    I have a big creative challenge tomorrow and the imposter syndrome hit me with full force today. Your video couldn't have come at a better time for me, very helpful and touching. Also, what you say about surrender reminds me a lot of buddhist approaches from people like Alan Watts, Dean Sluyter or Eckhart Tolle. Confidence really isn't about pretending, but letting go of all attempts to impress people and instead make peace with yourself, so your words really resonated with me. Thank you!

    I've read, watched, and meditated on 10,000 things about imposter syndrome. The point at 5:00 about how our mask is internal, that others have been seeing me, not the mask, all along, is the most powerful point I've ever encountered to battle imposter syndrome. Thank you thank you thank you.

    I'm also an extreme introvert. I will start to tremble when more than 2 persons focus on my speech. Still working on it. Thanks Chris. You are my inspiration.

    As a self taught designer I always felt this type of pressure. Watching this, and your interview with Ben on the "I Wish I Knew This When I Started" video. It really helps to know I am not the only one. As usual always amazing content. I swear when I am back working in design I will make a big donation. I have learned so much on this channel.

    I definitely have Chris Do as a role model, because from this and a few other videos I got the impression that he's been very introvert, but has overcome that by working on himself. I just relate to that.
    I used to think it was impossible for me to change and be a better person, because I was so clingy to my past self. But once I started letting it go, I noticed I change. One of my favourite quotes is "When I let go of who I am, I become who I might be".

    This is indeed an important one to learn from. I too identify as an introvert and have found that pushing myself to do the things that felt uncomfortable (like public speaking) would not only help my career but most importantly empower myself. After 3 speaking engagements this year I know I'm not there yet in terms of how I would like to sound, but I know I found the courage to get up there and say something that was important me. It's helped identify strengths and weaknesses to build on and ask for honest feedback from the audience on the spot. A common thread was the emphasis on the personal story and narrative.

    This was super helpful. I can usually be very open about my weaknesses in front of people I’ve already gotten to know better
    but I still struggle around new people…
    Gotta stop thinking and just DO.
    As I’m writing this I’m realizing I’m stuck in my head cause I’m thinking more of myself than of the people that I need to help…
    I Gotta just go for it.
    I relate so much to Chris. He’s one of my favorite teachers of all time. Thank you 🙏❤️

      That's a really good point - I feel it's actually easier to be open around new people as it won't be biased by the pattern I interacted with people I'm familiar. My tip is to share 1 or 2 learnings on things I worked, and there are usually struggles, and once I shared it, usually I found it's not just me.

    This video hits home! There are allot of public speakers that tells you that confidence is a skill that you can master but most of the famous ones are extraverts, so as a mild introvert you blame it on being that. I didn't place you on the very introverted side and couldn't imagine you having trouble public speaking. You are well articulate person that seems like a natural at it. Your story of your growth is a true inspirational one! Even for a camera operator this channel is gold!

    This is exactly what I found out about not felling like an imposter. especially the part of being at peace with yourself/your mind and the also the part aboout reliquish what you want to gain. It's not always easy to remind myself about all this things so this is a good reminder. Also it can help a lot to get a permit from an outside person to do what you feel is right, but you will sometimes question.

    I love Chris Do, he has such a disciplined fire quality to him yet also spiritually in-tune in mindset. Listening and respecting your true self vs an image of yourself is something I have thought about before, and also surrendering is actually not a bad thing sometimes. We have a negative connotation with the word surrender but it can actually help a lot in terms of freeing ourselves from a false sense of control or self image, unrealistic expectations in doing something, etc. Love it~

    So, the imposter syndrome comes from what you say and what you do being misaligned. I can relate to being an extreme introvert too. I was raised by an extreme extravert, though, so I have learned to "fake it" around select groups of people, but going it alone and being confident while talking about what I do just makes me fall to pieces. I appreciate this take on things. It's not about faking it, it's about pulling back the curtain and letting people see that you're human.

    My confidence was recently shattered when a client fired me during the process of a designing logo for a rebrand. I was following everything I thought the client wanted and actually completed the another round of drafts they requested, however I did not get to send them because they decided to go with another designer in their country. The client wants to pay me some of what I have worked for but I would still like to present the work anyways. Should I accept the money? Should I event have the urge to present those final drafts? I think my ego was bruised and I have hope that they would change their mind. My confidence definitely needs to rebound, especially since this is a new endeavor that I am just now coming back too. Thanks for posting this topic and keep up the good work. I am confident your content is helping more people than just mere mortals such as myself.

