Cyborg and Katana are cheap this year but they really put the weakest displays they could find there. RTXes below 4080 disappoint too. Part of the Titan`s price is the MiniLed panel and mechanical keyboard. I decided to focus on performance and spare myself bells and whistles for now so I ordered a 4090 TongFang. Was really happy with GizmoSlipTech tests and comparisons recently.
Well I think I have found the solution and apparently it is an error in the MSI BIOS, for some reason in the advanced options the memory speed is set to 2000 by default which is equivalent to 2000mhz or 4000mhz in dual channel, many people claimed that the required speed should be set manually... In the tutorials that I found on youtube and forums it said to set 2400 to obtain a speed of 4800mhz or 2800 for the speed of 5600mhz but you must do the complete opposite, you must go step by step (not all at the same time since there come the delays and long waits and problems)... Restart with each activation. We start: You enter the BIOS then press the keys (R-CTRL+R-SHIFT+L-ALT+F2) to activate the advanced bios (you must do this every time you enter the BIOS) (each reboot takes a while and you only have to have patience), go to the path advanced>system agent (sa) configuration>memory configuration>memory. There you will find the memory profile, then change from (default SPD profile to custom profile) below find OCsafemode and deactivate it, reboot and enter the BIOS again to go to advanced and look for "overclocking performance menu" put the overclocking feature enabled, reboot again and at this point you will see that the reboot takes a little longer than usual but you must be patient and not panic as it takes a few minutes... Once it starts, enter the BIOS again and go to the advanced path> system agent (sa) configuration>memory configuration. You look for "frequency limit for mixed 2DPC DDR5" and the FOUR values that are in 2000 change them to number 0 since this value applies automatic speeds together with the latencies that your memory has. and this would be all... you restart again and it will take time but in the end you will get the maximum memory speeds offered by the manufacturer and you will not have problems. I think that the value of 2000 that comes by default is the real problem because it forces you to have that base speed, on the other hand the fact that the "Dynamic Memory Boost" cannot be activated at the moment also generates these inconveniences. I did it with a kingston DDR5 64gb (2x32) 5600mhz cl40 memory kit (I think they are the best on the market at the moment and even more with that latency) the change was considerable since the 3dmark time spy increased about 960 points without modifying values in the graphics card to get a score of 22430 points. If you're in the same boat changing these memories on this laptop and require additional help or have any questions, I'd be happy to help you resolve them. greetings !!
@@krystiandomagala4929 maybe the maximum you get, touching various things in the bios will be 4000 in the best of cases, I have had quite a few discussions in the MSI forums, and I tell you that they themselves say that this laptop has a penalty just for having 4 slots of memory, this laptop doesn't even do well with 96gb modules, it's quite a long story but the conclusion was that it's better to buy a laptop with only 2 memory modules.
If you truly don't need the portability of a laptop then build a desktop. For a third of the price you can build one that will kick the shit out of every gaming laptop in every metric and every individual component. And will last a lot longer as well.
Looking to my 10 years old msi GT 60. Back in the day the most powerful single gpu, the gtx 780m . Although i loved this computer, the initial gpu burned and nvidia gpu drivers stopped to be released in 2019. Witch is suspicious to me. Only 6 years of drivers update. This is a shame to me. Of course back in 2013 it "only" cost 1500€ but putted two ssds and rams to have a total of 3 ssds and 1 hdd. For a total of 1640go of space and 28 ddr3 ram. All that in a 15" form factor ! It was nuts and the price was about 2200€ in total. I replaced the gpu in 2020 for a new oem one and a new compatibility battery in 2021 for 150€ and it gives a second life to my laptopt. build quality is perfect, keyboard, screen lids, fan... , everything runs. The only and biggest drawback is the Nvidia drivers stopped in 2019. Witch start to cause me trouble in simple streaming official tv website and games who can't run. So here is your "futur proof" timeline story of 10 year of the top of line 2013 Msi GT laptop. Hope this GT titan gonna last at least 10 years with gpu drivers included regarding the price !
Appreciate the shout/link re the XMP guide, cheers. Not sure how different/better the 13th gen cooling layout will be as suitability for a desktop replacement, I used the 12900HX & 12700HX GT77's as desktop replacements for several months and for the most part they were phenomenal, but I've had to go back to a desktop due to the units shutting down under moderate to heavy load. I was getting 62C surface temps at shutdown working in UE5 with some video encoding going on at the same time, not an unreasonable workload for a desktop replacement but they packed in and shut down.
wow that is a spectacular level of fail, thermal shutdown. Even if theyre sitting on a bedspread they should downclock before that becomes necessary. 62C case temp is burning hot. Literally burning. $8k, $9k pricetag, not really reflective of the quality of the unit. And if that heat ends up causing a failure on the motherboard i wonder how many thousands it'd cost out of warranty, considering the HX and 4090 GPU are all soldered ......
@@greebj I can 100% vouch for the burning hot summary. As it was being used as a desktop replacement, it was used perpetually with the lid closed and an external monitor so that likely contributes to the heat build up around the keyboard above where the GPU is, the natural ventilation of air up and out the keyboard was sealed off but still it shouldn't shut down like that.
@@vmafarah9473 Negative, tbh the ship has sailed on the 12th gen units as they're last gen now, and this only happened earlier this week. I've been using the GT77 since April last year before they were even seeded as I did the HX launch at Intel Vision in Texas, been using a Titan since then and it's been supreme for the majority of the time. Given this only happened earlier in the week, I'm still trying to internally process whether or not what I do is beyond the scope of what any laptop should be asked to do. Yes there's desktop replacements but is that actually an accurate definition. I'm still working on my thoughts/opinions on that before responding. I might see if I can reproduce what happened for a content piece though.
@@Neil3D Oh that sound very bad. I was just about to order last year msi titan gt77 12UGS-009, but now have doubts. Two units failed? Which models exactly ?
Now this is the review I've been waiting for, thank you Jarrod. Honestly I don't want to shell out the cash but with so few having the m.2 slots I need I don't have much choice.
As much as people complain about no numpad on the blade (as if that’s keeping them from buying them lol), this guy should have record breaking sales this year
I was looking for a MSI motherboard and out of curiosity I looked at the laptops they got and holy this laptop is a beast. Very nice review and presentation Mr. Jarrods. Thank you very much
If i bought a powerful bulky laptop Then i would rather go for strix, legion, blade or even the tuf series Cuz they look clean Msi laptop dimensions remind me of 15 year old gaming laptops
Basically this is the most desktop replacement like laptop. It's thicker for better cooling and is easily the most upgradeable laptop. In that regard, it bring thicker is not a drawback - it was never intended to be thin. It trades thinness for cooling performance. Msi has other laptops for that. A bigger drawback, IMO is cost. The other is that the tuning should have been better. Build quality is another aspect MSI needs to work on
Hi Jarrod! Could you please feature a laptop in a $1500-2000 price range which is best for the price? (for example last year it was strix g15 and advantage edition, what about now?)
I assume that such a low color gamut is due to HDR being turned on on the laptop. Without HDR, the color gamut at all levels is almost 100% according to Brandon's test at GizmoSlipTech. Jarrod can you please confirm if the test was done with HDR on?
