My favorite thing about Asta and Yuno is that once in a while, they trash talk each other (to the other's face), but probably only as a way of motivating the other to work harder, but they absolutely won't stand by and let anyone else talk bad about the other.

Light isn't an Antagonist. He's a Villain.
Light is the main character, that makes him the protagonist, regardless of morality, and L opposes him, which makes him an antagonist, regardless of morality.

Zoro is also the only crew member besides Franky and Usopp(as a joke) who other characters actively recognize could lead their own crew. Also Zoro is just a natural foil to Luffy. Sharp edges cut rubber..

Been a while since I read Death Note, but I'm pretty sure that Light didn't trade half of his life for the Shinigami's Eyes. Misa did, and it was the Shinigami that was connected to Misa that killed L. It was planned by Light, since he knew that said Shinigami wouldn't let Misa come to harm. But Light didn't _directly_ kill L with the Death Note.

I know you don’t like Sasuke and its fine you feel that way, but for what reason do you like Vegeta more when they share a lot in common. Both of them were initially stronger then the protagonist and got upset when they were surpassed by them. Both of them wanted revenge against those who wiped out their kin and had their goals change multiple times in the series. Both of them were considered genius prodigies with incredible talent. Both of them are not present for large chunks of the series. Both of them had intentions at one point or the other to kill the protagonist and did morally wrong things. Vegeta in fact killed main cast members and millions+ more of people, even killing people during the Buu arc when he had already joined the Z-fighterz. We all mostly forgive Vegeta and love him, but he still was a villain and acted villainously and selflessly for most of DBZ even when he had switched sides. I think the reason you dislike Sasuke is because Sasuke had a negative character arc going from hero to villain and on the other hand you like Vegeta because he had a positive character arc( with some lapses and regression) from villain to hero. Both Sasuke and Vegeta are in the same place now as heroes with goals of protecting their families and friends, so I’m curious to hear your thoughts on the characters in relation to one another.

Sasuke has an evolving ideology, because he has character development, which is really important for the themes of Naruto. I don’t know how you say he’s one note then mention that he evolves and changes.
It’s how he is pretty one note and doesn’t do much in terms of development and when he does it kinda out of nowhere or we don’t see the journey for the most part and it’s in how he changes not that he doesn’t and he can still be one note even if that note might change pitch every now and then
Sasuke is an easily manipulated blank canvas. He falls for EVERYTHING bc he stands for absolutely nothing but personal revenge. He comes off as an indecisive puppet of whom I find incredibly annoying to the point of hatred.

If you stay the same for years and then change 5 times in like a week/month or so that is not character devolvement that is bad writing. It could have been good character development if got say 5-10 episodes of him being in each different mindset. He went from saving the world to killing naruto to being okay again in a like a freaking hour.

I love the way you talked about Killua, he’s been my favorite character since the very beginning of the show. The most chilling part to me was when Kill knocked Gon out cold after Pitou showed up, he loves Gon so much and would do anything to protect him to the point of harming him to get him out of harms way😂 also love the long ranty videos!
Love that scene also. Killua hitting Gon, gave me an idea of where to rank the royal guards. I understood that they were all Netero level since Kite isn't a scrub and is at a Spider Level.