    "By relinquishing power, you gain it." I know this to be true and have seen it work in my life. The question for me then becomes: "What is the right balance and attitude towards being assertive, versus surrendering - when a situation in, say, work comes up? An example might be a co-worker or boss giving a certain attitude or perspective which we do not think will lead to success. How to know when to push back (with choice words and emotions) and react, or to let it sink in? I guess it is about letting it sink in first, and then reacting from a state of calmness. Does this sound right? The challenege then is how to be quick at this? When someone asks you something, you don't always have 5 minutes or even 10 seconds to react; you have to be quick. How to be in a state of alert, constructive surrender in a work environment. What a tough challenge this is, especially in today's faster-paced world. Another reason why meditation and self-analysis is so important in my opinion - no matter your field, but especially for creatives. Any thoughts on this? Thank you for the content Chris.

    Thank you so much for putting this up Chris. I was recently made redundant and although I have managed to find work fairly quickly, now that I am self-employed, I still very much suffer from imposter syndrome. Tbh I think I've have had it even longer than that, as a result of my time in local politics during my early 20's.
    Anyway. I have an interview Wednesday, my second in as many weeks (the CEO of this company passed on my details to his wife's advertising agency, who then asked me in for the previous interview), but I am terrified that I am going to choke it in a similar fashion to the previous interview. Let me tell you, it got a tad awkward on more than one occasion!
    As a type 4 ENFP I can go between bouts of extreme self doubt to what can only be described as 'special snowflake syndrome'. I've recently bought a book to study my personality type and its been useful trying to find ways to navigate through these periods of self doubt. Thing is... although it has helped, it's still a struggle trying to overcome these feelings in light of my recent redundancy, as you probably see above.
    Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you again for the video, it's easy to forget that other people might be in a similar boat. I'm going to try and take the lesson to ❤, and hopefully I'll smash the interview instead 😉

    Summary:-
    Feeling out of character and starts to act squirly.
    EGO is the gap that seprates us from our better future self. We need to let it go to learn and accept the values others give. It doesn't matter of the other here is your student, younger in age, or less skilled. Always accept and be greatfull for the value.
    This is the sign that you are not being who you actually are. So we need to be ourselves and shouldn't care whether others accept you or not.
    By relinquishing authority we gain authority
    By relinquishing power we gain power
    By relinquishing influence we gain influence

    Hey Chris, thank you for your Videos. I keep getting to know new perspectives. Perspectives that also makes me think about how I can improve my personality. I've heard the following quote in the past: „Fake it until you make it“. I interpreted that as an imitation. Would it be correct to assume that this is a matter of an imposter syndrome?

    • @Bearliu
      @Bearliu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for sharing and I had som similar feeling. But now my understanding on "fake it until you make it" is more about actions. Actions can change feelings, and so it will change mindsets. This saying encourage people to do something when they are not sure (having an imposter syndrome), and when doing stuff, it will feel different - quite similar as workout. All you need to do is just put gear on and do a few reps :)

    Chris I know it's been a while since this vid came out but is there any way you could recommend any books on topic, that helped you?

    I can imagine Chris ranting on TH-cam for making the user thumbnails circular. thefutur doesn't fit anymore.
    What do you think about the new TH-cam interface design guys? :)

      Malaz Halabi I didn't notice. Depending on who you are, I think youtube loads a different site. My son remarked how different my interface was compared to his.

    If I'm being who I am, then how can I become better? Won't I always say: "Oh that's not who I am. I can't do public speaking. That's not the real me." ?

      @thefutur  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ARM Cezar own who you are. Do things that scare you. Not mutually exclusive ideas.

      The Futur Appreciate the answer but does that mean that by putting myself out there I can transform myself from an introvert to an extrovert?

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no. i'm not sure. what i meant is that if you fear being a fraud, the best way to overcome that is to disarm people. if you're nervous, tell them you're nervous.

    • @armcezar8106
      @armcezar8106 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh sorry. What I wanted to ask was something long-term. Like changing who we are. Or better yet, becoming a better version of ourselves. "Better" being, of course, subjective. But that's also a great takeaway! Thanks again!

    i had a client who is a creative person and as chris said "creative people are the worst client" ever

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      and...? we prefer working with business people so our skills don't overlap. the one exclusion is musicians. they're fun to work with. but working for another >frustrated< creative who thinks they know what they want, and wants to control the entire process is no fun. general rule of thumb.

      Thrifty Ultra you have a track in mind?

    • @thriftyultra4057
      @thriftyultra4057 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest, I don't. But since you are asking, personally I wouldn't use any background music at all. It feels unnecessary to me in this video. But you know better, of course.

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      honestly, i don't. i let each editor try what they think is right. sometimes i might not agree, but i think it's important to let each person working on a project have autonomy over their work. since music is very subjective, i don't want to micromanage that.
