitor what your doing. @@jaspergwenzi8818

The contraction of you are is you're. Not your.
As in: _you're_ really riding this guy's dick.
