      I watched both the official and performance video over a dozen times, the dance is almost hypnotic! Even if it's probably just fanservice for guys and thirsty girls 😄 I just loved that almost-kiss at the end. And yeah, All-the-things-she-said was my jam too for a while, and it's sequel. 😍

He's more well known as a variety star on Knowing Bros for his instant recall ability with songs - but people tend to forget he's a good singer and dancer as well. He's well worth knowing lol
      2nd gen songs/groups were absolutely *amazing* and I highly rec checking them out. Sistar (Queens of Summer), f(x), Rainbow, After School, Stellar, T-ara, Kara, BEG, SNSD, ugh so many good groups and that's just the tip of the iceberg...

    Just so you know that dance in Abracadabra is the dance in Psy’s “Gentlemen” video and Gain (one of the members, she’s the center, visual, vocal and main dancer) was in that video. Also JeA (the main vocal and leader) was a vocal coach on Produce 101 (1st season) Miryo (Main rapper) was on the 1st season of “Show me the Money” (Korean rap survival show) and she was on “Unpretty Rapstar” (Korean rap survival show specifically for women) and Narsha (lead vocal and lead dancer) is the first BEG member to get married. JeA was involved in the selection of the members and they all have solo music careers.

    Brown eyed girls were older (except Gain) and known for their vocals. And with their sexy concept, they were called "adult-dol" instead if Idol. But because of their solid vocal skills, they are very well respected in Korea.
    Their break through song was Abracadabra. It was really huge in Korea that year. The mv is sadly(?) not about gay love though. The kiss at the end was to kill the other girl out of jealousy (the poison pill in the mouth) because the guy cheated.
    They took a long break(4~5 yrs) and when they reunited last year. They didn't do so well. 3 of them are in their late 30s now.
    All of them had solo albums. I think Gain had the most success as a solo.
    Miryo (rapper) is the no. 1 credited female (followed by Moonbyul).
    Jea (main vocal) had a digital single this year called Greedyy featuring Moonbyul.

    • @slonmish
      @slonmish 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      that's the first time I've seen someone explaining Abracadabra as not gay xD obviously, the mv can be interpreted as the story of GaIn leaving her abusive and cheating boyfriend to Narsha, who sleeps with the man and blows him up / staging his heart attack. not saying your version doesn't work, but come on, mate :)

    "Was Korea okay with this??" Well the censorship board sure as hell wasn't lmao too gay and too sexy for it to be broadcast. Oh yes, gaycatcher was in *full force* in that relay dance. The song itself was a hit, the dance was literally iconic and everyone was doing it. (The only reason it doesn't seem to be as well known outside of Korea is because it came out in 2009 - which was a bomb year for K-pop - Gee & Genie (SNSD), Sorry Sorry (Super Junior), Replay (Shinee)... SM was *dominating* the K-pop game in 2009. However, Psy used the dance of the chorus for his MV Gentleman - and even invited Gain to be in it too.)
    BEG is known to be a more mature/sexy group - 3 of them (JeA, Miryo, Narsha) were born in 1981, and Gain is something like 5-7 years younger, so they've always been a little more sexy than some of the younger counterparts. Their MVs don't always have a dark undertone to them, and yes they didn't care what the trends were, they did themselves. Their rapper is Miryo - literally one of the best rappers in all of Korea, hands down. JeA is the one that did the first part of the high note in Sixth Sense, Gain did the second part (she's the one that you said had a really bright voice). Narsha was the one who did the 'meow' part. You might like: Brand New World (very retro sound), Warm Hole (this was.. lmao I still can't believe that they were allowed to perform this one *live* because the lyrics are super suggestive.), Kill Bill, and probably Wonder Woman for the groups. Gain's solos: Bloom, Paradise Lost.

    • @nicoler5713
      @nicoler5713 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      All of these are excellent suggestions. Warm Hole is basically just... 3 minutes of BEG telling SKorea they do not give a single f//k about "standards" and "what ladies should be singing about". I'd also recommend their SNL parody of Poker Face, because it's just them going "yeah, we had plastic surgery, what about it?" (It's called Plastic Face, it's fantastic.)