I always loved kuwabara in yyh relationship to yusuke being the only protag whos fully human he constantly reminds yusuke of his humanity and is the heart of the show
I was really hoping kuwabara showed up ok this list too actually. He's the perfect pair for Yusuke. Especially in the tournament when kuwabara pretends to die so Yusuke snaps out of it and fights toguro
Wano in my opinion certainly puts zoro higher. But I would argue that zoro is the only one in one piece you can apply this to except for maybe cobi but that is a stretch.
He is the vice captain, when luffy falters zoro takes command, when luffy turns away from his dream for whatever reason zoro will give up his dream for luffy's
He not the secondary main character kobey is. If you don't think that then just remember that zoro, and sanji are both the wings of the pirate king ( luffy) so that mean that sanji would also be the secondary main character.
@@thejinxedcat3616 First calling sanji a secondary main character isn't a stretch, I just think he is less so then zoro and least post wano. And you mention them being called the wings of the pirate king, but zoro is the right hand. It is like calling king and queen equal in rank and importance when king is clearly above queen and kaido treats them as such.
As for kobi I said maybe kobi because he haven't seen much for him at all, he has given us a handful of glimpses into the marines and so far has been pretty unimportant to the story. So as of right now he is not a secondary character but he could be later which is why I mentioned him.
The problem is that the length of one piece makes kobey seem unimportant but he is show every arc, either in cover stories or just in a chapter recap of the outside world.
The reason zoro can’t be a duodrogonist is that he is under the main character in both position and strength. At no point has it been in question if zoro was equal or keeping up with Luffy because zoro is under him. This means that zoro can’t push Luffy to be better. Or do anything (he has never lead the crew outside of fights and he is just a swordsman) people like to say that he’s vice captain but he isn’t he has no position over the crew.

Putting that aside, you are mistaken. Let us look back to water 7 when ussop turned against the crew and fought luffy. Zoro is the one who kept them together. That is his role as vice captain, when luffy falters zoro immediately steps on to keep it together. He keeps luffy on track.
Fast forward to the famous nothing happened incident, zoro could have continued fighting with the help of sanji but he didn't, luffy would have certainly but what zoro did was he put sanji down and took the sacrifical spot for the crew.
Why do I say this makes him the secondary man character? Because he did it for luffy, you said zoro can't push luffy to be stronger which i think is incorrect but that is a separate topic, what zoro does is he pushes luffy to his goal. More then any other character zoro keeps luffy moving forward and that is what a duodrogonist is supposed to do narratively. Yes sasuke made naruto want to get stronger but getting stronger wasnt the goal, it was the means to the end of getting sasuke back, there was a narrative goal, zoro keeps luffy on the narrative goal.
So...as a Deuterogonist, where would Bakugo land? #8? #9? Because, and I know this is my bias for MHA showing, I think he fits in that category of being a good foil for the main MC for the first half of the story then advances to be the the rival to beat, then finally becomes the one person, besides All Might, what kind of burden and mentality Deku has from start to the current time in the manga.
Potentially, he would be above Kawaki and maybe Genos if the Todorokis and OFA/AFO users weren't holding the narrative hostage. If his growth and improvement weren't mere footnotes in arcs that were about either Izuku's physical and technical improvement or Enji's emotional development and accepting responsibility for the consequences of his actions, then he would've been a great deuteragonist and rival for Izuku.

Excellent choice for #1 I couldn't agree more. I liked the zoro pick especially, since he's so often just grouped in as "part of the crew." Mikasa from Attack on Titan could be on this list. Migi from Parasyte could also potentially fit here, super underrated anime btw. Jet from Cowboy Bebop would also have been good.
He's not the second protagonist tho kobey is designed to be the secondary main character. It's kind of bad because kobey isn't there most of the time but he is the duodorogonist

You’re missing some key points in vegeta’s character development. He didn’t chose to stay on earth after he was defeated. He left. Went to namek, lost. Helped out the Z fighters for a bit. Still lost. Goku saves him. Goes to new namek, brags about killing a bunch of namekians. Makes a bigger connection with bulma, decides to go to earth under the guise to defeat kakarot. Ends up throwing dick to miss briefs, stays on earth

@@jonathanalexis6792 If memory serves, except for a stretch of S01 he wasn't often a conspicuous presence like the Zepellis! Now his foundation covering all the bills (especially in S03) was a HUGE thing, but not quite the same as being right there with the protagonist.

If it counts, Char Aznable from the original Mobile Suit Gundam is a very interesting deuteragonist because he starts an antagonist then becomes the main viewpoint character of the MC’s opposite faction. A more definitive example from Gundam is Athrun Zala from Gundam SEED who’s not as cool as Char is.