All testing in the video was done with HDR off unless specified (eg screen brightness). The color gamut is hardly any different with it on. I didn't bother including the results with it on due to limited screen space and because it's not really that much different and not even always better: HDR off (as reported in video): 95.1% sRGB 75.2% AdobeRGB 87.1% DCI-P3 HDR on: 97.5% sRGB 79.7% AdobeRGB 81.9% DCI-P3
No AO/G-sync = no sale. Period. Edit, terrible screen response time for gaming is the final nail in coffin. Fix these two things MSI, and I WILL buy this, fully kitted out.
Was honestly planning to buy a gaming pc but I only see benefits in a gaming laptop especially if I’m in a discord or league in a game I won’t be bound to having to stay near my pc all the time
I believe there is (or going to be) a MINI-LED version for the 18 inches Scar. That's the only laptop that will have that panel at that size. That's on my wish list for this Christmas. Until than I will try to survive with a RTX 3070 ...
These laptops that the youtubers test are a little bit better than the ones in the market,it could be a better cooling systems, you can see the user benchmarks are lower than these rates
What a machine. I have last years GT67 and its similar: MSI, not the best build quality in ugly black but the performance is there. The SCAR 18 has impressive performance but doesnt have this beefy of a cooling solution. Whats 10 FPS more if the thing sound slike a jet engine all the time?
I think it would be interesting to see how efficient these power bricks are. I recently discovered that my Lenovo charger (65W, USB-C) draws 7W even when the computer isn't plugged into it. That adds up if constantly plugged into the wall.
@@perekman3570 you are definitely not going to leave the charger plugged into the wall at all times tbh. especially with the 65w charger, it's probably going to be carried around
Thanks. We are waiting for your rtx 4060 laptop review. These new rtx 4000 laptops are confusing. I think Nvidia messed up the naming and confused us. Nvidia wanted to charge more for all of them that why they invented the xx90 and shifted everything up a name tier Your list also needs an M on the end of every one of them
Question, where did you get the cooling pad from? Struggling to find one to serve the size of this laptop. Great review. I've got the 4080 version and looking forward to your comparison!
1:05 and this is an aspect that needs to be expanded upon. People don't know (like i was 1 year ago) about alternatives. A normal person thinks of a desktop systems, either imagines those ATX towers or the compact PCs without a GPU But there's the mITX performance builds. And cases of 10l or similar have the footprint of a 15inch laptop with a 15-20cm height. And under 10kg of weight. (compared to 4kg of the much larger footprint 17-18" gaming laptops) They can be easily taken into a backpack if you want gaming somewhere else. The large screen gaming laptops aren't laptops anymore. They are clunky, heavy and most importantly don't game very well when unplugged. There's no merit for a dedicated GPU laptop or a 17" screen if you need it on the move (like on a train, or plane). And this would lead to a great new series of videos. Comparing those portable 14"-15" laptops vs gaming laptops while unplugged. Simulating a vlogger/content creator/whatever that is on the move and might want to play some games. I'd love to see playing fps on a laptop that you hold on your lap as you lay comfortable on the beach seat, or on car rear seat. And the actual capabilities of the 17-18" gaming laptop unplugged.
no laptop will give u that. Ur best option is 13.6inch asus laptop with 6900hx. It has an integrated gpu of 680m. If you limit cpu power consumption to 15W, you might be able to game on it for 3 hours but on low settings and resolution.
I ran the PugetBench Photoshop Benchmarks against the Intel i9v13 64GB RAM against an i9v11 16GB and 40GB RAM. Nice very detailed review... I was many here for the review on this laptop because of the panel... and I noticed you made 1 distinction many other reviewers failed to do... In that.. enabling HDR in windows lets you get much brighter screen than just running it stock in SDR.. This explains why I've seen some review websites out there say this screen can only do about 550-630 nits while others say it can do the full 1000 nits... Since there weren't any HDR laptops before it was a non issue in the past but making the distinction between HDR vs SDR peak brightness will only become more and more important going forward.... Flipping between SDR and HDR on my laptop I can see a higher brightness than in SDR mode.. though not sure exactly how much... Windows really needs to step up their HDR game...
Hello, are you going to do the MSI GE78HX? seems rather interesting based on what other people are saying, but i think the way you do your review would provide the most information!!!
Hello Jarrod! How are you doing? I appreciate your honesty very much. Of course, you're right about bigger isn't always better, and this laptop is too heavy for my taste. Then, would you be kind to suggest us a multipurpose laptop that includes design, quality, lightness, and above all, power, please? Thanks a lot!!!
14:05 I get what you're going for here, but I'm pretty sure 1:1 contrast ratio is literally the worst possible result, because it'd mean that the darkest possible light is the same as the brightest possible.
I think because of those "fans" like you, MSI has fallen behind this time. You should look straight to the fact that it's not good enough comparing to other top tier laptop and comparing to it own price. This time gt77 is not worth buying. But because there are "fans" like you always keep saying good for MSI, they become subjective and thought that they have already done a good job => it makes them fall behind. Just frankly criticize them with bad reviews, to make them truly improve. That's what "real fans" do
🤣🤣 why you all attacking me. Competitors are doing well with lower prices doesn't mean MSI isn't doing their job. And I'm not okay with this price tag. But the performance is still out of lines. That's what I am saying
@@hazaelelysion I'm not attacking U, I give U advice. If U want your brand to be the best, always give the criticize and bad review if there's something they are not good. @@vmafarah9473 Don't let it discharge completely nor go to 100% for that matter, if you're on AC regularly don't use it, put it in storage at 85%-90% charge. Even my Scar 16 has better performance values, it's amazing how this "Small" ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR 16 laptop can beat a monster like MSI GT77 Titan!! I thin'k maybe the performance gap is due to CPU metal liquid that Scar 16 (and 18) have and makes the power limit much better in terms of thermals
Why do laptop nerds care about how thin it is? Idgaf. I care about performance. The laptop isn't heavy. Have you forgotten when you were in school and had a backpack full of books? Also, who cares about laptop speakers? Damn near everyone uses a headset with a laptop.
Yeah, it felt great lugging books around all day. Just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should have to. Also, you would be surprised how many people use laptop speakers (I was). Not everyone is interested in a bigger laptop. There are also smaller laptops that perform the same or better than the Titan, look nicer, have better screens and have Advanced Optimus. Just to name a few reasons someone might not want the Titan. People buy different laptops for different reasons and they may not be the same as yours.
You have already done reviewing so many higher end 4000 series laptop and most people wants to see how 4060 and 4070 perform so you should bring that first
I do think about my subscribers which is why I bought a 4050 GF63 recently. High end laptops came out first, there will be lower options coming though. I am also doing a 3060 v 4060 comparison this week.
4-5000$??? Did I hear that correct? Here in Scandinavia, it is 7000$! Definitely not worth it. For that price, I would want it delivered to my doorstep by a gorgeous woman with a bottle of champagne.
The reason for weaker benchmarks at 1080p may be a strange gt77 13v problem, maybe bug: when hdr is turned on, system starts to lag a lot; processor and memory slow down by 1-7%. Jarrod (or anyone), did you notice the same thing? PS. it is possible to set DDR5 as 4800 without a slow boot (i did it).
No laptop is perfect. It's either brightness, battery or something else. You'll find a good screen on this but no good performance, you'll find a good performance but no good screen. Nothing is perfect