Brown eyed girl is one of a kind group. since debut they are just like what you say. they are mature and just doing their own stuff. being different. but 2nd generation is unique by them self because almost every group bring something different. SNSD....WONDER GIRL....2NE1....BIGBANG...SUPER JUNIOR...AFTER SCHOOL....BEAST....4MINUTE...SISTAR...etc have different concept and image they bring to the table. and that make almost every song they release back then is a bomb. To be honest, I think only Mamamoo out of the currently active groups really have both the attitude/concept and vocal prowess to cover a song like Sixth Sense. I love Lovelyz but they just put themselves into a situation they werent capable of doing properly. Not only does it require some great vocals, its a certain TYPE. Kei is a great vocalist but she doesnt have the right oomph for it, imo.
      At best, maybe Dreamcatcher too could do it, but idk. (And they're one of my top GGs) MAYBE Red Velvet (Wendy and Seulgi are certainly vocally capable but not sure about the right attitude for Wendy)
      Sistar was capable of it too.

All members have moved on to have solo careers but they still drop new music together every once in awhile.

    Yay finally!! BEG!! hahaha
    Gain is the one with short hair, and she is the sexy maknae as Hwasa is for Mamamoo! hahaha
    When I first saw Sixth Sense (it was 2013/2014) I was very impacted by it, because it's a very fierce song and also that high note... hahaha I also had to see it live, I think they can kinda do it, but it usually sounds wrong... When Gain gets it right, Narsha (the girl that finishes the thing) doesn't get it right and vice versa
    Back in the day they were one of the best vocal groups in general, as groups have this tendency of half of them being good singers and the other not so well...

    In case you were wondering, these are their positions!:
    Jea (does the "hit that high" part) - leader, main vocalist
    Miryo (does the rap part) - main rapper
    Narsha (the one in the sandy room with the leopard print clothes) - lead vocalist, lead dancer
    Gain (the one that reminded you of Hwasa) - sub vocalist, main dancer, face of the group, maknae
    Brown Eyed Girls debuted back in 2006 and are considered an incredibly iconic and influential group in Korea. They are sort of similar to Mamamoo in the way that they are a vocal based group with a strong rapper and prioritize talent over visuals. Some other songs by them that I recommend would be Kill Bill, Warm Hole, L.O.V.E., and my personal favorite Cleansing Cream. All of the members also have solo music as well, with Gain being the most successful out of the group (I Bloom, Paradise Lost, and Apple if you are interested in listening to her solo music). The group is still together and don't seem like their gonna disband any time soon but nowadays they only have a comeback about every 2-4 years.

    Brown Eyed Girls was a vocal group and actually did R&B when they debuted. They transitioned into more pop music and became trend setters. They are still active and released an album of covers last year I believe. They usually release full albums every 2-3 years. Their freedom happened because the label they were under was an indie label. The leader Jea actually formed the group. Narsha was a friend from high school and she sought out Miryo because she was a well known rapper at the time. Miryo writes all her own raps in all their songs. I think she has the most lyric copyrights to her name out of any other female artist in Korea (if not, she is close). Their last member Gain is actually 6 years younger than the other members and was chosen from an audition.

    if you like these, I would highly recommend the group Sunny Hill who followed their theme of eccentricity. Especially "Midnight Circus", "Grasshopper Song", and "Pray". The first two being dance songs and the third being a ballad. But all three being great commentary on society.

    Brown Eyed Girls really helped push the envelope in South Korea with "Abracadabra", especially since 3 of the members were much older than the age of most idols at the time, so they weren't afraid of doing a much more risque concept. And then "Abracadabra" blew up and pretty much everyone knows the song and its iconic "arrogant dance".
    They debuted in 2006, and are the longest-running girl group without any member changes, even releasing music at the start of this year! The leader, JeA, actually scouted out each of the other members. She had done some OST work herself. She picked Narsha, who she remembered as being a good singer from high school, and Miryo, who had been a well-known rapper from the "Honey Family", a group from the late 90s or so. Ga In was scouted when she failed an audition and met Narsha in the bathroom afterward, and was invited to join. Fun fact, Narsha has a small star tattoo on her right wrist, and may be the first female idol - or idol in general - to have such a visible tattoo. Miryo is the OG female rapper and imo the most iconic female rap voice in K-pop. Also, Ga In really defied beauty conventions at the time for her signature single-eye line look, compared to the "ideal" double-eye lines.
    "Sixth Sense" was a statement against censorship, and is super iconic especially after the cover of it in Queendom. Yes, the members were vocals-first, and this is more apparent in their pre-"Abracadabra" songs and their ballads, in particular "Cleansing Cream" (released right after "Sixth Sense") and "Abandoned" (released last year!). Also, this is probably the best live performance of those high notes: th-cam.com/video/3QG80egJ6hc/w-d-xo.html (JeA first, then Ga In, then Narsha)

