  • In honor of World Mental Health Day (which was on the 10th), I'm sharing with you all my own mental health story and the struggles I've had with depression over the course of my life. I'm hoping to break down barriers and destigmatize talking about mental health and how we talk about treatment and accepting this very difficult element of ourselves. Plus which, I'd like to educate people out there on the effects of my own mental illnesses to better be of service to their own friends.

    As a therapist, I wanted to thank you for helping to advocate for mental health care. "You don't have to be sick to get better," is commonly how I talk about the benefits of therapy for all of us simply struggling to be human on this Earth. Stigma around mental health remains the biggest obstacle for people seeking care and support, but videos like this are going to help chip away at that. Thank you.

      @DrexFactor  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      TOTALLY! There was originally a line in this video that unfortunately got cut urging people seeking help that they do so before they get to a dangerous place as it's much easier to deal with rebuilding a house that's not in the process of burning down, so to speak. Thank you so much for your kind words and feedback...I wish it were as easy to talk about mental health as it is peoples' dietary preferences/restrictions and hopefully creating dialog like this can help create steps toward that eventual goal.

    Thank you for sharing! It’s nice to know that none of us are alone in our experiences. I have PTSD and depression, and most of the people that I interact with on a daily basis would never know. Like you said, people assume they know what depression looks like. I support people taking the meds they need. I avoid medication for myself. Partially fear, for me as well. The doctor put me on the 2 safest options on the market and I had really horrible reactions to both, including a medical emergency. It was severe and scary, and we learned that I’m one of those 1% of people that have severe and allergic reactions to them. I’m now unwilling to try more. So, I explore alternative options and just keep swimming!

    It's very brave of you to speak to openly about this issue. I never could. I just keep it too myself and isolate myself from the world. This November I will be 48 years old and wondering what to do with the rest of my life. All my greatest fears are still ahead of me. I just hope I have the strength to make it through all of this.

    I love the specificity of this video so far. The ten point scale, and the different variations of how depression shows itself is fascinating, and so very relatable. I love the insight into therapy sessions. Also, it shows how much work you put into yourself as an individual. This video is awesomesauce. Thanks for sharing

    • @DrexFactor
      @DrexFactor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The scale was definitely an interesting way to frame it and something that I think is going to be helpful going forward in realizing points when I may need to ask for help. Thank you so much for watching and for your feedback!

    We lost a friend last year to suicide, and most people didn't even spot the signs. Talking about it openly is definitely the way forward! I know so many people struggling through it in their own way, but a problem shared is always better than one kept to yourself. This is a wonderful video, you have nothing to feel ashamed of and I'm sure everyone watching this is feeling the same as I am. Honoured that you've allowed us in

    I don't depress that much because I didn't isolate myself with others, and it turned out I made a lot of trouble for others and for me later to realize :P good thing I still have friends understood and accept that

    I basically learned all my poi spinning from your awesome videos, so you definitely made my life a lot better. Without you there would be many people who would have never picked up poi or got where they are now. And I am 100% sure that many feel the same way. I'm hoping that by talking frankly with you all about my mental illnesses it will give others who suffer from them more agency to speak about their own. I really want to remove the stigma around both having and talking about mental health and make it something that we talk about as matter of factly as peoples' dietary restrictions or accessibility issues.

    I swear it felt like you were explaining myself to me, I haven't had suicidal attempts but have had thoughts, thankfully I've got some great mates that have found ways to pull me back from that darkness. I get the isolation and social interaction too, it's hard and I hate it, I find it really difficult to actually talk to others, sort of always been like that and it's something I haven't gotten my head around, every now and again that disappears and I can't shut up lol but then I feel bad that I spoke too much. However at the end of the day I feel like I'm a lot better mentally than I was a few years ago, so that's a plus.
    I'm glad you shared this, and I really hope it helps out others that are going through it too. Peace and take care!

    I had a terrible mental health crisis 5 weeks after 'recovering' from major emergency surgery. I nearly died, all because appendix ruptured whilst drs twiddled their thumbs thinking my swollen abdomen and blood poisoning 'might be covid.' Sheer incompetence lead to the awful experience giving me PTSD and left me angry and yet terrified. What shocked me is the nonexistent help, especially in covid. I got PTSD as I was left in agony and got sepsis because the drs didn't want to remove my appendix unless I got a negative covid result. So they left me with sepsis until that negative result came back. The awful pain...the inhuman treatment.
    Afterwards I nearly lost my job I was suicidal and a physical mess. Drs offer no talking therapy and just tossed pills at me. I did not do well on them. Drs were hands off and I still haven't seen a dr since my surgery 8 months ago. They just talk on the phone. And they really don't care. It's awful
