    Is Acid Rain a Thing of the Past?
    www.sciencemag.org/news/2012/0...
    "The story of acid rain from the 1970s is preserved in newspaper headlines, textbooks, and, it turns out, the soils of the northeastern United States. Forty years after humans first began tackling the problem, the impact of acid rain still lingers in New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, according to a new study."
    EPA: Acid Rain Program
    www.epa.gov/airmarkets/acid-r...
    "The Acid Rain Program (ARP), established under Title IV of the 1990 Clean Air Act (CAA) Amendments requires major emission reductions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), the primary precursors of acid rain, from the power sector."
    Climate Change, Explained in One Simple Comic
    www.seeker.com/climate-change-...
    "Randall Munroe, creator of the tri-weekly web comic xkcd, has combined the two into an epic timeline of earth's climate. It shows just how radical the recent changes are and puts to bed the trope 'the climate has changed before.'"

      Organize a block party. Inviite your neighbors. Serve lots of Mexican food and top it off with spoiled salad. Make sure eeveryone stuffs themselves until they can't take any more. Send them up to your roof naked and have them stand on their heads. Soon there will be "chocolate" rain.

      alex munoz Even if that were true (and it isn't because really basic stuff is dangerous as well) it's not really relevant? Not sure what you're getting at. In the video he said you neutralize an acid by mixing it with a substance with a LOWER pH which is obviously a mistake since that means you are mixing an acid with an acid.

    The triangular sign displayed on the lead-in graphic is the bio-hazard sign. Acid rain is a chemical hazard, not a biologic one (Yes, the acid in acid rain hurts plants, which are biological, but the acid isn't - it is chemical).

    Back in the late 80's and early 90's, I heard "acid rain" and "ozon layer depletion" almost every day from TV. Recently I wondered why I do not hear them any more. These days all I hear are global warming and plastic pollution in the oceans.

    • @taoist32
      @taoist32 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeong-hun Sin it's whatever the media wants you to see and hear. The media is controlled by corporations that make deals with various government agencies. Most of what they show is unimportant and doesn't directly affect you unless you are in the area the news is talking about. Any environmental issues are biased politically. Acid rain,which I remember as well, slowly disappeared from media when the public became less disturbed about it.

    • @tabularasa0606
      @tabularasa0606 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Laws where put in place to combat them. Removing the need to discuss them at length.
      Climate change and plastic pollution are still being debated by politicians and since they're slow and bureaucratic there are still not enough laws around to combat it.

    • @rjjcms1
      @rjjcms1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I seem to recall there being a lot of concern about acid rain in the news in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster,as well as connected to industrial emissions in the 80s.

    • @Patchuchan
      @Patchuchan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on which country.
      The UK may have been hit hard during the 1970s but the US not so much and Japan was in a boom during that time.
      Plus most of the jobs created recently are low pay service jobs with few benefits and pay much less than the lost factory jobs after factoring in inflation so there really has not been a recovery since 2008.

    • @alucardwhitehair
      @alucardwhitehair 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Patchuchan I don't belekive thats entirely correct. The majority of new jobs today come form medical and S.T.E.M fields. A far cry better than factory work if you ask me, and much better paying at that.

    • @nickdiamond309
      @nickdiamond309 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's why there are so few jobs. The US is losing the lead in most of the STEM field too. We need entry level jobs for kids coming out of school. The US can make factories run much cleaner now than in the 70's and 80's.

    This is pretty good explanation, except that a lot of enforcement was required after the Clean Air Act of 1990 to compel Power Companies to install state of the art controls on coal fired plants to remove SO2 and NOX emissions (and mercury) from their air emissions. These enforcement actions have continued well into this century.

    Acid rain also frees aluminium ions in the soil and transports it to lakes and ponds. This affects the fish by clogging up it's gills.

I suppose that was the NRA running operation fast and furious right, or was it Obamas lapdog Eric Holder? The oceans have a normal pH of 8.2-8.3, not 9, and if anything, it is dropping and going down because of ocean acidification. I have heard reports of the pH being as low as 7.5 from ocean acidification, which is troubling to say the least, and is a long way off from the 9 stated in this video. In fact, why hasn't DNews done that as a topic? Or perhaps they have and I just haven't seen it.

      It's the concentration of H3O+ ions. at a pH of 7 you have a concentration of 1e-7.

    • @JeremyWS
      @JeremyWS 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      tabularasa0606 can you put that in laymen's terms please?

    • @tabularasa0606
      @tabularasa0606 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a watery solution some of the H2O molecules are split into H+ and OH- ions, the H+ binds to another H2O molecule forming H3O+
      In distillated water the concentration of H3O+ and OH- is 1 part in 10 000 000. the 10 log of 10 000 000 is 7 which is the pH of the water.
      In an acid the concentration of H3O+ is higher for example 1 part in 100 000 the 10 log of 100 000 is 5, thus the solution has a pH of 5.
      In an alkaline solution the OH- reduces the concentration of H3O+ so it may be 1 part in 1 000 000 000 which makes the pH 9.

    See Forbes article called "Remember The Acid Rain 'Scare'? Global Warming Hysteria Is Pouring Down"
    "As it turned out, those widespread fears proved to be largely unfounded, since only one species of tree at a high elevation suffered any notable effect, and acidity in lakes was traced to natural causes. The investigating scientists reported that they had 'turned up no smoking gun; that the problem is far more complicated than it been thought; that other factors combine to harm trees; and that sorting out the cause-and-effect was difficult and in some cases impossible.' "

      The point is that its effects have been somewhat mitigated by reducing sulfur emissions. Go look at any diesel pump -- they all have that sticker about low-sulfur diesel being required.