I also bought exact same specs as you wrote in last year’s December. It’s so so great and I like the lighted logo on the back. If you find a good deal go for it.
Within first week rgb white lights turned to purple and on lowest setting they turn to colored and some buttons don’t light up. On rtx 4090 mode doom eternal with 4k max settings rtx on only gives 30 fps and all games have performance issues. I couldn’t regret more about a purchase. Total waste of money people. Hi Jarrod! I have a question; out of all 16 inch laptops, if price didn't matter, which one do you think is best overall? So performance on games, portabilty, noise, battery...
It seems to me they're all rather similar with minor gains/losses on various points. But for performance, noise, games... the LPP water cooler on the XMG Neo / Mech16 really does set it apart from the rest.
@@vmafarah9473 7945HX is only up to 20% better in a small number of productivity workloads, for the most part it's roughly similar. In gaming it is either equal or slightly behind. See GizmoSlipTech's recent video. The larger cache on the 16- and 12-core AMD chips is spread across 2 CCD's which negates the number advantage. Just look at how the 7900X/7950X are equal to the 7700X in gaming despite double the cache. AMD HX battery life is also quite bad, maybe even worse than Intel. AMD H/HS will probably have much better battery, but their performance will be lower. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

Finally the laptop review I been waiting for I watch other reviews but love your reviews the most when buying new hardware
Did you informed MSI?

