  • Back in 2009 just a few weeks after a AMA Supercross title fight for the ages between James Stewart and Chad Reed, neither of them headlined the opening round of AMA Pro Motocross. Instead, Ryan Villopoto in his debut on a 450 in motocross, outdueled his long-time rival Mike Alessi at Glen Helen to win on his debut and go right into the points lead as well. Less than a week later, he would tear his ACL. Despite trying to race the second round at Hangtown, his season would ultimately be over. But for a brief moment, Villopoto had his eyes on a huge upset title chase following this breakthrough win at Glen Helen.

    Love this era of racing. 2 big things I noticed: we are blessed with peacock and no commercials; rider technique has drastically changed SO much

    • @blicky35
      @blicky35 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I feel like the technique has changed because of how the bikes have changed. When this race occurred those bikes f’n barked… but were prone to bog, or blow up at any given moment.

    • @mattiazanetta335
      @mattiazanetta335 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      yes, but you can notice the change of rider technique also watching race of 2015/2017 and now... less of then years, but big differences. look at the foot position on the pegs now. new era riders as Prado, Lawrence and Sexton ride very different than Herlings, Febvre or Anderson, for example. watching a 2017 race, I noticed Tomac changed so much his riding style and his foot position.

      @zacharyradford5552 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Technique really hasn’t changed that much as people think. The hopping around the track David Bailey was doing that in the 80s. I remember last year during Jett undefeated season they made a big deal about how off the gate he would shift with his heel McGrath was doing that in the 90s. “The more things change, the more they stay the same”.

    God they need to bring back glen Helen. How could you not put this race on the circuit. It is by far the best track for the riders, the racing and the fans. I've raced there on amateur day (same exact track as pro day) and I've watched the pro race as a fan. Absolutely epic. Bring it back now. One thing I have noticed that has gone away over the years is the input of the fans, the audio inserted into the broadcast, it makes it so much more exciting to watch, brings the intensity to the viewers at home. Now it's all quiet and you can only hear the announcers/commentators in both supercross and outdoors. Please bring that back also. It is a huge difference. Who the heck made these decisions. Complete fail

    LOVE this version of Glen Helen. The first turn is incredible. RV is so awesome to watch, especially compared to modern styles like Sexton and Jett. A great Glen Helen was 2014. Moto 1 Josh Grant is good but Moto 2 Dungey getting Roczen on the last lap if I remember right is an incredible race. I remember being at A1 2014 when KRoc won his first 450SX and then 2014 being the first motocross season I watched every race. Great times to be a Roczen fan

    After Ryan went out, it was Mike's title to lose....He was so good that year on the Suzuki. I remember going to Freestone in Texas, he put about 40 seconds to almost a minute each moto on Chad....The speed difference was visual, normally you cant see just a second or two a lap spread out throughout the entire track, but you could see the difference...and Chad liked the Suzuki and rode great. Don't forget, next to Ricky and then James, he was always one of the best outdoors every year he raced the series, he was no slouch by any means...I don't think he ever put the effort into outdoors like he did supercross either... Atleast, not until he was on his own Honda Factory backed 'TwoTwo motorsports' team, it seemed like he had something to prove to himself and everyone else...He was faster, leaner, and had a drive i never saw from him prior during the outdoors. He was straight up beating Ryan Villopoto and Ryan Dungey straight up with a big points gap coming into Millville, won the first moto extending his lead, passing for the lead in what seemed like would be a repeat of prior races. Unfortunately, he hit some square edged bumps and pushed the front going up the face in what's now known at the 'Chad-a-pult'... He left Millville still with the points lead, but he had a bad concussion which was clear after that final moto in Millville, and was clearly not the same mentally afterwards...That fire was extinguished in a blink of an eye, afterwards he looked like everyone else in the top 10...Goes to show how close all those guys are in speed and talent, the biggest seperator of the elite outside of the bike, is their confidence, mindset, and belief...
    So the fact Mike did that to Reed who was still in his prime, loved the bike that year and had his eyes dead set on his first outdoor title after RV dropped out, that's impressive... Regardless of what people think of him or his dad as a person, that's gnarly. He tried coming back after breaking his knee cap to keep his title hopes alive, but Josh Grant intentionally took him out quickly off the start, targeted that leg, and Mike ended up re-breaking his knee cap...Would he of made it through to beat Chad with a messed up knee? Highly unlikely to be the case, but it's easier to live with losing while knowing you gave it everything you had, than to not even been able to try because you got taken out by a rival first couple corners after coming back...and I've always liked Josh Grant, but that's just what happened lol.
    Then Mike got landed on by the entire pack on a blind down hill, including by the dude in last all by himself who had the entire track width all to himself, landed back wheel first right on his pelvis/stomach/leg area..the dude was a tough bastard...He beat the best the sports has seen on certain days outdoors, one was a heated battle with Dungey who was on his way to the title...I hated his style, but he was real fast outdoors, just never figured it out in supercross. He got close to a 125/250F regional, title once...
    Not as close as Hansen did, he actually tied in points for a regional title and ended up losing because of total race wins...That would be a terrible way to lose. Then the guy came back on PC as an old vet, dominated, then got hurt losing another title. Dude was so good, still has the best style, but just wasted his potential during his younger years and when he got it together off the track, it was too late and put himself into a 'now or never' situation...I really feel like he should of won a title or two, especially in the 125/250F regional series. People forget how long he's been around it seems like, even when he was riding for Mitch that year...i mean, his first win was on a Yamaha Of Troy, YZ125...
