    There are so few houseplants that are non-toxic to pets. Was one of the first things I researched when starting my houseplant hobby

    • @M_SC
      @M_SC 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They’re almost all non toxic if they don’t eat them. only various lilies (both true lilies and non lilies whose common name has lily in it) have pollen that hurts them.

      I disagree... All ferns, hoyas, prayer plants, orchids, peperomias, palms, bromeliads (including air plants), cordylines, rhipsalis, pileas among others are non-toxic... You have a lot of options just there.

    Kellie is only interested in the catnip and the oregano. She likes to rub against my cacti and so far, we've only had minor scratches. I keep all plants away from my birds. I had one chew on a Selloum a few years back and he died. Nothing is within reach of any beaks.

    What a great video Patrick.. all of this is good to know as I am a crazy cat lady LOL! I have 6 cats and thankfully they never mess with my indoor plants. I keep 2 pretty good size Terra cotta pots full of wheat grass on my patio.. my kitties enjoy grazing on that.

    • @Unpotted
      @Unpotted 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is very important.
      Cats and dogs need to eat grass periodically in order to pass hairballs and generally clean their intestines.
      By providing them with their own source of digestive aid, you remove their need to nibble on other, less desirable and less effective plants.
      Wheat grass is considered the best for cats.
      I also keep the papyrus relative called Umbrella Grass available for my cats as it’s a fun toy for them to let iff steam. 😸✌️

    Thanks for this video. I ran into this issue when I took my sisters cat in. My cat is a plant destroyer but her cat eats them and she ate some zz raven, monstera deliciosa, and scindapsus exotica and her head swelled up. I had to get rid of a lot of the ones that are toxic to pets which are the easier ones to care for and majority low light plants. I researched plant friendly plants and a lot of the them are “traps” or require bright light. So my struggle is real lol. Thanks again for the video

    opuntias are so scary. my mother and i actually found one planted in the ground at this big public park called high park in the city, which was a surprise to us because we didnt expect any cactus in our snowy climate, but there it was and she said that was the one that her father would cut up and dispose of by scattering it on the ground in the Philippines and they would just come back even more from the chunks. Theyre like warrior plants.

    Plants that I am seeing a lot of are philodendrons (Monstera) and sansevierias (Snake). From what I understand, those are toxic-to-pets plants, correct?

    • @Patadendron
      @Patadendron  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Correct. Philodendrons have crystal oxalates and sansevieria is a gastrointestinal irritant! Their toxicity isn’t as bad as the others mentioned in this video as toxicity is a grey scale, but would still definitely keep away from pets that like to chew plants! 💚

    • @Unpotted
      @Unpotted 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Patadendron You were definitely remiss not to mention the gray scale in the video.
      You also failed to mention the entire Euphorbia family, although an animal would have to eat much more than was palatable to suffer much harm from most of them.
      Still the sap is highly alkaline and will irritate eyes and mucus membranes.
      Many viewers watch TH-cam videos as though everything is absolute fact.
      As a content creator, it is incumbent upon you to ensure that you are not misleading them with incomplete information.
      Also, enough of the claptrap about plant “traps.”
      You live in a very small, arid part of the world.
      Maidenhair ferns (and the long list of other plants you’re warning people to avoid) did not spend millions of years evolving to survive in that climate.
      They grow perfectly well in many other parts of the country where the rest of us live.
      But you know this or you wouldn’t be holding so many of your plants captive in a grow tent.
      Have you not heard of self-watering pots???
      As water shortages continue to threaten the Southwest, it would be much more environmentally responsible to stick with cactus and succulent plants, and leave the rainforest plants in the tropics where they belong.
      Surely they would prefer that to a closet, and you would have water for bathing and drinking.
      😸✌️

      @@Unpotted Patrick didn't go over the Euphorbia species because this isn't an extensive list for toxic plants. There are many more plants that are toxic, but this list is for the more popular houseplants.
      Also maidenhair ferns, since you brought them up, are actually from all over the world. There's over 200 species and some of the have evolved to live in more cooler, less humid places. Plus, plants aren't kept hostage if they're living in a grow tent. If they're growing wonderfully, then they obviously like being where they are.

    • @Patadendron
      @Patadendron  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      String of pearls is best away from cats reach and they make for lovely hanging plants. Persian shield is not entirely safe, it is not seriously poisonous either, same with lavender - it isn’t deadly but it isn’t cat safe either. However, they do tend to stay away from lavender because they may dislike its smell. My cats tend to know which plants they can play with and they aren’t interested at all in eating the foliage anyway anymore. The only time my cats were wanting to chew on leaves was when they were curious kittens and even then they just loved the maidenhair fern 😂 (completely non toxic)
      Hope this helps! Congratulations on deciding to get a cat ❤️

      Ahem. Sorry bout that. But yeah, have anywhere from 1 to 6 dogs at my house depending on the day. Since I'm the only family member that works from home. People often drop their pets off with me 🤣 But none of them ever have interest in the plants thankfully..!
