as usual really enjoyed the video of "swamp angel" 5j1113. have just been sent via email 2 cutaway drawings and an advert for a 1930's era Caterillar D2 3J series from an Australian engineering lecturer friend
As unfortunate as they may be, it is very interesting to see how you diagnose faults, even referring back to your build notes to figure out what might be going on. We watch your thorough methods throughout the build process and it’s also nice to see how you resolve something in a ‘finished’ and running machine. She has always been my favourite and it’s great to hear her chugging along with a better note.
I think I remember you commenting about the paint on that suspect injector when they were tested. I thought then that it looked like it had been a used one. I think it was returned as a new injector with some other unused parts. I had that happen with a lifter for my 89 Escort. I opened the box and the "new" lifter was dirtier than the one I was replacing. When I checked it out, it was so bad that you could push the plunger down and it stayed there. 12 hours later it was only about halfway up to its unloaded position. The bad one in the car was in better shape.
Thanks for the update Toby! The Swamp Angel does sound a lot better. I know my 756 has some diesel sitting on the air intake and a good friend of mine who knows those tractors thinks it’s the return line that has a leak so I’ll be looking into that soon. Hopefully I’ll be able to make the Nowthen show to see the Swamp Angel. Thanks again and can’t wait for the next video
Listing to that D2 run takes me back to my youth. My uncle had one on his farm like the one he used in the army during WW2. He also had a early D8 with the wide tracks on it, sounded like your D6 except with more cylinders.
Glad you got it figured out, bud! Can't wait to see it at the show. I may have to violate our friend contract and sit in the chair.. I'm curious to feel just how crisp all of the levers are.
The difference between 1450 and 1600 psi of injector cracking pressure is not the cause of that cylinder miss from time to time. Is more due to the spray pattern and atomization of the fuel. I recommend you to bring all the 4 injectors to a reputated fuel injection service shop so they can test them in a good BOSCH injector tester for spray pattern and atomization. This is the KEY. Also will be a good idea to disassemble and give them a good ultrasonic cleaner and nozzle polishing to bring it back to specs as much as possible. I suppose new injector nozzles for them are no longer available? Good spray pattern and fuel atomization is the goal more than a defined cracking pressure. And keep running the engine at full load as much as possible and evite running it at no load condition as much as you can.
Hey Squatch, I have a PTO Dynameter I just got done rebuilding the pump this spring and I did some testing at home a month ago one it. I'm not 100% sure if the Nowthen show would allow it or if they have a Dyno already. If your interested maybe we could make some arrangements. I know I'm not busy the Nowthen weekend currently. Maybe the Swamp Angel would like a little run time on a controlled load.
What a difference between before & after. Sounded so much better after the swap. I thought it sounded too good to be anything major in your break in with Sr. Videos, can’t wait to hear it pulling a load now !!! Unfortunately, finding anyone with the tooling let alone someone with the hands on experience to dial in a set of injectors may be past.
If I remember correctly all 4 injectors were NOS? Did you see any sign that the questionable one had been installed before? Working at a dealer, (Chevy), I have seen defective used parts come out of new sealed boxes. Or it may just have a weird defect. It looks like your educated guess solved the problem anyway,
That injector was definitely leaking compared to the others. I noticed the good used injector was barely leaking at all compared to the good N.O.S. It sure seemed to help, good job! I wonder if those old time injectors need to break-in just like an engine does?
Can you describe the process where the “low cracking pressure” would cause a “pop?” Is fuel leaking into the cylinder when it is not supposed to, causing an “out of time” detonation?
I think the spray pattern is not s good under compression, some of the fuel leaks out the top is probably why the spray pattern would be different under compression, Fuel mixture is still burning when the Exhaust valve opens causing a pop. Just my best guess.
I thought you had a plan for the rock crusher in relation to the area you cleaned up and leveled a few years ago. I remember you used the Doodle bug, and there's also a D2 parked there as a monument.@@squatch253
If you know of anyone experienced in precision machining, they may be able to help recondition some of those old injectors. Just a thought that crossed my mind....🤔
I didn't know that about your trailer and if it was capable of hauling both D2s I would have used the iron mistress as a static display and swamp angel as your running example kind of like what you did at the Moline tractor show
Love your vids. I'm not a diesel mechanic, but why not send all your diesel pump and injectors to ADS? @AreaDieselService I love the collaborations they do,makes for very nice content for two channels!
Sounded better right off the bat with the other injector. More even. I like it!
oh sure leave us on a cliff hanger dang !!!!
What a great way to spend a very hot and humid Florida afternoon than staying in the cool air conditioning and catching up on Squatch videos.
How pleasant it is to troubleshoot an engine without the need of a computer!
Always best to shim your injectors to within 50psi for best balance. I am surprised their pop pressure is so low.
So suspenseful!!! Almost like an Alfred Hitchcock movie!!!
Good Morning. I am glad the Swamp Angel finally gets to be out in public. People are going to love it.
That machine will be the Queen of the Ball at that show. It’s nothing short of awesome.
Once again, you diagnose the problem. The solution is often simple. Thus, the meticulous notes prove their worth.
You're mean !! To leave us with so so many questions
Saved yet again by your fastidious and comprehensive record keeping. Of course, that diagnostic ear is working great too. Good work.
I noticed the difference right away! 😮
Oh Squatch 253, how delightfully suspenseful.! To be continued...

