- Welcome back to another episode from the series, A Beginner’s Guide to Houseplant Shopping! Already have all the pothos, zz plants and snake plants that you want? Then this is the list for you! This is a list of 10 great houseplants to add to your home, or plant collection. If I didn’t mention the specifics on care, the most important and basic part of the care is to water the plant when you’re sure that the soil is dry. Play around with the light as long as it doesn’t get direct rays from the sun, and you’ll be able to find out what makes that plant happy. Thanks for watching, and happy growing!

Yes to exactly what you said about the Pilea Peperomides. Let it DRY OUT BONE DRY. Otherwise the leaves will snap off so easy because they still have moisture. Let it DRY DRY DRY, then bottom water. Thanks for mentioning it's a good beginner plant and to let it dry out. I killed my first one when I was getting into houseplants years ago from watering it way too often without letting it get DRY.

I'll have to say as a beginner, the Chinese Money plant and the Pilea Aluminum plant are the two I struggle with the most. The easiest I've found are Golden Pothos, Algonema, and Philo Minima (which I think is also called the rhapidophora tetrasperma). They are all showing new growth and signs of thriving in their new home here. I just got a Monstera Adansonaii, but it's a bit finicky in comparison, and I discovered last night that it does something called guttation that no one ever discusses, but it's alarming when you don't know what is happening. It is not adapting as well as the other plants did but I've had them already month now and the Monstera Adansonaii is only 10 days settling in here, so I am still learning about it.
I'm a newbie myself, and the first indoor plant I got a few months ago was philodendron Birkin, and as of so far it's doin really well..... Keeps putting out new leaves and it's so exciting.so I feel like they are really easy care for begginers.Now, because if that i got my hubby to build me a plant shelf in frnt of my window and I'm up to 16 plants now. Since I did well with the philodendron, I went and bought 2 small 4 inch philo heartleafs which I'm already inlove with, a dragon scale which I was terrified I'd kill being so new but so far so good. I haven't dropped any leaves in the almost month iv had it so I'm hoping that's a good sign. It did have some yellow spots when I bought it, so my guess was over watered so I repotted in more airy soil with perlite and seems to be doin well. 🤞 Wish me luck ! Really enjoy these videos about plants that are good for begginers , find it very helpful
@@erinjoy5625 Best wishes on big beautiful plants! It's addicting, right? When I see new growth, I feel pride that I am doing something right, and then I want ALL the plants. I told myself that if I kept these alive until next spring, I could have more. I already have my wishlist made for spring 2023, lol.
@PinkT33 I’m not surprised the Pilea Aluminum was difficult, I’ve heard that a few times about it. I’m also not shocked to hear of your encounter with Pilea Peperomioides (Chinese money plantsseee. I still consider myself a beginner and my first - but definitely won’t be my last - attempt with it was a disastrous fail 😩
Omg I thought I was losing it when I kept seeing drops on the ends of the leaves after watering my multiple pothos! Thanks to this comment I know what it is! I have been so confused for months 😂 I was like “I swear the leaves should be dry by now?!?!”
Ive killed a few, but becuase I was watering WAY WAY WAY too much. You honestly have to let it dry out or the leaves will fall off 1 by 1 real easy just by poking it. Let it dry out and it will grow tall with pups! I believe most rubbery-feel leaves are holding a LOT of moisture and they want to dry out before getting wet again. Also prefer bottom watering (not wet leaves). Again, just my experiences!

Truthfully you can not have enough monstera adonsonii 🥰 I just chopped & propped mine plus added a trellis and made a new plant in the process
My daughter picks out plants & she chose the exotica (wasn’t my choice) it has really been an easy plant & has impressed me!

