The voice is hard to understand. I just got a kit of 1shot as a gift. I am looking to use for my goldleafing to clean up the lines. What reducer is good?
Hello, sorry about the voice but it is what it is and I’m not changing it now. Reducers, I mostly use chromaflo for pinstriping but sometimes use the low temp reducer when it’s really cold. You can use mineral spirits but I find that makes the paint sort of slippery. If you need to clear over your work, add hardener to the paint and use high temp reducer but be aware the paint will dry very quickly even in the brush. I hope this helps, thank you for watching. If you’ve any other questions let me know. Have fun 👍
@@PaintySniffers hardener to the paint? I thought just clearing over the pinstripe would seal the deal. Im working on my motorcycle tank and added gold leaf after wetsanding the clearcoat again. I plan on clearing it after pinstriping the goldleaf edges
Clearing over 1shot can be tricky, it’s an enamel (oil based paint) and can wrinkle up under the clear coat. Anything that I need clearing over I use a little hardener in it and leave to fully cure for a week (or longer if I can), then a few “dust coats” of clear and leaving to dry before hitting it with a wet coat. It’s solvents in the clear that does it.
@@PaintySniffers if i use a hardener as you stated before clearcoating how long should the enamel stay to dry before clearcoating? If its over 24 hours i scuff the enamel with a grey scotch brite pad for the clear to stick?

Most of these videos I’m using Dibond or Alupanel, it’s two thin aluminium sheets with a plastic core, it’s light weight, strong and coated both sides. It’s available at building supplies places or sign materials shops. Thank you for watching, have fun.
The brush should work exactly the same for left handed people but there are brushes made specifically for left handers. Google "Von Dago southpaw brushes" and you'll find them. Hope this helps and thank you for watching.
Hi, the panel in this video is Alupanel, it's a sign making material. Most sign supply shops should be able to supply you some. Any old car panel or painted panel should be good for practicing on, it really doesn't matter that much as long as paint sticks to it, it's smooth and you can hold it still. I hope this answers your question? Thank you for watching. Stay safe, have fun and Merry Christmas 👍
Good morning Andrew. Clean your brushes in mineral spirits or something similar, gently pat them dry with some paper towel, then work some neatsfoot oil into the hairs and store your brushes laying flat. I think i covered that in the video, let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching and have fun.
Hello, I’ve never tried it so couldn’t really say a definite yes or no. I wouldn’t even know if it would damage the brushes. Enamel paint is the most common paint used in pinstriping, urethane paint is sometimes used and I’ve heard some people are now using acrylic paints. You would have to research which brushes are compatible with other paints. Let me know if you try it and tell me how it goes. Good luck and have fun 👍
Depends on temperature and humidity but normally touch dry in about an hour and fully cured in a few days to a week. If you’re painting on leather it can take forever to dry. There are different reducers and additives that can speed up or slow down drying as well. I know right, loads of stuff and no definite answer to your question, really sorry about that. Thank you for watching and taking time to comment, it really is appreciated.
@@PaintySniffers I was having my new 4Runner pin-striped with 3 colors (yellow/orange/red) - slightly wider stripes in a straight line down each side of the vehicle. Just curious how long it needs to typically dry. He was painting one color strip per day - so will have my vehicle for 4 days.
Talk to your pinstriper and ask about drying times and aftercare, they’ll let you know. I personally recommend using a good quality wax after about a week, not a polish. Thank you for supporting your local pinstriper and getting the job done properly.
@@PaintySniffers thank YOU for taking the time to answer my questions! I much preferred a painted pinstripe over a vinyl decal. This 4Runner will be carefully maintained - absolutely waxing her well before winter sets in!

