They might even have started dreaming of the two timelines plan then, thinking that even if Klay fell off as hard as D Rose, that huge contract would handicap the roster to help them tank and build depth through the draft, probably in the 10th-22nd pick range. Whether you love or hate the franchise, I really liked that they showed respect to a guy who had already helped them win 3 championships, instead of being opportunistic and signing him to a cheaper deal when his stock had hit rock bottom. It's part of why the 2022 team was so easy to root for. That's the kind of employer we all want to have.