I think the patina on that replacement injector matches the swamp angel better as well. Great video!

Very few people can rebuild an engine with "one hand tied behind his back"
Got a good strong sound that engine, real nice!

I absolutely dig the fact that you'll be showing an essentially new machine that still looks older than dirt! A sleeper
That looks like an old single shank subsoiler that’ll put a load on that D2
Recording keeping. The gold standard.
Excellent video the replacement injector made the engine sound a lot better and more crisp
AHHH, Cliff Hanger!!!
Suspense!!!

Sweet so ya found your pop while running faithful number three of the original injectors.

Immediately sounded more even running and smooth with that injector swapped out, I think you're onto it Toby
I think someone is going to go and rip some roots. Very good to see 5J1113 getting some action.
It sure sounds good 👍.

Maybe the spray pattern is different when under compression.
Preppy!
😊good morning everyone 😊😊 it sounds a lot better now 😊

I saw the Minnesota state bird flying around.
Great video Squatch! Looking forward to the next one as always. Cheers
Another great episode 👌 unfortunately with my impaired hearing i didn't notice any difference but put her under load an I'll hear it 🤔😂😂
Could be confirmation bias, but the engine sounds better even at idle with the new injector.
Toby, I’m surprised you didn’t put that number 3 injector in the number 3 hole. Now you’re making my eye twitch.
What a difference between before & after.

Nice job
it may never worry you but when ever I shut down a D2 I have been told to always disengage the clutch so it won't get suck over time.
That was not a test drive that was a tease!!!!
Hopefully you found the pop problem. I think you found my pop problem as well 😊
Well I will look forward to seeing the angel
If you have a heat gun when you swapped injectors the bad injector exhaust port would be cooler and should follow the bad injector .

Will Area Diesel Service be able to rebuild that leaky bad injector??? They have done miracles for so many other ‘channels’ equipment needs
I never heard the pop but SWMBO says I'm about half deaf, I could hear it was running better after the swap, fingers crossed.

Swamp angel sounds really good! One question I do have about the D2’s the wide tracks that’s on swamp angel was that an option from the factory?
@@squatch253 thanks for the info did not know that
Nice to get that issue sorted out! You going to Pioneer power show? Great videos!
20+ acres to plow at fall plow day. 2 day affair. Plenty of time to get some hours on it!
@@squatch253 it may never be done in his lifetime.
You might just have the popping cured!!
Have you looked into injector overhaul tools and set up
Wait, What? To be continued - nooo!

Better get that baby broke in before she gets glazed up. 🙂
Heres me, Now what did i do with that no 3 original injector.
Awe!
When are you planning to start building the rock crusher? Will it be a winter project?
I thought you had a plan for the rock crusher in relation to the area you cleaned up and leveled a few years ago. I remember you used the Doodle bug, and there's also a D2 parked there as a monument.@@squatch253
Has the popping noise now been sorted fully?....
If you know of anyone experienced in precision machining, they may be able to help recondition some of those old injectors. Just a thought that crossed my mind....🤔
I wonder about Area Diesel Service. They have been helping a lot of other youtuber's lately
👍🏼🇦🇺✋🏼
Put a blade back on it they look cool
Do you engage the clutch when park it if so why
@@squatch253 You look much more fit now than then.
Could you take the iron mistress and swamp angel to the show together or Is it not possible