For pinstriping or teaching? Prices depend on many things like what you want, what is it on, where the pinstriper has to travel to, how busy the pinstriper is, how many colours you want etc. Generally prices are agreed after a face to face chat and everybody knows what's expected. I know this doesn't really answer your question (I don't like trying to price my art). Thank you for watching 👍
I’m a real beginner. This is very help full I will be asking a lot of questions. I’m a metal sculptures and do what ever love rat rods and more. I want to move up to pinstripes. 🤔🤔think I’m to old? Well 130.00 Amazon I’m in. Very informative and thanks .
Hi Greg, welcome to the wonderfully addictive world of fun that is pinstriping, you're never too old to learn something new. Feel free to ask as many questions as you like and I'll try to answer as many as I can (replies can sometimes take a while). Have fun 👍
How do you come up with cool designs? That's what I struggle with learning to pinstripe. I understand basic concepts like mirroring, teardrop shapes, the basic line types, and even understand things like not leaving open ended lines. I can look at pro pinstriping and think this or that design looks cool, but I can't seem to figure out the style. Is it just years of practice coming up with actual designs that have that right feel to them, or are there staples of "good" designs that separate them from the bad that aren't basics?
I wish I knew a quick answer to this, I think you’re on the right track with studying other people’s designs and working out what works and what doesn’t. I take a panel and just free style lines on it, not worrying about symmetry or anything, just making shapes, connections and patterns. Then I’ll look and see if there’s anything that works, lines I like and things I don’t. You can take a while to find your style or you could stumble upon it by a happy little accident. If I think of anything else then I’ll let you know. Thank you for watching and a great question that’s got me thinking 👍
@@PaintySniffers Thank you for replying so quickly. Personally I've been playing with designs on a whiteboard. I know it's different than actually using a paint and brush, but it's also a lot cheaper than using paint and buying panels and things and easier to start over if I don't like what I'm doing.
@@MysticJhn I find that drawing designs doesn't work for me, I much prefer the flow I get with the brush and getting more practice with the brush is a bonus. I do know a few people that like to draw out the whole design before painting, they like to see what they're going to get before committing to paint.
@@PaintySniffers Well to be perfectly honest, I haven't painted a single thing yet, not even practice. Haven't so much as bought a brush for it. In my head, there's no point in investing into pinstriping if I can't even doodle cool designs. I feel like learning the actual brush control would be the easier part.
Your design style would normally evolve while you’re learning brush control but I can see where you’re coming from. As long as you’re having fun and enjoying being creative, that’s the main thing 👍
Really great videos and cool work. I’m practicing with sword style brushes (0, 00, 000 and 0000), and a couple scrollers. I really want to master the swords but I have a hard time controlling flares on my curves. The lines go thin to thick to thin again. I think it’s a combination of clumsy rolling of the brush, and maybe also inconsistent distance from the work surface. I’ll keep practicing, but wondering if you have any tips on how to manage the “rolling” for smoother results?
Hi jay3361, thanks for watching and the question. Advice on rolling the brush.... Try larger radius curves at first, rolling the brush slightly in the direction of the curve and lifting the handle of the brush up so there is less "hair" on the panel. Practice that and then as you get used to it and cleaner lines, try slightly tighter curves. I use my little finger to steady my hand and keep control the distance from the work surface. I may do another video on curves, maybe. Keep practicing and having fun 👍
@@PaintySniffers Hi there...just wanted to circle back with an update. I think I've resolved that the biggest issue is that I don't always effectively match the speed and direction of the brush with the spin. I have a tendency to spin too much, too early. Working on curves of varied length and sharpness of the turns helps--and I find that if I slow down and really watch the brush--watching to ensure that I'm pulling the bristles through the curve and keep the track consistent, I get good results. So your advice is right on. Thanks again. I'll keep practicing.
Thank you for watching. What Mack brush is it? If it's a pinstriping brush like I'm using here then that's fine, I would suggest a smaller size for deigns though as a size 1 pulls quite a wide line when I use it. I use Mack series 10 pinstriping brushes sometimes, usually a size 00 or 000. Keep practicing and having fun, I'll have some new videos up soon.

