Most people dont know this song so i dont anticipate the video will be an all time record breaker -- but for those who know it and want to play it this is GOLD!
Perhaps the most beautiful song of all time (imo). Mr. Stich captures the feeling of this song very well, including the intentional "sour" notes that Jerry used. Just strumming the chords as shown in the Garcia/Hunter Songbook challenges my skill level so this lesson is beyond me; but it's still enjoyable. For a great solo version of this song check out Warren Haynes playing it at Bonnoroo.
Oh my God, Im so excited. When Jerry sings 'Ive been to every blue light cheap motel' he is rising so high in that part of the song, just lifting off, its transcendent. This song is so beautiful, thanks Stich for putting this up, I cannot wait to watch it. I just need how to figure out how to attach money to my comment to throw you some cash, I promise to get that done at some point. I dont have any accounts linked to google, I promise to try. Your lessons are so helpful! and your taste in music is spot on. Have you done a Terrapin Station lesson? Cheers.
IAN - thank you brother! - really! I hope your day is better than any prior, please stay safe, keep playin', and above all else - do more than hear, listen. You improved my day - thanks !
Ian you are so genuine and cool - brother, I thoroughly enjoy your lessons. You knocked another one “out of the park”. I'm going to buy the chart, if only for one reason, to support you (fortunately, I also love the song). Be well. Thank you.
Alright! Here is the 7 page chart. $3.49 bit.ly/2B3iLzi It goes over the chord progression, how to play the chords in several places, the corresponding soloing ideas, scales, tones, and chromatics for each idea presented in the video. You will be able to solo all over the guitar neck with confidence with this chart. Hope you enjoy! Immediate download and emailed directly to you.
You know what, just a little over half-way in, I made note of how you use the index finger twice in succession on the G string. A subtle move, but it will keep my left hand in a consistent position. Pentatonic and modal shred madness is nigh!
Bro so money..this my favorite video so far..So much work to do..I get it all but just need to wrap my head around it..For a few hours..That B just wants to go home to E...Touch bro..
It all depends on the root, in this case yes same notes as Dsus2, but we include the open A.... that bass note really adds to the flair of the Asus4 vs a Dsus2
@@landontaylor2113 It was to me not so long ago also. It's not that difficult once one understands a couple of basic principles. Stich has some good videos as does Ian's friend Sean Daniel. Check this out: th-cam.com/video/__VtlxQZhXs/w-d-xo.html
In case this is useful? I find myself focusing so closely on what you are teaching on the fretboard that sometimes the sounds of the phrases get a bit lost, because ‘my eyes are open wider than my ears’ 😊 Perhaps it may be nice to turn the cam up above the fretboard, to help people like me ‘listen’ better at times? Love you!
I'm struggling with the C7-B7 part. I understand that we should focus on the chord tones during our solo there, but what underlying scales are we referencing?
Without getting too technical, I think for the C7 the better scale would be C Lydian Dominant, rather than just C Mixo. The difference between the scales is an F# instead of F natural.
This chord progression is beautiful! Anyone knows the theory behind the harmony? I know the B7 Is the fifht of E, maybe A/Asus could be the fourth, but whats with the E minor? And the C7? Im starting to learn how to build progressions, please help unravelling this beauty!
The song transitions between E major and E minor. Don’t get too hung up on key centers! Instead, look at the harmonic context that can apply to sections or sequences of chords, and be ready to switch contexts. A difficult transition might represent a new section, a new “key”.
I have a sick lesson idea stitch . Jerry does this stuff in the big jams . UJB. Alot it feels like he is scribbling on the canvas. I'm sure its chromatic of sorts any help?
It’s so hard to believe it’s been over 25 years since he performed live for us. My heart still aches.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written and the only teacher who could do it justice. Thank you, Ian.
Man you just keep getting better. Brilliantly worked out and explained, just loved it.

This is for the people who know😉

Quickly becoming one of my favorites!
Beautiful, heart wrenching song masterfully broken down Stich. Every time you continue to raise the level of your teaching. Well done my friend.
and when you hear that song come crying on the wind...Superb well done Ian
Have always enjoyed this video. You are amazing. Will sign up for part 2. Thanx for your insight!
Another great lesson! Thank you! So much to work with here!
Thanks Stitch, my teacher gave me an assignment this week to do some chromatic work, this video came at the right time
Beautiful song
Just awesome! Thanks

Jerry is so damn good I’ve always loved his playing
Thanks Ian
Very well structured lesson, thx Stich
Thanks for this. One of my favorite Dead tunes (next to "Eyes"). :)
Awesome video!
again, one of the best lessons ever... any chance you could cover Jack Straw in the mind of?
This is awesome ian. Thanks.
Thx dude! 👍😊🎸
Stellar, dude! :)

I already learned something new within the first few minutes: a Dsus2 can be interpreted as an Asus4, cool!
Me too. I was about to correct him, but decided to work it out first. Sure enough, Asus4 = ADE and Dsus2 =DEA
That's so crazy! God chord theory is still such an enigma to me

Fantastic lesson! Is there a good recorded or live version of this song to use as a reference?

C or B Mixolydian maybe mixodorian as well