Appreciate the reviews jarrod
As much as people complain about no numpad on the blade (as if that’s keeping them from buying them lol), this guy should have record breaking sales this year
I was looking for a MSI motherboard and out of curiosity I looked at the laptops they got and holy this laptop is a beast. Very nice review and presentation Mr. Jarrods. Thank you very much
That Laptop, if you wonder, costs more than a new Yamaha Ninja 400 Motorcycle.
If i bought a powerful bulky laptop
Then i would rather go for strix, legion, blade or even the tuf series
Cuz they look clean
Msi laptop dimensions remind me of 15 year old gaming laptops
4ssd,4ram,4fan.
Build quality is another aspect MSI needs to work on
I was peacefully studying statistics. I got your notification and now i am visualising the games statistics
Hi Jarrod! Could you please feature a laptop in a $1500-2000 price range which is best for the price? (for example last year it was strix g15 and advantage edition, what about now?)
Amazing video as usual.
Maaan, this is a beast and no one is doing this except MSI. So, of course, they can bump up the price
I assume that such a low color gamut is due to HDR being turned on on the laptop. Without HDR, the color gamut at all levels is almost 100% according to Brandon's test at GizmoSlipTech. Jarrod can you please confirm if the test was done with HDR on?
Jarrod has to learn a lot.
yep, one of the reasons why content creators should turn off HDR while working with color-sensitive tasks
All testing in the video was done with HDR off unless specified (eg screen brightness).
The color gamut is hardly any different with it on. I didn't bother including the results with it on due to limited screen space and because it's not really that much different and not even always better:
HDR off (as reported in video):
95.1% sRGB
75.2% AdobeRGB
87.1% DCI-P3
HDR on:
97.5% sRGB
79.7% AdobeRGB
81.9% DCI-P3

SCAR 16 seems to be the way to go. My unit has almost identical test numbers to Jarrods SCAR 18. But the SCAR 16 has a much better display.
I believe there is (or going to be) a MINI-LED version for the 18 inches Scar. That's the only laptop that will have that panel at that size.