Yeah, I generally pallet away from the paint pile towards a cleaner area of paper, when I'm working on vehicles or bigger panels I will change my pallet a few times as it gets sticky or if I'm running out of clean space. Many peoples palleting techniques vary, I used to pallet between my fingers on my left hand but apparently that's bad for your health, it's just what you like or get used to doing, Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. @@1-shotslinger108 Yeah, those were great days, part of me wishes they could bring it back but I don't think it would be the same if they did. Are you still painting? Where do you post your work these days?
Hello, I use white spirits (mineral spirits) to clean my brushes and then soak the hair in a mineral oil to preserve the hair and stop the enamel paint from drying in the heel of the brush. I hope this answers your question and thank you for watching.
Hello, it’s an xcaliber brush, size OOOO. The first shot in this video shows the name on the handle of the brush. I hope you found this video helpful. Have fun.
No, it's just a centre line with a vertical line either side of it about 1.5-2 inches out and a couple of horizontal lines for reference. I don't like a complete grid, too much pencil to clean up after you've done painting. Most of the time I'll just use a single centre line or nothing at all. Thank you for watching and commenting.
The background music is more of a distraction, than an enhancement. The vocoder voice is also irritating and difficult to understand. Some valid points but not much help for me, as a novice.
Just goes to prove I can’t please everybody. Thank you for the feedback, if I ever do an updated version I’ll try a bit harder. Thanks for watching and commenting. Have fun and good luck 👍
Also, what about pinstriping is it you need more instruction about, is there one particular thing you’re struggling with? If you would like something explained or demonstrated all you have to do is ask.
@sll-tt6bj in this video it’s probably an xcaliber brush in a size OOO or OOOO, I use them a lot for design stuff. There’s a chance it could be a Mack series 10 in a size OOO as I use them a lot as well. Either of these brushes a great for this kind of design work. Great video. Could you tell me what is that black surface that you use? About the stabilo pencil, is it a regular one, like an 2HB for instance? Have you got another name for the mineral spirits? Just because where I live english is not our mother tongue. I reckon it is a fluid with a strong odor that's used to wipe off paint, like you dip a rag into that liquid and then wipe the areas you want to strip the paint off. Is that it? Thank you for this awesome video.
The black surface I'm painting on is called Alupanel, it's a sign making material. It's just like a painted metal panel. Stabilo all surface pencils wipe off easily after the paint has dried with a little water, not like a regular pencil. Mineral spirits, we call it "white spirits" here in the UK, your description sounds about right, I got the following description from Wikipedia.org "White spirit (UK) or mineral spirits (US, Canada), also known as mineral turpentine (AU/NZ), turpentine substitute, petroleum spirits, solvent naphtha (petroleum), Varsol, Stoddard solvent, or, generically, "paint thinner", is a petroleum-derived clear liquid used as a common organic solvent in painting." Thank you for the questions and hope you enjoy my other videos.

@@PaintySniffers what I'm saying is your volume levels are all out of wack. Background music is just that, background music. but your background music is louder than you, making it now the main focus. Not to mention I now have to listen etra careful because you decided to use a voice changer for a reason that I'm sure makes no sense for the viewers on-top of the music volume louder than the volume of your vocal tracks. Literally only makes the video harder to get information from, and making it a hell of a lot less enjoyable to watch...

Should my brush set up be different if I’m left handed?
Nope, as long as the brush is held the right way up you should be fine (wooden stick part of the brush to the left).
Let me know if you have any other questions and thank you for watching.
Have fun 👍
Best advice I can give is do a test panel first to see if you have any problems 👍
@@PaintySniffers if i use a hardener as you stated before clearcoating how long should the enamel stay to dry before clearcoating? If its over 24 hours i scuff the enamel with a grey scotch brite pad for the clear to stick?

