    Today was finally the day that I ventured out of the neighborhood and hit some main roads!! Jon was able to come with me and make an outing out of it! See how I did on my first ride to the store.

    My arch nemesis as a fresh rider was roundabouts, some of them real small so you got a tight left turn immediately followed by a tight right when leaving the roundabout. I went so slow, holding up traffic behind me, til I got the hang of it. All about confidence and practice. I just went out late at night with no traffic and drove around randomly in areas with various road obstacles, to learn how to do it with no pressure, and then gained the skill needed to do it when there's traffic.

    • @JackiesMotoGarage
      @JackiesMotoGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh man I can't even imagine having to do a roundabout! We don't have many of those here. Great idea going out late so you can practice without the pressure. I will have to do that! Ride safe!

    Good job, Jackie. A couple things I did with my son when we got his bike going was to use a light post in a parking lot to practice tight turns. It's controlled and you have a stationary object to reference. The other thing is to look ahead to the point where you want to be when you are riding. And if you try it out remember to do it in both directions at different rates of speed.
    As far as lane position, I avoid the right lane on long residential straights so I can be more visible to both sides of traffic coming off side streets. And when leading in a ride I try to stick to left side of the lane as much as possible.
    A lot of it is situational, just remember to think of being in the spot that you believe will keep you the most visible to other people on the road.
    Edit: another thing we worked on in a parking lot was going row to row without stopping while maintaining lane position. Ride to the end and make the turn to enter the next row without cutting too tight to too wide.

    You killed it, Jackie! Great job! I totally understand the turn problem. For me, turning at 10 mph is very different than turning at 50 mph. I use totally different techniques and body position. For a slow turn, I try to sit up taller because you have to turn the handle bars. That will force one of your hands to come a lot closer to your body than you're used to. When I do slow turns, it feels like the handlebars are locked beneath me (you don't have to fully lock the handle bars if you're not comfortable. I wasn't able to do that until I figured out how to control the bike at slow speeds with the clutch and rear brake). For fast turns, all you really need to do is manage your front brake (initial braking zone and trailbraking, if you're into that) and lean on the bike as much as you need. For slow turns, I use less body lean and also will counterbalance (if I'm turning left, I turn the handlebars to the left as I lean it and press hard with my right foot against the right foot peg and take all the pressure off my left leg). With all that being said, I think the most important thing is to trust the bike to stand up when you give it gas and know how to feather the clutch at slow speeds. And just for reference, I use slow turn techniques at intersections even if I'm headed into the intersection at a fast speed. I always make sure to slow down to slow turn speed.
    I hope these tips help! So cool to see you on the main roads. Ride safe!

    I'm sure others have said this already, but I always say the same advice for both people learning to wear bifocals (I'm in optical) and people learning to turn their motorcycles: point your nose where you wanna go for the best results. Your nose is your guide. That's part of it of course, you also gotta lean and do countersteering, but it helps a lot mentally when you use your nose as your guide :)

    Some struggle with turns because they're afraid to lean the bike. More practice leaning in the turns, look where you want to go - keep your chin up and pointed in that direction - don't look down. You'll get the hang of it soon. Keep practicing.

    Even when it's cool enough for me to wear a helmet, I must take it off when I get off the bike. I get his humor. I use the lane that puts me the closest to the intersection. If both would put me first to go, I use the right lane. Be careful in that heat.