I think Illumi said it best Killua is the moon to Gon's blinding sun and when Gon became dark Killua had to be the one to provide light. You see both characters at both ends of the spectrum and their reactions to similar trauma based on upbringing. I agree with Killua as #1 but Zoro should at very least be #3
HxH is also my favorite anime of ALL TIME! But I didn't know that bit about the footsteps! It makes so much sense, though. Kilua is my favorite character of all time across any medium or genre. and that little snippit of info about his footsteps, just cemented how amazing HxH is! Thank you Nick!

Before I even finish the video I just wanna say Zoro is goated and Gon/Killua are friendship goals!
This may be a bit basic but I always liked Deku and Bakugou's rivalry because it feels the most genuine in that people you grew up with can abandon you for higher social standing because kids are inherently shallow and being praised and hailed for being popular or cool makes people addicted to that feeling of superiority while those without it can actually make more genuine friends.
And that when maturity happens through continuing life and its unexpected occurrences, you slowly get humbled by the simple act of being put in an environment where everyone's equally strangers to one another.
And then through further hardship Bakugou reconnects with and grows more open to people about his thoughts and feelings, and this bridges a gap between what inferiority complex he had towards Deku, now he sees that they can be friends again while Bakugou now has the final hurdle of holding himself responsible to his past abuse of Deku AS HE SHOULD even as Deku hasn't ever taken those words to heart even if they have effected his subconscious to be seeing himself as not worth noticing.
Like people make a big deal about him telling Deku to kill himself
but well kids of his age can be like that, they don't know the weight of their words or actions especially when its failed to be taught to them by society or their parents, so it usually takes a big bruise to the ego to make them more cautious and in that state they can eventually change themselves for the better.
Bakugou's character is like a perfect humanization of past rival archetypes like Sasuke or Vegeta, no fantasy backstory circumstance required, he's just a kid like deku who wants to be a superhero, but his reasons led him to be a bully because he prides himself with his skill and talents which are popular and attractive traits in their world.
I feel like Alibaba from magi is another great one because of how he fills in the gaps of the social aspect of the magi world
You are right, but I think Magi is pretty underrated anime, and thats why it hasn't ended up here. Even Morgiana and Sinbad can be honorable mentions from Magi universe. Or should I mention Hakaryuu as well, with his backstory. Or just because there are so many animes with great/strong side characters, like:
- Bakugo and Todoroki in My Hero Academia
- Satoru Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen
- Osamu Dazai in Bungou Stray Dogs
- Sagiri in Hell's Paradise
- Literally whole squad in Haikyuu
- Mio, Ushio and Hizuru in Summertime Render
- Death the Kid and Blackstar in Soul Eater
- Reigen and Hanazawa in Mob Psycho
I can go on and on...

Kawaki being essentially in-canon retconned to be Naruto's son almost feels like meta storytelling, as the fandom *wanted him* to be Naruto's son. At least, Kawaki acted and seemed like what Naruto's son should have been, and the fandom wouldnt let it go for the longest time. I firmly believe that as the time skip goes on, Kawaki will definitely become a fan favorite and one of the best things to come out of the sequel series.
Zoro is also a great pick, he is an all time GOATED character in anime. Is he too self-serious at times? Yes. Does he expect too much from his friends at times? Yes. But has Zoro stolen the hearts of One Piece and anime/manga fans throughout the decades? *Most definitely.*
And L! Oh god, it's been a LONG time since I've watched Death Note. I need to go back and watch it again. Light is one of the best MC's ever, but that is partly due because L was such a massive part in going wits to wits with Light. Had L known about the Death Note and the rules from the beginning, he almost definitely would have outplayed Light. As that was what made their beef so good to watch, it was a game of 3D chess to Light and L, only with their lives on the line.
Sasuke obviously deserves to be on the list, i can go on about how he deserves to be on here, but you put him on your list despite despising the guy. Respect.
Yuno and Asta almost feel like a carbon copy of Naruto and Sasuke, and that's mainly because... they are. They arent exactly the same, but the basic characteristics and outline of their dynamics are the same. Black Clover is technically the skeleton of Naruto, but made into it's own story and deserves to be recognized as an amazing story in it's own right. So damn good and im glad that Yuno is recognized as much as he is. Yuno isnt Sasuke, Yuno is what Sasuke *should have been* and that is what makes him amazing.