  • @TheyMightBeJenny
    @TheyMightBeJenny 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You have quite the ride ahead of you. BEG were (are, they're still active) popular, trendsetting, and controversial all at the same time. They paved the way for groups like mamamoo. Their early stuff is a lot of mid 2000s sounding R&B with some bubblegum pop thrown in. They really broke through with Abracadabra, which is universally known in Korea and easily one of the top 3 defining songs of 2nd gen kpop. They've all done solo work as well, Gain being the most prolific (and provocative). They're all vocally talented (except for the rapper who doesn't sing at all) and I think you'll love them. I go back and forth between BEG and Mamamoo as my ultimate fave group.
    Edit: to be clear, the rapper is extraordinarily talented, one of kpops best imo, she just doesn't sing (unlike moonbyul, who both raps and sings). Didn't want anyone to get it twisted, I love miryo.

    If you like mamamoo you for sure will like BEG. They are absolute vocal queens. They are also older than your average GG but still going strong (they're all in their 30s and releasing phenomenal bops).
    Also they are the most credited girl group in kpop EVER (meaning most registered songs w the members as lyricists/composers/producers). Miryo, the rapper, is a BEAST, she's the most credited female lyricist in kpop and produces so much of their music! A queen.
    With the release of travel, mamamoo are now the second most credited female group in kpop only after BEG. Really excellent taste to stan them both because they're both dripping with raw talent 👏👏👏👏

The girl with bright voice, Gain, has many awesome solo songs. And you really need to listen to a cover from JeA, Despacito - JeA with Juwon Park (Offical Video) (Cover), this is the best despacito cover ever!!!

    Tbh, before Mamamoo, BEGs were known for their vocal in kpop. The group's mvs (both solo or not) were dark and spooky.
    If you're interested, you could check out Gain's or Narsha's solo song like "paradise lost" (for its production) and "bbi ri bba bba", both mvs of these song are just spooky and a lot of Gain's songs are bold sexual liberation songs which i loved while Narsha's vocal is quite good.
    And yeah before Hwasa, Gain along with Hyuna, Hyolyn were known to be sexy icons.
    And yes, they were trend-setter in the past, i remember when they came out with abracadabra, suddenly every girlgroups changed their style from cute to sexy lol

    BEG is one of the most revolutionary KPOP groups. They were daring and pushed the boundaries in KPOP. They were one of the few mature groups in the sea of bright, young and bubble gum pop. They were all in their mid-20s when they debuted, which wasn't common as most groups debut in their teens. And they were successful. They have great vocals and house one of the best Korean female rappers.

    Brown Eyed Girls haven't given a f what the korean public thought for the past 14 years...and have been thriving. They left their record label in 2015 and unlike other groups who would of had to disband....took their name with them cause they're bosses.
    Fun fact, rapper Miryo is a legend and an underground rapper from the underground group honey family.
    They have always been amazingly progressive. Check out their video "brave new world" 2015 celebrating free thought, the EXTREMELY CONTROVERSIAL "warm hole" 2015 about female sexuality and the LGBT themed "wonder woman" 2019 (as three of the members hit 40 years old), as proof of that.