Thats a nice place to shop, so many plants🤗🤗🤗. Most of the plants you mention I already have and its true that they are joyful to grow and propagate👍. Pothos "Yuck" 🤣🤣🤣. I love💚 my golden pothos🤗. Grew it from a 4" starter plant and now I have big leaves🥰

Just one note on the Monstera Adansonii, do check when you buy the plant for splotchy curly leaves. I bought mine randomly, but it turns out it has a virus. They won't necessarily die to the virus, but they won't grow very happily either.

The Scindapsus in my collection is the 'Platinum' and I adore her. Over the decades of collecting plands, I have learned that the String of...are not for me.I am a huge fan of hoyas! I have nine varieties and want more. I have a huge Peace Lily 'Domino" and she is in my top ten list of favorite plants (I would cry if I lost her). I bought her four years ago in a four inch pot for $14.99. The only Syngonium in my collection is my favorite one the 'Milk Confetti'. The only reason that I don't have more is my space constraints, sigh. I have 120 plants in my apartment right now. Staghorn ferns rock! I am not a fan of Monstera anything, but that's just me. If you have the space for it, definitely go for a Monstera deliciosa.

I just purchased a cheese plant! They’re so pretty. A friend of mine had one and I was so jealous, I couldn’t stop thinking of it. Then the other day I was on lowers and there was a lonely cheese plant just sitting there waiting for me to purchase it! Can’t wait to see what it does!

Love my Scindapsus Exotica🌱😍and my Hoyas, so easy💚🌱I'm really getting into carnivorous plants lately, have 4 now,Drosera /Sundew, Nepenthes /monkey cup,Sarracenia/ pitcher, and of course a Dionaea muscipula/Venus flytrap. I agree with you on Syngoniums, beautiful, easy, grow fast!!! Love my Staghorn, and Rabbits foot ferns, so easy🤗💚🌱I planted my Staghorn in a Vanda basket, so far it's diggin it🤞💚🤗 Thanks for the great planty adventure!!! Beautiful plants 💚🌱💚🌱😍

@@Patadendron Yeah, they're on my patio, so they get plenty of insects, I also give them hydrated bloodworms from Pet shop. The Venus flytrap can have a meal worm once in awhile, smaller ones.

SoH and Pilea Peps were finicky for me...but 110% agree on the Syngoniums: waaay underrated superstar and is now a fave mine. I'm not a fan of recommending snake plants as a first plant either. It was boring and didn't offer enough of the fun parts of this hobby as a beginner. I quickly moved on to faster growers, viners and beautiful flower-ers 😍

My mum loved staghorns but could never get them from local nurseries, they were mounted only for decoration. She got a few pieces from a friend and tied them to trees with stocking.
The shaded ones didn't survive but somehow the one tied to our palm in full sunlight survived and flourished. She's so proud 💖

It's so helpful that the greenhouse there actually gives a little care paper on display near them! My closest greenhouse does not have those and some plants don't come with care cards 😕

I bought a monstera deliciosa when I first moved into my apartment and I’ve lived there for a little over a year. She has grown very slow and only have 3 leaves now he have 5 and is growing a new one this spring. Never have an issue with here I love her and talk to her especially when she’s growing a new leaf. I finally changed the soil and added some worm casting to the new soil and hopefully she thrives this year! I need to invest in a journal just to have info needed on hand and don’t have to stress out keeping it all in my adhd brain. Lol
The greatest thing about monsteras is how beautiful the leafs grow out curled and than expand in a bright green and then turn dark and huge. Mine tries to escape by growing outwards, i had to build a bridge between pots because the pot kept falling over. A nice problem to have. Good look with yours!
I adore my Pachira Aquatica. I bought a bigger plant about 5 months ago and it's like the only plant I didn't manage to kill (aside from my pothos plants). As long as I regularly water it, it just grows like crazy. I actually managed to kill my string of hearts baby plants but I'll try again because they were so lovely. I also plan to try Pilea Peperomioides, heard some great things about this plant. 😍

Please do a video on the peace lily domino care. Mine was struggling to the point of almost throwing it out. But it continued putting out new leaves for me....I couldn't go through with it! It's definitely a shell of itself. The edges keep browning

I'm really nervous about starting my plant journey. I'm gonna start with my room, there's not much direct sunlight but the place I live at is really hot and humid and it's always summer except for a couple rainy seasons. I'm gonna try asking advice from the people selling these plants too.