A couple of things about the Death Note part. 1st L is not the deuteragonist and definitely not the protagonist, he’s the antagonist with Light as the protagonist. L is opposing Light and is therefore the antagonist, Light being “Evil” and L being “good” doesn’t make them an antagonist or a protagonist . L doesn’t really belong on the list. Second, as mentioned by others, Light did not half his lifespan and did not directly kill L. That was done by Misa’s shinigami Rem.

another honorable mention should go to team rocket. maybe not as strong as Ash, but they love their pokemon just as much as him and they're just as dedicated to improving themselves. James loves his pokemon like they were his kids and Jessie's always trying to be top coordinator or performer or whatever, and Meowth is just like Pikachu except his version of Ash doesn't want him. plus they all willingly drop whatever they're doing to help Ash when stuff hits the fan

One of my favorite moments that showcase Killua and Gon's friendship, is the dodgeball game.
Gon being the only one that possesses the raw strength to hit and overpower Razor, NEEDS Killua to hold the ball while Gon focuses his power. Gon knows that the force of his hits are breaking Killua's hands, but he also *understands* that Killua will stop at nothing to help him. Gon knows that Killua isnt upset about his hands being damaged and Killua is the only person present with the toughness to handle the pain of his broken hands repeatedly being broken even further.
Killua understands that winning that dodgeball game is needed to beat Greed Island, but furthermore, Killua understands that Gon wouldn't be happy without beating Razor and *learning about his Father.* Killua wasn't only shouldering the pain of his broken hands, Killua was shouldering and supporting Gon's deepest desire and Killua wants his bestfriend to be happy.

If Killua was against this and got mad at Gon, then it would have changed their entire dynamic. But because Killua loves Gon, he was willing to go as far as shattering his hands for Gon. Because Gon already proved that he would face an entire family of world renowned assassins to free Killua. They would both put their lives on the line for each other, so when Gon is being selfish, you don't mind as much as you would otherwise.

Zoro is the right hand man BUT Nami is the Vice Captain though. She isn't the 3rd, 4th or 5th strongest but she is the one who takes all decisions unless Luffy over rides it! The rest just follow what Nami or Luffy say and I dont just mean Sanji.

A protagonist is essentially the perspective that we are experiencing the story from. So you would be correct that L and Light are both Protagonists.
I would say that L is the antagonist still he is acting to stop the plans of Kira light. But the dynamic is that light is the villain and L is the hero of the story and that’s what is compelling about them and their dynamic L is the antagonist acting to stop the protagonist while also being the hero, and light is his foil
Holy hell!! That's a good analysis of Boruto. I just thought Kawaki hated the Ototsuki, therefore, any Ototsuki he wanted to kill. Which gives potential to his line "end of shinobi" which model themselves after an Ototsuki.

This might be a hot take, but I think Yuno a little too high on this list.
Cause at least to me, he’s pretty boring, he doesn’t have much of a character to stand on his own, and is only really hype when hes with asta. He feels less like a character and more like a powerful plot device to balance out the playing field against the overpowered villains. Even when we get his backstory not much changes about him aside from a power up. Other deuteragonist on this list have a story of their own that plays off the protagonist but Yuno’s whole identity is Asta’s pretty boy rival.
If anything he seems like the op bland isekai protag you loathe😂

Light is the protagonist, L is the antagonist. Protagonist and antagonist are all about point of view from the story, not whether the main character is a good or bad guy. Doesn't change anything about this video, but it is a pretty important clarification for analyzing fictional texts.