    And yeah they were one of the original bad girl / girl crush groups, thats so popular right now.
    And yeah the first video was banned from TV because it was that sexy. They had to cut the part where they dance on the floor for it to be broadcasted.
    They were popular at that time, but don't know if it was controversial. But yeah they definitely influenced aaaaaaaa lot of the GGs after them. They even from time to time do some things today. Some of them also released solo stuff that's worth checking out 😊

    Brown Eyed Girls debuted as an R&B, soul vocal group.
    This is their debut stage [ Came close(2006): th-cam.com/video/v0kNf7WTGeA/w-d-xo.html & Second(2006): th-cam.com/video/qQZDhPVEpRY/w-d-xo.html ]
    and this is the first dance song [ L.O.V.E(2008) th-cam.com/video/k5abFrvxLlU/w-d-xo.html ]
    The main stream of Korea has turned into a dance song with dance, and since then they have released dance songs. As the songs gained huge popularity, they have developed like current idol groups. They performed cute dance songs before Abracadabra and were able to make a successful image change again, starting with the Abracadabra song.

    I love BEG! They are still one of my favorite groups. Also as a Mamamoo fan, I have always thought that MMM is like the Brown Eyed Girls of the 3rd gen. 2 groups with a mature image, amazing vocals, great rapping, concepts/comebacks that a out of the norm, and both groups freely do what they want.
    BEG debuted in 2006 (at a later age than most kpop idols with the exception of member Gain) as vocal R&B/ballad group and at first chose to not appear in the media so people would focus on their vocal talent rather than they're visuals. As music started to trend away from R&B are more towards pop they transitioned. Abracadabra was a huge hit in Korea though the video was rated 19+ and they had to alter parts of their choreography so they could perform it on tv.
    As for song recommendations: I got fooled by you (older R&B song), love, cleansing cream, brave new world and wonder woman.

  • @joysotic488
    @joysotic488 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Abracadabra is on my permanent playlist. Yes, they were very risque for that time which is why the MV is rated 15 and above. That hip dance is so popular and iconic that Psy put it in his "Gentleman" choreography and even put the maknae of Brown Eyed Girls, Ga-In in the music video.

  • @audreylim5264
    @audreylim5264 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Austin, you don't know how much of a surprise when I saw this title. I'm a huge fan of BEG and used to follow their every comeback until I got too busy to follow up with Kpop, but I was obsessed with them and the one with short hair specifically. Her name's Son Ga-in and I'd say personality-wise, she's more like Wheein.
    You asked if these songs were iconic, yes they were. Every kpop idols grew up listening to them in a way, and MMM was comparably the "new BEG". BEG debuted as a vocal group, if you check out their first and second album (my personal favourite), you'd find a lot of vocal-heavy songs. You also asked if the songs back then were dark, yes, they were. 2nd gen had a lot of dark themed songs and I really liked that hehe
    Abracadabra was in their 3rd album and the transformation between the first 2 albums and that comeback shocked everyone. It basically was the push that got them worldwide recognition. Their popularity grew and they released SIGN then Sixth Sense. But I think they had really bad luck with their management company, so they missed the chance to go even bigger. Not to mention they had their KILL BILL comeback after 2 years of solo promotions. That really didn't work in their favour since they were really riding the high with their previous promotions.
    I feel like while they're still very popular and well known in Korea, their international fans, like me, have died out a little. It's quite disheartening because they did start out as a group that's different from the trend and slowly, they sort of lost their colour, imo (or maybe created a new one is a better choice of word). I still love and respect them for what they do though, but I wouldn't say I'm a fan of their songs now.

    I've been into kpop for about 13 years now. I was a hard core multifan at the beginning of hallyu wave of kpop (2007, mostly all 2nd gen. idol groups, and a special place for DBSK in my heart). Less now because I find most new groups (not all) are starting to sound/look/act the same and don't have that unique charm. They're talented but they don't give off a unique flare. The k-pop music scene has definitely drastically changed since the start of the hallyu wave. Different trends/sounds/style as the years go by as can be expected. I feel like the 2nd gen. groups (brown eyed girls, GG, 2ne1, etc) had a sound/look/charisma/aura that cannot be replicated though. idk it's hard to explain but I do miss the era of 2nd generation. They were catchy, weird songs but they were unique.

    brown eyed girls started out as a ballad group so they are all good singers. jea is actually a vocal coach. but you can imagine they were struggling as a ballad group so they slowly went into pop and totally switched it up to something extremely sexy like abracadabra which was their breakout song(due to the hip sway dance that became iconic). I actually like a lot of their ballads but not as much their newer(relatively speaking lol) pop songs.
