  • At a Catholic Conference in Rome, President Oaks Offers Four Ways to Strengthen Religious Freedom.
"I call for a global effort to defend and advance the religious freedom of all the children of God in every nation of the world," President Oaks said.
At Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 - just a couple of miles from the Vatican - President Dallin H. Oaks of the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called for a global effort to protect religious freedom for all people.
This was the second time in as many years that a leader of the Church of Jesus Christ was invited to speak at the Notre Dame Religious Liberty Summit. Elder Quentin L. Cook participated last year at the conference in Indiana.

It is vitally important for everyone to be able to practice their religion freely, as long as it doesn't oppress someone else's freedom to worship, or not to worship according to the dictates of their own conscience.
Of course people sometimes do horrible things in the name of religion, but this is not what religious freedom is. That is "religious" tyranny, or "religious" oppression, which is what Jesus Christ was strongly opposed to. Christ didn't force anyone to follow him, but instead tried to bless all mankind. In fact if all of us would use the teachings of Jesus Christ as an anchor to our faith, religious beliefs, and practices, the world would be a much better place! For example there wouldn't be any horrible things done in the name of religion, if people would love their enemies, do good to them they hate them, and pray for them that despitefully use them and persecute them.
God bless you who ever you are, and wherever you live to have religious freedom!

Despite getting up there in age, Pres Oaks is still just as sharp as he’s always been. The world faith community needs to come together. I think we’re slowly getting there.

Religions must also teach their adherents to not form governments that trample the rights of secular people. That is a more common threat to freedom, the world over, given that most of the world is religious and enforces religious laws, sometimes under pain of death. The greatest threats to religious freedom are the methods by which religion chooses to assert itself. Two way street.

He's not saying to enforce religion under pain of death.

      Hi Dan,
There is a big difference between religious freedom and oppression in the name of religion. For example in Christ's time the Pharisees and scribes tried to use their religion to bully others, but Christ taught the real way to use religion. Our Savior was the ultimate teacher of how we should have religious freedom!
"But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;"
      -Matthew 5:44
Just because people sometimes use religion to bully, and even kill others, that certainly doesn't make all religion bad.
In fact if everyone would anchor their life on this simple scripture to love everyone, the world would be a much much better place. This is just one of the many teachings that Christ taught, that if we fully practiced, there would be no hatred in the world anymore.
      God bless you brother!

Although I wish this entire speech was easier to listen for those who saw this online, I am grateful for the opportunity President Oaks had in addressing Religious Liberty. I am glad he was a positive witness for God, Jesus Christ, and for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who are striving to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ. ☺❤🕊📜🖋🦅