I may be a JJBA stan, but having the Zeppeli family as an honorable mention is wild considering Speedwagon should be in the top 10. Through him, the other 5 parts get to happen as they do and he moves the plot along through the use of the Speedwagon foundation, his legacy after death.
I would argue that Luffy's Deuteragonist is Coby. Zoro is very much like Luffy, where Coby is his polar opposite but has similar aspirations, seeking to attain those goals in a different way. Buggy works too.

Its hard with one piece because the interplay of all of the characters specifically with luffy is so important to their evolution. But I think zoro has the most direct impact on luffy with his choices and is often shown as the only one strong enough to be his shield at crucial moments and he knows it. He is luffy's partner and sanji is his. Other characters are inspired by luffy and even he is saved in the beginning by him but I think he has the most realistic understanding of what they actually face in the world and his job as the person who stands behind him as his support. It feels more complex of a relationship than he has with most people
a Deuteragonist is the secondary character of the series not the rival or the opposite of the mc shows like naruto and dbz really made people change what a Deuteragonist means lmao coby is just someone whos influenced by luffy like konohamaru for example zoros goal is the second most important in the plot that alone is enough then u add him being the actual first mate which is the embodiment of what a Deuteragonist usually is and last thing coby shares more personality traits with luffy more than zoro who only acts in the goals that luffy wants and not that he necessarily share that mindset but luffys polar opposite is teach and his the antagonist
@@abdalrhman7998 which also to be fair an ensemble cast doesn't even need to HAVE a deuteragonist. Like it's not mandatory to a story, zoro fits the most often but everyone essentially gets several arcs where they're featured as the most important other crew member and have emotional or mental growth and changes.
They don't really have similar aspirations, at least in the case of reaching laughtale, becoming pirate king and overall desire for freedom and adventure. That would be Blackbeard and who is more a perfect foil in terms of all these aspects. Luffy goes for the straight path while BB will not think twice to use others and deception. Coby is more of the foil to the entirety of Marine/World Government. But really, Zoro is the perfect deuteragonist. The "foil" part is often seen when it comes to how Luffy views his crew/nakama and how zoro views them when it comes to their objectives. Luffy is often soft to his nakama but zoro is always strict. Zoro is never taking things lightly when it comes to responsibility. And Zoro keeps Luffy in line when it comes to their dreams.

Nah, man. Zoro is the 1st mate. He is the embodiment of LOYALTY. His determination and will power are 2nd to none. He wants to be the greatest swordsman but has been shown to be willing to tank that dream for Luffy's sake.
HxH literally has 3, perhaps 4 protagonists. Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Hisoka. Leorio was underutilized until the Chairman Election Arc. Hopefully he'll get some shine on the Dark Continent. Looks like Ging may be replacing Gon, as well

Gyro Zepelli and Johny depict the best ever written friendship in the history of Animanga. Gyro is the best deuteragonist in any animanga ever written.
Its a shame how little people know about jjba and how most of its beauty is lost through memes.
Especially in SBR, which has so much serious undertone than we are led to believe,
Under the mask of memes, lies the Gyro, a man who is impressed by Johny's determination, but also scared that Johny's Eyes show Death.
The time they spend together is genuinely the most chill JJBA has ever been.
It all comes circling back to us in final moments, just how much Gyro mean to Johny, when Gyro is killed by Valentine, but Johny instead of giving a Typical Shounen bitch-like Protagonist Scream(like Luffy), Johny just stands there, unable to believe what just happened, he huffs and puffs to the point of hyperventilating and softly says "Gyro..."
And cemented by the fact that moments prior to this, Gyro just laid down the foundation of using Perfect infinite rotation to overcome Love train, which Johny follows and beats Valentine cuz of that, this shows how incredibly important Gyro's role is in SBR.
As, unlike traditional Shounens, JJBA's characters actually give it their all (Life included) to necessitate their friend's victory.
I could put Bucciarati, Jotaro or even Koichi here, but if I had to choose one deuteragonist from jjba to put on no.1 spot, it would be Gyro.🗿🗿