Sometimes it's the only option when you want a specific plant, other than to hold out. I'm not 100% against it but I do try to purchase plants in person as much as possible vs. ordering online! You have a magical day too Donna! ✨️ 💚

I've had a ton of plants since I was introduced to a spider plant during a school project where we got to grow our own plants. That was like 20 years ago but I always just bought plants because I like it green. it's cool to watch someone who knows things about the plants (such as their names, I know only what like 20% of my plants even are) I do still have a bit of that first spider plant btw, it's like the fourth generation but still :D
I usually buy plants because they are ...
- tall and cheap (dracaenas are a very common entry in this category, you can get like 1.20m tall ones for 10€ here)
- saintpaulias
- mini saintpaulias
- safe for cats
at this point I know what I definitely can't keep alive so I don't buy those anymore though. no point getting maidenhair ferns if they'll just dye in a couple of months, that's not fair to anyone.
generally, if it has flowers it will die fast I feel. all those pure green ones are so much easier to keep alive, except ferns but those aren't safe for cats anyway.

Actually, snakeplants turned out great to me as a complete beginner! Since they have the reputation of something that is easy to mantain and very forgiving if you forgot to water it, aaand since my windowsill is on the south side (once I managed to literally burn a plant on it), I started with a couple of hahniis and later added a moonshine type to the collection. All of them are growing extremely fast and looking very healthy and happy, one of the hahniis even grew a pair of children in the pot! I guess it is a nice plant to begin with, if you are a beginner with a south window 😄

Im new to houseplants and it started with a coworker giving me a pup/node(?dont know if either are correct terms?) of a snake plant ant I have been surprised by the growth in 6 months. I then picked up an easter lily that I repotted, which I believe was a mistake as it was root bound and after repotting, the buds that were set to bloom in a week or so shriveled and fell off. Anyways, I am ready for another plant to add to a very small but growing collection, and your videos have been helpful
My pilea peperomoides (Chinese money plant, UFO plant, Pancake plant) 🤣 nearly died. I bought at Lowe’s and it looked healthy. I brought it home and didn’t water it as I discovered, Lowes prob just watered it. So I waited for so long for the soil to dry but it never did and I noticed the plant was declining in health. So I decided to check the roots, and it had root rot! So I cut the heads off of my pelia plant. Poor plant has been over watered from care at Lowes. Currently propagating the plant and only one head is rooting but the other two aren’t. I am confident I can get one to survive. I salvaged 17$ lol. So pelia peperomoides are very tough plants and you can save them from death. lol
i lost the lowes receipt so I couldn’t exchange or return. 🙃

I have a monstera adansonii, I'm not sure how I feel about it tbh. It yellowed so much when I first got it, then my dog landed on it and I had to cut all of the broken stems. 😭😭 It seems to be doing better now, it's just a little bald.

Ouch. I paid 20$ for a 8 inch adansonii. Sure odd how some areas have the same plants be so expensive for such a tiny plant, and you go a state over, and that same species you paid 50$ for a tiny, not great specimen is a whole 5-10$.

Aglaonemas come in many beautiful versions and yes they are easy. I have several: red emerald, Wishes, red siam. Also called Chinese Evergreen

Tell me WHY I always kill my adonsonii 😭 I’ve had so many and Everytime, they die on me. They are so incredibly gorgeous that I will never give up on growing them but they always break my heart lol 🤪 I have one that’s doing well this far so let’s hope I can keep her happy 🤞🏼🤞🏼

Why do the monstera have holes?
I'm guessing it's evolutionary, to protect itself from certain leaf eating insects to make it look like its already eaten? Just my hypothesis!
