I've told my wife often that, like the Allman Brothers, the Grateful Dead were as much a jazz band as a blues/rock band. She finally believes me after all these years. Jerry at his best. 👍
To me Jerry was the John Coltrane of the guitar. In terms of the heart and also leaning in and just going for it man. Also the spiritual tone driving it all. The commitment to his art was unbelievable This was a treat Michael✌.
Nice seeing you too Brother David. Man, this was a great video. A deep dive into Eyes 👀. I love this tune. I need to hear em all. I couldn't click fast enough. Michael was worried the video was too long, us Heads wished it was longer😆 lol. This tune is so special and went through so many stages of development in terms of sound and dynamics (and of course the tasty solos😋). I hope we get more of these videos. Its such a great community of Heads on the Tubes💚. Always a pleasure David✌.
@@gregchamberlin9910 Tremendous video! I learn so much about music from them, and Michael’s enthusiasm is the best. His vids could never be too long 😂 and agreed, the community is awesome. Always appreciate your take on things 👌🏼
@@davidmugglebee523 Right on brother, Michael's enthusiasm is fantastic. That kind of passion is so refreshing. I enjoy your comments too David, I can see the love you have for the music and scene, its easy to love isn't it? 🤩🙂 We got great taste in music man, thats for sure😄lol.
When I first got into the Dead, I didn’t appreciate this song so much. Now, it’s one of my favorites. There is so much room for musical exploration. Thanks for this lesson, Michael. ✌🏼💀🌹
Michael, your vast knowledge of music amazes me. Just when I think I'm really making headway and feeling like I'm getting closer to mastering the guitar. You blow my mind, again and remind me that I'm barely scratching the surface. I love the channel, all your videos, and you courses. What little I've barely been able to check out, thus far. Never been a Dead fan and barely been able to listen to them much. But I'm definitely becoming a fan now. Your reaction videos are like non other, available on TH-cam. Actually breaking down the music also. While reacting to the video. Thanks for all you do. Keep up the great work. I look forward to all your talking about doing in the future, also. Sounds incredible.
This is a really impressive application of music theory. What's even more impressive is that, while no music theory slouch, Jerry fucking intuited this shit!
This video is the on point. I learned soooo much. I’ve been playing guitar for 35 years and I’ll be damned if I couldn’t figure out this tune. Ty, Michael.
That space looks incredible. What you are talking about doing with it is incredible. This Deep Dive is just awesome. I will be going through this multiple times, it feels like. Thanks for what you do, man. I have been listening to this tune for years. It is so nice to have a richer comprehension of what is happening musically, and to start to develop an awareness of some of the various alleyways for creative expression that a tune like this offers.
Sunday, putting in a new floor... listening to GD Hartford, 77' and suddenly ....boom.... notification....and boom....eyes deep dive....probably my fav song to play. Thanks Michael 😊
Thanks for this dissection, Michael! Jerry was probably the most "nuanced" player ever for me! So subtle, in a world of crash, slash, and burn guitar all around him. He wasn't ever scared to go way out on that ledge and "hunt" (your term) his way back. And he wasn't scared of pushing the chord structures, even to the point of dissonance, to emphasize certain passages. Perfectly imperfect! Details, man!
You've got it, Garcia and the Dead approached playing music with the Jazz aesthetic, which is all about pushing the chordal harmony to the breaking point.
Great explanation!! Then the second solo section it goes to Emaj7// to D/A/. Of course it changes over the years and the coda they did in the early 70's in the last jam is so spicy as well. One of the best is dp 31 8/6/74, the coda jam starts around the 10;10 mark.
Yeah, those were the best, those fuckers got a little scary, if you listen closely enough to Jerry's solos on some of them, you can hear Slipknot! starting to be born in them. LOVE IT.
Hornsby was a great addition to the band. I don't think I've ever seen anyone have more fun than Bruce does when he's playing with the guys I know it's off topic but seeing his big grin always makes me smile too
my fave dead song... always took me to the outer realms... its so much phun to play... yes bruce and jerry was a match made in heaven... im so grateful that i got to see them play together a few times... always elevated the band...
Bro, watching your enthusiasm as I'm trying to keep up is putting a huge smile on my face. This music has been such a big part of my life for decades. I decided a couple months ago that all the guitars in my studio were done collecting dust, so I started focusing and dedicating the time everyday. I've learned so much from you and this one was absolutely a joyous occasion. Thanks, man. I appreciate what you do. It makes a difference in people's lives. Much respect, bro!
Jerry seemed to always play really well next to Bruce. Michael, words can't describe how much I love these deep dives into Dead tunes. Keep 'em coming!
Another thought, a couple of years later - I wish you had picked out a 73 or 74 version of this song, with the extra key changes in the coda and the extra off-the-wall jamming. That would be interesting to look at.
This is awesome news! Love everything about this educational video,! Thank you Michael, congratulations on your killer TH-cam jam/educational studio 👏👏👏. Living the Dream !🔥
Pushing the change sounds like a very bluegrassy thing to do. Love your point about not being tied to perfection, seeking a different intent 🙏 So happy to see you teaching and playing in the barn! Congrats, thanks for all the goods at Guitargate, and have fun at those shows!
Wow, what a time to randomly think about what you've been up to and come see this so shortly after posted. I'm only a few minutes in but will give it the "deep watch" after i go grab some food :) This video is as long as a GD song :) Perfect!
I think Mayer is just playing sober... Jerry was in outer space plucking away at the stars floating around in his head. Sometimes those stars were well within reach... other times he would miss by light years. I will take that fleeting comet any day over the structured tonal commonalities Mayer delivers. Don't get me wrong... Mayer is a fantastic player! I just don't think he is as fearless and willing to reach for those out of reach stars as Jerry was. Great dive, bud!
Jerry was a once in lifetime person and musician. Beyond unique but certainly unique. Mayer is talented, cocky, strives to achieve but Jerry was so special that words fail. But I like Dead and Co and once in a while Mayer and Bob and the boys take you there.
Great Reaction bro!!! Man I can’t stress this enough… it would make my year to see Mike react to the a cappella group the Pentatonix! Many people react to them, half non-musicians and half vocal coaches. Now I know Mike isn’t a “singer” per say, but that’s not why I want to see his reaction. It’s his knowledge of theory that really peaks my interest. For all of the things the Pentatonix are good at (singing, harmonizing, performing), the most underrated is their attention to detail when arranging music. Pleeeease Michael I will pay money to see you react to Pentatonix - Evolution of Michael Jackson! Then maybe Sound of Silence if you’re so inclined. Michael has such a good ear for music and insight into structure… it would be legendary 🤘😎
Thanks! Would love a second dive into this specifically the end jam of Winterland Oct 19, 1974. The circle of 5th outro they did in the period is a theory lesson on it’s own. Never seen anyone take it on. It is a simple idea but it so cool.