As in you’re using that on the cpu and gpu? Or just to replace the thermal pads?
What a machine. I have last years GT67 and its similar: MSI, not the best build quality in ugly black but the performance is there. The SCAR 18 has impressive performance but doesnt have this beefy of a cooling solution. Whats 10 FPS more if the thing sound slike a jet engine all the time?
I think it would be interesting to see how efficient these power bricks are. I recently discovered that my Lenovo charger (65W, USB-C) draws 7W even when the computer isn't plugged into it. That adds up if constantly plugged into the wall.
Muiltiplying is faster than adding. Less than 30c for an entire week

Thanks. We are waiting for your rtx 4060 laptop review. These new rtx 4000 laptops are confusing. I think Nvidia messed up the naming and confused us. It should have been:

Is this true? Silent mode basically same perf in games as balanced?! Such low fan noise wtf
1:05 and this is an aspect that needs to be expanded upon.
People don't know (like i was 1 year ago) about alternatives.
A normal person thinks of a desktop systems, either imagines those ATX towers or the compact PCs without a GPU
But there's the mITX performance builds. And cases of 10l or similar have the footprint of a 15inch laptop with a 15-20cm height. And under 10kg of weight. (compared to 4kg of the much larger footprint 17-18" gaming laptops)
They can be easily taken into a backpack if you want gaming somewhere else.
The MSI doubled the score of my 2 yr old 16GB RAM laptop, but once I upgraded my RAM to 40GB it was about 1.5x faster.

Thanks a lot!!!
imho, the one of the disadvantages on today is the 17' display, but not a 18'
14:05 I get what you're going for here, but I'm pretty sure 1:1 contrast ratio is literally the worst possible result, because it'd mean that the darkest possible light is the same as the brightest possible.
Yeah it's not useful, but that's what the tool reports and that's how the test works - complete black (off) to white, no middleground.
Jarrod any updates on Pheonix Range laptop? I see they've been delayed for global launch in April.
Hi Jarod, this one or the legion 9i? Thanks...
😊As an Msi fan i couldn't be more satisfied. The GT77 is still incredible. Jarrod is doing so much work for us
I think because of those "fans" like you, MSI has fallen behind this time. That's what "real fans" do
You are satisfied with a price of $9,500? Are you of oil-money? Jesus, you are the problem.
Look at Apple and those stupid Ifans, they just keep saying good about Apple, and now when you buy Iphone, U buy it with stupidly high price with no charger🤷. I want good thing for U and MSI, not attacking🤷

it would be better if the battery is removable so you can enjoy its processor more while maintaining the health of your battery. this is one of the laptops on my bucket list.
I have a 7 year old gaming laptop and the battery is still fine.
It still holds charge and fully charges to 100%.
How did you maintained its health.
@@vmafarah9473 Don't let it discharge completely nor go to 100% for that matter, if you're on AC regularly don't use it, put it in storage at 85%-90% charge. Last time I tested my 7+ year old battery it lasted about 1:40 (external monitor, wi-fi, bluetooth on, browsing and office tasks, no gaming) while originally it lasted about an hour longer. 100% charge doesn't mean anything really, if you want to find out how healthy it is you should be looking at its internal resistance instead.

Even my Scar 16 has better performance values, it's amazing how this "Small" ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR 16 laptop can beat a monster like MSI GT77 Titan!!

Would you recommend MSI Titan GT77HX-008ES 64 GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 i9-13980HX 2 TB 2 TB SSD with these specs for roughly £2800?

@@vmafarah9473 7945HX is only up to 20% better in a small number of productivity workloads, for the most part it's roughly similar. In gaming it is either equal or slightly behind. Just look at how the 7900X/7950X are equal to the 7700X in gaming despite double the cache. AMD HX battery life is also quite bad, maybe even worse than Intel.
