Power and the Passion - Lyrics
    People wasting away
    In paradise
Going backwards, once in a while
Taking your time, give it a try
What do you believe, what do you believe
What do you believe is true?
Nothing they say makes a difference this way
    Nothing they say will do
You take all the trouble that you can afford
At least you won't have time to be bored
At least you won't have time to be bored
Oh the power and the passion, oh the temper of the time
Oh the power and the passion
Sometimes you've got to take the hardest line
Sunburnt faces around, with skin so brown
Smiling zinc cream and crowds, Sundays the beach never a cloud
    Breathing eucalypt, pushing panel vans
    Stuff and munch junk food
Laughing at the truth, cause Gough was tough til he hit the rough
Uncle Sam and John were quite enough
Too much of sunshine too much of sky
It's just enough to make you want to cry
It's just enough to make you want to cry
Oh the power and the passion, oh the temper of the time
Oh the power and the passion
Sometimes you've got to take the hardest line
I see buildings, clothing the sky, in paradise
    Sydney, nights are warm
    Daytime telly, blue rinse dawn
Dad's so bad he lives in the pub, it's a underarms and football clubs
Flat chat, Pine Gap, in every home a Big Mac
And no one goes outback, that's that
You take what you get and get what you please
It's better to die on your feet than to live on your knees
It's better to die on your feet than to live on your knees
Oh the power and the passion, oh the temper of the time
Oh the power and the passion
Sometimes you've got to take the hardest line

You can see the loyalty to this song. Watch The Librarians. Peter Garrett does a guest appearance on the last show. Oils ain't Oils. The 3 series were hysterically funny. Robyn Butler and Wayne Hope did a brilliant job. Wayne trying to inpersonate Peter Garrett is timeless. Reminded me of the Blues.Brothers trying to get the band back together.

I first saw this on MTV. When MTV showed new music, or unlike now had 24 music function. This song got into my head. I bought the cassette at my local record shack (1980's suburban Ohio)
I didn't get into many other songs on "10-1" at first. I went with my Parents to Australia in the Summer of 1986 (Dad went for a Medical convention in Sydney - Doctor using a convo' as excuse to travel, with family) We went two weeks before to travel, mostly flying from Perth, Darwin, Adelaide, down to Hobart, Tasmania, up to Melbourne, Canberra, finally to Sydney. I was 17 years old, and Australia was an amazing experience. When I got back to domestic Ohio, and High School, the Oil's "10-1" made far more sense. The "Diesel and Dust" came out...college, "Blue Sky Mine"...eventually saw them in 1994. I know they are active, touring, have recent live and collaborative projects. I really hope they get in the Rock Hall, as they are so damn worthy. And, "Power and the Passion, on MTV made me a fan!

That’s the ultimate irony behind this song, it points out how fucked modern Australia is AND became one of the most popular songs of all time here, and yet people rarely look at the meaning of the lyrics past Peter Garrett’s funny dancing or how catchy the main guitar riff sounds. A song about how society is continually degraded and blinded to its own demise by rampant consumerism, and yet it became a shallow icon of that exact thing- consumerism.

Song just sounds like Sydney in the summer. The Oils were everywhere but I never really appreciated how amazing they were. instead of seeing Australia as an embarrassing little island and pretending to write about some other place, they saw the drama and poetry in what was actually going on in the country and wrote song after song about it. Probably not the coolest or most stylistically well fashioned band, but incredibly singular and creative with so so so many truly great songs.

41 years ago I saw Midnight Oil at The Royal Antler Narrabeen. I have to thank the boys from The Strand house at Dee Why for taking me to the gig.
It was late 1979, a warm night, people pouring jugs of iced water on each other and Peter Garrett's head, steam coming from the Lead Singer's bald cranium.
Their music and especially their lyrics have made THE OILS one of the most important Rock bands in history.
This new song ' Gadigal Land' is an instant Oils Classic.
Words cannot describe how much I love this track.
Sydney Radio station MMM played it every hour yesterday, so credit to them for that.
Before they played it the first time I was thinking " oh, I hope it's good "
I loved it from the opening chords, the thumping Drums, the throbbing Bass and Garrett's vocals delivering every word that is punching the Colonial invaders in the face.
Well done boys, this is excellent!