No problem. Outlining flames is fun, just take your time, let the paint flow and have fun. Let me know how you get on 👍
What is the surface you are working on?
Most of these videos I’m using Dibond or Alupanel, it’s two thin aluminium sheets with a plastic core, it’s light weight, strong and coated both sides.
It’s available at building supplies places or sign materials shops.
Thank you for watching, have fun.
Thank you. Very good info!
You're welcome 👍
Do they make brushes for left handed people like me?
The brush should work exactly the same for left handed people but there are brushes made specifically for left handers. Google "Von Dago southpaw brushes" and you'll find them. Hope this helps and thank you for watching.
So what are your practice sheets
Hi, the panel in this video is Alupanel, it's a sign making material. Most sign supply shops should be able to supply you some.
Any old car panel or painted panel should be good for practicing on, it really doesn't matter that much as long as paint sticks to it, it's smooth and you can hold it still.
I hope this answers your question?
Thank you for watching.
Stay safe, have fun and Merry Christmas 👍
Great help! Im new to this and am woried about storing the brushes without damaging the soft hairs. Any tips would be helpful thanks.
Would nitrocellulose paint works for pinstriping?
Hello, I’ve never tried it so couldn’t really say a definite yes or no.
I wouldn’t even know if it would damage the brushes.
Enamel paint is the most common paint used in pinstriping, urethane paint is sometimes used and I’ve heard some people are now using acrylic paints. You would have to research which brushes are compatible with other paints.
Let me know if you try it and tell me how it goes.
Good luck and have fun 👍
@@PaintySniffers I'll try to mess with it later but would it be better to use cheap synthetic enamel? Or do you have any experience with it?
Cheap enamel is ok to practice and learn with, I wouldn’t use it on anything I was going to sell or a customers vehicle.
Awsome video!
Thank you 👍
How long does it take to fully dry?

What do you use for practice panels & do you use the same one over & over again?
I mostly use off cuts of a sign making material called Alupanel , it’s two thin sheets of aluminium bonded to a light weight plastic core. I do clean and reuse the same panels to save money.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Thank you! Can you make more video
I will be making new videos as soon as i can get back to somewhere I can paint/film in peace (loads of videos planned).

How much would you charge for something like this ?
Painty Sniffers Thanks! I’m heading downstairs to practice again with this advice. I appreciate you taking time to answer my question.
@@jay3361 No problem, let me know how you get on.
@@jay3361 Brilliant, I'm glad I was able to help. Thank you for the update 👍
where can I get that practice panel
It's called Alupanel here, any sign shop should be able to get you some.

Thanks for the video, it is excellent. I'm beginning to learn pinstriping, I'm using a mack No1 brush, is it suitable for total novice

A guy told me to do my final palleting on clean newsprint not in the paint pile .Gives a better prep.
Yeah, I generally pallet away from the paint pile towards a cleaner area of paper, when I'm working on vehicles or bigger panels I will change my pallet a few times as it gets sticky or if I'm running out of clean space.
Many peoples palleting techniques vary, I used to pallet between my fingers on my left hand but apparently that's bad for your health, it's just what you like or get used to doing,

Is that a 1 inch grid you're using?
No, it's just a centre line with a vertical line either side of it about 1.5-2 inches out and a couple of horizontal lines for reference. I don't like a complete grid, too much pencil to clean up after you've done painting. Most of the time I'll just use a single centre line or nothing at all.

Is that it?

The black surface I'm painting on is called Alupanel, it's a sign making material. It's just like a painted metal panel.
Stabilo all surface pencils wipe off easily after the paint has dried with a little water, not like a regular pencil.
Mineral spirits, we call it "white spirits" here in the UK, your description sounds about right, I got the following description from Wikipedia.org
"White spirit (UK) or mineral spirits (US, Canada), also known as mineral turpentine (AU/NZ), turpentine substitute, petroleum spirits, solvent naphtha (petroleum), Varsol, Stoddard solvent, or, generically, "paint thinner", is a petroleum-derived clear liquid used as a common organic solvent in painting."
